Devastating Flooding Kills Nine in India

Wreaking havoc in the hilly terrain, a cloudburst in India's northern Uttarakhand State brought life to a virtual standstill on Sunday.

Massive flooding, especially in the residential areas of Haldwani, made getting out and about hazardous.

Roads were completely swept away, while slushy mud and debris entered several houses.

Standing crops were completely destroyed right before harvest.

Meanwhile in the Almora district, the heavy rains claimed at least nine lives and damaged dozens of buildings.

The torrential rains and subsequent landslides have washed away many structures along the mountain streams.

Army and paramilitary police are carrying out relief and rescue operations.
