Local politicians, dignitaries and victims' relatives gathered in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday to remember the 40 passengers and crew who died when hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania during the September 11 attacks.

In what has become an annual ritual, relatives read out the names of the victims at the ceremony.

Readers would occasionally pause, their voices often cracking with grief, as a silver bell was rung to mark the moment each of the four planes hijacked by Islamist militants crashed.

This year, a Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to those who died at the site of the memorial.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in al Qaeda's attack on the United States 13 years ago.
