In his yearly televised New Year's address, Russian President Vladimir Putin offers choice words to those responsible for two suicide attacks that killed 34 people ahead of the Winter Olympics.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

"Dear friends, we bow our heads before the victims of cruel terrorist acts. I am certain that we will fiercely and consistently continue the fight against terrorists until their complete annihilation."

It was his first public statement since the attacks were carried out in the city of Volgograd at a busy train station and on a trolleybus.

They both happened within 24-hours.

Police are detaining dozens in massive security sweeps across the city.

Russia has just over one month to prepare for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games.

Russia's Olympic Committee chief said no more could be done to safeguard the Games since every measure possible was already in place around Sochi.
