Jharkhand India Maoist Threat Affects Villagers Business

Villagers in India’s eastern Jharkhand state are forced to trek long distances to trade products, after Maoist rebels forcefully banned the entry of traders into the village.

Twelve villages have been suffering due to this restriction imposed by the rebels for more than a month now.

[Vinod Prasad, Villager]: (male, Hindi)
“Villagers here do not get vegetables they need; they have to cover long distances to buy things. We are facing a lot of difficulties.”

Villagers looking for customers can be seen sitting outside their huts with their products, which include produce and handicraft items.

Village traders say their business has been badly hit by the move.

[Muhammad Bashir, Villager]: (male, Hindi)
“There are restrictions on people selling their products; they will have to come to the market to sell it. (Q. Are there enough traders?) No, there are not. Hardly any buyers."

Maoist rebels operate in large parts of the eastern, central and southern countryside. Officials say they are now spreading to cities and bigger towns.
