The Beijing-Shanghai express train line officially launched on Thursday. This service will cut a previously 11-hour journey into a five hour one.

At 3pm Beijing time, two trains, G1 and G2 simultaneously took off from both cities. The high-speed train travels along an elevated track upwards to 300 kilometers, or 185 miles an hour. It's expected to serve 80 million passengers a year, although there is some doubt whether the service will make back its cost.

So far the expensive railway project has cost 34 billion US dollars to build, and is expected to expand to a whole network by 2015, costing a total of 342 billion US dollars.
