An early look at Royal Caribbean's second Icon-class ship, which doesn't claim, to be but likely is, the world's largest cruise ship.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, cruisers. I am Dan Klein, Editor-in-Chief of Travel Host.
00:03Next to me is Dennis Post, co-owner of Postcard Travel Planning.
00:07We are going to talk about the biggest, the greatest, not technically the largest,
00:12cruise ship in the world, Star of the Seas.
00:15Why not the largest?
00:16Because I feel like all the cruise lines have gotten together
00:19and decided they're not going to make that claim anymore.
00:21If you notice at Celebration Key, Carnival is not saying that's the largest pool.
00:26They're calling it a lagoon, so they're not stepping on Royal Caribbean's claim.
00:31So I think as an industry, there might be some agreements about kind of ending that.
00:35But Star of the Seas, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, is a copy,
00:40an exact copy of Icon.
00:41It has a little bit different art.
00:43Everything else is pretty much the same.
00:46Now that's again, that's like saying,
00:48hey, that clone of Michael Jordan's pretty good at basketball.
00:51Ooh, but he might have a gambling problem.
00:53What's the gambling problem on Star of the Seas?
00:56Because it's the same problem we had at Icon.
00:58The adult pool is a disaster.
01:00It is called Hideaway.
01:01You have to walk down a flight of stairs to get there,
01:04something Amy Post right now, I heard Nune, could not do.
01:07And when you get there, there's very few places to put your stuff.
01:11I know something I complain about all the time,
01:13but there's no cubbies, there's few chairs.
01:15A lot of the chairs are in the direct sun,
01:16so you don't want to put your phone there.
01:18And it's a beautiful infinity pool,
01:20that when I was there with six people,
01:22and there were only 500 on board, was great.
01:24I can't imagine what it's like with 6,000 people on board.
01:28A minor flaw they fixed a little bit in now that the Swim & Tonic bar,
01:33which is a swim-up bar, is now adults only,
01:35but those bars are not that close to each other.
01:38So this is a family cruise ship.
01:40Water slides.
01:42Things to do everywhere.
01:44Rooms are spectacular.
01:45There's USB ports everywhere.
01:47They have not spared a detail.
01:49And I think one of the things is when you see the top cruise ships,
01:52and we were lucky enough, we were on MSC World America,
01:55I was on Norwegian Aqua.
01:56We're on Carnival Celebration right now.
01:58We've seen some of the greatest cruise ships in the world,
02:01and I think it's fair to say that Jason Liberty, Michael Bailey,
02:05Jay Schneider, the team owner at Royal,
02:08they know how to design a cruise ship.
02:09There is flow everywhere.
02:11It really, really works.
02:13You could be on floor and end up in Central Park,
02:15and you don't feel like you've walked it.
02:17So we're going to talk more about that ship.
02:19We're going to talk more about the ship we're on,
02:21Celebration, as we sort of go through our week here.
02:24Until then, I am Dan Klein.
02:26He is Dennis Post.
02:27Come cruise with us soon.
