Students clash with police in Chile

The pen may be mightier than the sword but on Thursday some Chilean students put down their pens and picked up rocks to hurl at police.

The campaign for educational reform in Chile is in its second year and thousands of students attended the latest demonstration demanding a revamp of the education system.

Tuition costs here are among the highest in the world and many are demanding free schooling for all.

The march was peaceful but as the day went on small groups of students attacked police who responded with water canon... and teargas.

Chile is the world's largest copper producer but income inequality is high and critics claim President Sebastian Pinera has failed to redistribute wealth from the copper boom.

The unpopular Pinera will face the people in presidential elections next year.
