Killings continue unabated as C. African Republic marks a year since coup

Few signs of peace as gunfire rings through the streets of the capitol in Central African Republic.

At least nine people are killed as the country marks the launch of a coup a year ago.

(SOUNDBITE)(French) OCTAVIEN MOMOKAMA, SAYING:

"I ask the people who are trying to destroy their own country, be it the Seleka or the anti-Balaka, to stop their atrocities. They are still here in the country killing people, committing massacres and stealing, they should stop."

France has deployed 2,000 troops to its former colony to support a 6,000-strong African Union peacekeeping mission. But they have been unable to stamp out the violence in the large, sparsely populated nation of 4.5 million people.
