STORY: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden visited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Sunday (November 23), the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians.

Biden was on a two-day visit to Istanbul, where he met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and held talks on the fight against the Islamic State.

Turkey has been a reluctant partner in the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS) insurgents. Ankara argues that the coalition's air strikes in Iraq and Syria are not enough and it has pushed for a more comprehensive strategy involving Syrian Presaident Bashar al-Assad's departure and the creation of a buffer zone inside Syria to protect displaced civilians.
