Thousands join peaceful Bahrain anti-government protest

Thousands of anti-government protesters held a peaceful rally on Friday (December 26) on Budaiya Highway, which links the capital Manama to the northwestern town of Budaiya, calling for democracy, political reform and the release of political prisoners.

Vast crowds of men, women and children marched and chanted anti-government slogans along the highway, while carrying Bahraini flags and holding pictures of jailed activists.

Among the protesters was the prominent rights activist Nabeel Rajab and Bahrain's main opposition group Al Wefaq General Secretary Ali Salman.

Rajab, one of the most high-profile pro-democracy campaigners in the Arab world and founder of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, was freed in May after two years in jail on charges of organising and participating in illegal protests.
