00:00As far as expectations goes, look, I mean, the schedule is brutal.
00:06The schedule is a really tough schedule, and this team upgraded a quarterback.
00:10But look, that was a low bar to clear.
00:11I mean, they were a disaster at quarterback last year with Daniel Jones.
00:15Obviously, that went terribly, and now he's gone.
00:17But anyone would have been an upgrade.
00:20This year is all about the future and Jackson Dart and what they can build with guys like
00:25Abdul Carter, Jackson Dart, Malik Nabors.
00:27I mean, these guys are the foundational players for a team that will not be a contender this
00:31year, but perhaps if they wind up hitting on Jackson Dart, could be next year or the year
00:36after.
00:37I mean, look at what Washington did with Jaden Daniels.
00:41Obviously, he had an enormously impressive rookie year.
00:43I don't see Jackson Dart having that type of year, having those type of opportunities.
00:49But this is a year to kind of set the stage for a franchise that's trying to get back to
00:54where it once was.
00:55And not in a long time.
00:58I mean, it's been a decade plus of misery for the Giants, obviously.
01:02I get that schedule is tough, but five and a half, five and a half.
01:06My boy Brady, we're talking about it.
01:07That's six wins.
01:08And I'm like, I get it.
01:10But, you know, divisional games, Dallas, Washington, maybe they take a step back.
01:14I got to tell you, Daryl, like, I'm looking at the Giants at five and a half going, can't
01:18we just get six?
01:19I think we can.
01:20Like, I actually, I'm not going to say winning the division, but six wins.
01:24And I know the games, you look at the schedule and go, God, that's a murderer's role.
01:27Like, I was looking at that going, oh, my God, please bring on the Saints.
01:31But six, can we get there?
01:33I think we can.
01:34Yeah, I think they can win six games.
01:39They're not going to win eight or nine games.
01:41If they win seven games, it would be an enormous accomplishment.
01:46Certainly, I think that it would surprise nobody if they won four or fewer.
01:52But six, you know, they play the Bears.
01:56They play the Raiders.
01:57Those are road games, though, you got to remember.
01:59They play the Patriots, another road game.
02:01So a lot of their, quote, unquote, easier games are on the road.
02:06And so that has to be kind of taken into account.
02:08But their home schedule is really nasty, and they don't get the buys you see there until
02:13week 14.
02:16And then, yeah, New Orleans, again, on the road.
02:19So that is a really, really challenging schedule, particularly at home.
02:25And they could get to six, yeah.
02:29I think at some point, they're going to have to.
02:31It depends on what they get out of Russell Wilson, right?
02:33I mean, we know he's not a star anymore.
02:36But they could get functional play out of him.
02:39And they have a great receiver in Malik Nabors, and maybe they win with defense.
02:42I think that's the hope.
02:43What about Brian Dayball's future, Daryl?
02:47You know, there's a lot of talk that he's on the hot seat.
02:51But, you know, I think if ownership is realistic, and it's kind of what you're alluding to here,
02:56we don't expect him to win nine games.
02:58But if he wins six or seven, I got to believe, I hope he keeps his job.
03:04Oh, absolutely.
03:05I think, look, coming off four wins, or three and 14 last year, coming off six wins a year prior,
03:13I think he keeps his job with seven wins, no doubt.
03:15Six wins, probably.
03:17If you're talking four or five wins, I think then it becomes, you know, how does Jackson Dart perform?
03:22Because if they win that, if they're that bad, then they're going to pull Russell Wilson and put Jackson Dart in.
03:27There's a world in which they could win five games, and he keeps his job if Jackson Dart performs well enough
03:32to give this ownership duo and John Mara and Steve Tisch hope that this coaching staff can stick with this,
03:40can build something with this kid.
03:43But, yeah, certainly, I think six or seven games, he keeps his job.
03:46That's not going to be an easy task.
03:49I've got to ask you, Daryl, like the running back situation is a very interesting one.
03:54And you sit there, and Cam Scadabo at Arizona State, I love this kid.
03:59Like, he was absolutely amazing.
04:00You know, he's questionable right now.
04:02But how do you think this is going to play out?
04:04Running back by committee, I know fantasy owners and stuff, like who's going to be the guy for the Giants?
04:09But right now, it looks like you guys have multiple options.
04:11But how do you think the running back situation is going to play out for the G-Men?
04:18It depends a lot on Cam Scadabo.
04:20It really does.
