First referendum results declared in Scottish referendum

STORY: The first results to come out of the Scottish independence referendum on Friday (September 19) were for the 'No' camp and was returned by the tiny Clackmannanshire region at around 0030gmt (0130 local time).

Chief returning officer Marie Pitcaithly made the announcement soon after in Edinburgh saying the 'No' votes stood at 54 percent against 46 percent for the 'Yes'.

Supporters of the 'Stay Together' campaign cheered at the news. They were to be given another bit of good news one hour later when the Orkney islands, where residents were widely expected to reject the bid for independence, returned a 'No' vote too.

Turnout for the independence referendum has been high at around 80 percent.

Scotland was to continue the night agonizing over the fate of their country though results were coming fast.
