8 April 2011 A huge upset today at Margaret River at the Telstra Drug Aware Pro with 21 year old emerging Kiwi surfing star Billy Stairmand defeating 10 times world champion Kelly Slater.

Stairmand set the win up mid heat when he took off on one of the bigger waves of the day, belted two extremely committed backhand critical top-to-bottom turns and posted an outstanding 9 point ride.

Slater tried to take the heat late with an excellent 8 point ride but was unable to overtake Stairmand.

Stairmand moved through to the final 12 surfers in the event while Slater was eliminated.

Australia's Mick Fanning was also extremely impressive today defeating another emerging NZ surfer in Richard Christie to also move through to the final 12 surfers.
