Woman shot during protests in Western Ukraine

A woman was shot and apparently seriously wounded during a protest on Wednesday in the city of Khmelnitsky in Western Ukraine.

A local TV channel, TV7 Plus, showed video of a small crowd of protesters gathered outside the local office of the National Security Service. When some protesters started to smash glass doors of the building, there was a sound of automatic gunfire.

The crowd screamed as one woman remained prone on the pavement with what appears to be gunshot wounds to the head. The woman was later taken by an ambulance to the hospital and her condition was not immediately known.

Violence spread from the capital Kiev to several Western Ukrainian cities, most notably Lviv and Ternopil.

In Kiev, 26 people were killed in fighting, of whom 10 were police officers, the Health Ministry said. A ministry official said 263 protesters and 342 police officers were being treated for inju
