ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

Powerful images have been released of the Greek air force plucking passengers off a burning ferry adrift in the Adriatic Sea, battling darkness and bad weather that hampered rescue efforts by other ships throughout Sunday (December 28).

Helicopters airlifted passengers off the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic and transferred them to a nearby vessel, after a dramatic day that began when a fire broke out on its lower deck in the early hours of Sunday.

Authorities said one Greek man had died and there were reports of four injured among 478 passengers and crew as night fell.

Greece's cost guard said 221 people were clear of the danger zone, with 256 still on board. A Greek Defence Ministry official said at least seven passengers had been airlifted from the ship by the Greek air force on Sunday.

The Greek Shipping Ministry said a team of doctors was on board to offer help to those still waiting to be airlifted.
