Pistorius lawyer gives closing arguments in murder trial

Oscar Pistorius’ defence team has been presenting its closing arguments in the athlete’s murder trial.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel has spent the trial, which began in March, depicting the double amputee as a gun-obsessed hothead who deliberately shot his 29-year-old girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius’ lawyer Barry Roux has been trying to prove the police twisted evidence while the prosecution distorted facts.

“You’re vulnerable, you’re anxious. You’re trained as an athlete to react,” Roux said, adding that Pistorious had felt exposed because he was standing on the stumps of his legs.

Pistorius is accused of killing his Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, at his home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day last year.

The defence claims he should be convicted of the potentially lesser charge of culpable homicide, which could carry a 15 year sentence.

He faces at least 25 years in jail if found guilty of murder.

The judge is expected to deliver a verdict between one and four weeks.