04:22We don't know the severity or nature of this injury right now.
04:25That is a big issue.
04:27Tyrone, Devin Singletary, we know what he is.
04:30He's not a great back at this point in his career.
04:35Tyrone Tracy, fifth-round rookie last year, did a really nice job.
04:38But is he a true number one back?
04:41I mean, the Giants have decided they don't necessarily want a guy like that.
04:44That's why they let Saquon Barkley go.
04:46But if they can get a nice tandem there out of Scadabo and Tracy, maybe they can get something out of their running game.
04:54Keep teams honest.
04:56Back off, you know, make teams play closer to the line and open things up for Malik neighbors.
05:00Darryl, the one real bright spot for this team, and I think they had a good draft, which included the aforementioned Cam Scadabo.
05:09But this defensive front, the front seven, really, it's one of the best units in the league.
05:15Yeah.
05:15But my question is, how far can that take them?
05:17I mean, obviously, it's going to have to play a big role if this team is going to get to six or seven wins.
05:23What are the impressions?
05:24How have they looked in camp so far, the defensive front?
05:28Great.
05:28I mean, albeit against a line that is not great, an offensive line.
05:32So that's part of it.
05:34They have to be able to stop the run a lot better than they did last year.
05:38Those guys admit that.
05:39Dexter Lawrence said, look, if we don't stop the run, it doesn't matter how good we are as a pass rush unit.
05:43So that is part of the rub here for this defense.
05:47They rushed the passer pretty well last year.
05:49I mean, but the guys they have up front now with the addition of Abdul Carter,
05:53who has looked fantastic, really, that's the clear strength of the team.
05:59And I think they could carry this defense.
06:03Now, will that be enough to carry them to wins overall?
06:05We'll see.
06:06He is Daryl Slater.
06:08You can find him at NJ.com.
06:10He writes for the Star Ledger in New Jersey.
06:12He covers the New York Giants.
06:14We'll have him for another segment.
06:15Find out his thoughts more about this team's future in 2025 when we return right here on In Game Live Game.
06:23Continuing here on In Game Live Game Day on Sports Grid with Daryl Slater.
06:28He is a reporter for the New York Giants.
06:30You can find him on Twitter at Daryl Slater.
06:33That is D-A-R-R-Y-L-S-L-A-T-E-R.
06:37And Daryl, thank you again so much for sticking around and lending some insight onto this team.
06:42And expectations are very low.
06:44The win total, as we have discussed, is five and a half.
06:46The number to win the division is 25 to one.
06:49And you talk about the conference and the Super Bowl.
06:51It's even more ridiculous than that.
06:54So, you know, what are some good bets that we can make on this team?
06:57You brought up Abdul Carter.
06:59And you brought up how good he has looked in camp.
07:01Now, again, he's competing against an offensive line that is not necessarily a strong point for this New York Giants team.
07:07But maybe a defensive rookie of the year, something like that.
07:11Where do you see some, maybe some markets where we might be able to bet on success for the New York Giants?
07:17Well, I think he will be one of the favorites for defensive rookie of the year, if not the top favorite.
07:24Another one, I think Malik Nabors catches.
07:27I mean, I don't know what they're going to set the number at, but it is going to be high.
07:32They are going to make him a huge part of their offense, if only because they don't have another true weapon.
07:39And that's going to be a big part of what they do.
07:41If they have any success, they're going to have to throw him the ball a ton.
07:44And so those would be one on offense, one on defense there.
07:49You know, I would kind of maybe steer clear of Jackson Dart type numbers in terms of betting, because we just don't know.
07:56I mean, this is, remember, a hot seat regime that if they can win some games with Russell Wilson, they're going to be content to not play Jackson Dart.
08:04So they're going to have to lose or obviously Russell Wilson get hurt for Jackson Dart to get out there.
08:09So that's a bit of a wild card for how much he's going to play.
08:11Daryl, I got to ask you, too, everyone's talking about neighbors and he'll be a big fantasy guy.
08:18But neighbors, there's got to be somebody else who would be your sleeper pick for people in these drafts to say, you know what?
08:24This guy actually might be a bit of a nice late round selection for the Giants.
08:28Neighbors gets all the headlines, but somebody else has to catch balls, too.
08:31Sure.
08:32I think obviously Darius Slayton was their number two receiver last year.
08:35We kind of know what he is at this point.
08:37He's a solid but not spectacular player.
