00:00The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has busted a smuggling syndicate allegedly run

00:05by senior Malaysian Armed Forces officers in the south. A source said five senior officers

00:10and five civilians, including an Indonesian national, were arrested around the Klang Valley

00:15from 6.30 a.m. in an operation by MACC's Intelligence Division and the Anti-Corruption

00:20Tactical Squad. The source added that the senior officers were from the Armed Forces Intelligence

00:25Division including two former personnel and were tasked with curbing smuggling but are

00:30believed to have colluded with the syndicate for five years, receiving over 3 million ringgit in bribes.

00:35Initial investigations found they allegedly leaked military operational information and facilitated

00:40the smuggling of drugs, cigarettes and other banned goods worth about 5 million ringgit a month.

00:46The source said the suspects were believed to have received 30,000 ringgit to 50,000 ringgit per

00:51smuggling trip and more than 62,000 ringgit in cash, drugs, liquor, imitation firearms and weighing

00:57equipment were seized. An Indonesian woman without valid travel documents, believed to be the mistress

01:02of one officer, was also detained and MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner Ahmad Husay Riachia confirmed the

01:08arrests under Section 16A of the MACC Act 2009. He added that the suspects will be brought to the

01:15Putrajaya Magistrate's Court tomorrow for a remand application.
