Eastern India: Maoist Shutdown Affects Train Services

In India, Maoist rebels have called for a 48-hour shutdown in three eastern states. Many trains in the region have been halted as result.
Maoists have called for a 48-hour shutdown in the states of West Bengal, Orissa and Jharkhand. They are demanding six of their detained leaders be presented before a court.
On Monday, railway authorities either cancelled or diverted several trains and beefed up security in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand state after Maoists gave the shutdown call.
Railway protection force personnel and state police officials have been deployed at key stations due to the shutdown.

“In view of the security threat, some trains have been cancelled, including the Palamau Express and the Ranchi Garibrath train, and some goods trains have been cancelled, and some have been diverted.”
Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency, which began in the late 1960s.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh say the Maoists remain the country's biggest internal security threat.
