South America commemorates Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, on the one year anniversary of his death.

In Argentina, a mass was held to remember the socialist strongman, who led Venezuela for 14 years.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez greeted a crowd of Chavez supporters at an al fresco mass on Ash Wednesday.

She hailed Chavez's efforts to fight poverty and unite leftist countries in the region.

"One can see at the Montana barracks that it's very nice. Where is he (Chavez), around the popular barrios, it's his people, the poor are looking after him. Up there they are looking after the armed forces and everyone else, Hugo Chavez, Nestor (Kirchner) and those others who look after the people."

And with a song and a dance they celebrated his life.

It was a more sombre occasion in Cuba.
