Ireland: Turf Wars | European Journal
A European Union ban on turf cutting in Ireland has caused outrage among farmers there. Cutting is now banned at 55 bogs, for conservation reasons. But many farmers are ignoring the ruling - turf is a valuable commodity in Ireland as it's used widely for heating homes. The decree from Brussels has annoyed many members of the public because, in exchange for a bailout, Ireland had to sign up to painful costcutting measures. Irish farmers don't see why they should now give up the centuries-old tradition of turf cutting as well. The media are calling it the turf war . But turf cutting does have its opponents in Ireland too, because of concerns about the environmental damage it causes.