08:39The guy that watches Jalen Hyatt through two years has been a pretty big disappointment.
08:43They traded up to get him in the third round two years ago, has not really done anything.
08:48He's a nice deep threat, and he's sort of rounded out his game a little bit, gotten better at running other routes.
08:53He's bulked up.
08:54He was a super skinny kid.
08:56If he can translate that into success on the field and more opportunities, he could be a guy who could pop a little bit.
09:03He's not ever going to be their number one option, but he could work his way into a number two type role.
09:08So he would be a guy who definitely would qualify as a sleeper, considering how little he's done through two years.
09:15Daryl, if you look at that week one matchup with the Washington Commanders, it's an interesting game.
09:23It's obviously starting the season with a division game, and you're on the road at Washington.
09:29They're getting six and a half points.
09:31Who knows?
09:31Maybe by the time week one rolls around, it's up to a full touchdown of seven points.
09:37But the New York Giants, back in the Daniel Jones regime, that was one team he had a great deal of success against, the Washington Commanders.
09:45And you wonder, that's probably going to carry over somewhat.
09:48You know, Dayball was there for a few of those good games and what have you.
09:52I mean, would that be a situation where you're looking to take the points in week one against Washington?
09:59Yeah, sure, I think so.
10:00I think if the number is high enough, like seven, I think that that could certainly warrant that.
10:05I don't think they're going to go down and win that game.
10:07I think they could contend.
10:09But, you know, Jaden Daniels had a great rookie year.
10:12But we got to remember, you know, like this is a very strong defensive front that's going to wreak havoc on more experienced quarterbacks.
10:18And so, we know he's an ascending player.
10:22He has not yet arrived.
10:24I think maybe they can perhaps rattle him a little bit.
10:28Maybe that's a bit of, like, wishful thinking, just looking at it from that perspective.
10:32But seven's a pretty big number.
10:34If it gets to that point, I don't necessarily know that Washington covers that.
10:40We'll see how things kind of round out here a little bit.
10:43But it looks like the Giants could have a pretty strong defensive front that could cause problems, like I said, for more experienced quarterbacks, let alone a guy who has only been in this a year.
10:53Brady's a smart guy.
10:54And he was talking about Washington maybe regressing a little bit.
10:57I think the Eagles asking them to win 12 games.
11:00I know they're the Super Bowl champs.
11:01Anything can happen.
11:02This division, too, it's hard to repeat.
11:05So, I guess looking at this division, is there, like, one bet?
11:08Like, Washington, are they going to regress?
11:10The Eagles?
11:10That's why I like the Giants, because I think these other teams at the top, I don't like their wins totals.
11:14But, like, what would be your favorite bet out of those?
11:16Like, do you think the Eagles are going to run away with this thing?
11:18I'm not so sure they're going to get the 12 wins.
11:20What do you think about them, Washington, and the Cowboys, the other teams in the division?
11:24I think the Eagles will probably win the division.
11:2612 might be a bit of a stretch.
11:29Like you said, perhaps due for a regression there.
11:32But the Cowboys, so much depends on Micah Parsons, right?
11:36I mean, they could be very vulnerable.
11:39I mean, and that, you know, Giants obviously play them twice.
11:41That could factor into, hey, the Giants maybe steal one of those games, and you get to that six, and they clear the five-and-a-half numbers.
11:48So, that is something to watch, obviously.
11:52Like, what are they going to get out of Micah?
11:53Like, how happy is Micah Parsons even going to be when he gets out there and plays?
11:57You know, even if he does play the whole year, is this guy going to be discontent the entire season?
12:01So, that could be a huge, huge problem for Dallas, quite obviously.
12:04Yeah, you know, it almost seems like Dallas is the pick to make by default.
12:10You know, this team, nobody's repeated as a division champ, you know, since 2004.
12:17I do, I mean, Washington ascended so high last year, you can't believe they're going to maintain that level of success.
12:24They've got to come down a little bit.
12:26The Giants, we don't think we can get all the way home with them.
12:29Dallas, you know, at better than 5-1, has got to be your division champ bet.
12:34We'll let you get out of here, Daryl.
12:35I know you've got a family that's asleep, and they've forced you down into the basement down there while you're making noise and everything like that.
12:43Let's hear your prediction.
12:44How many wins do the New York Giants get in 2025?
12:49I think they'll come up with five wins, just short of the five-and-a-half number.
12:54You know, they could beat Chicago, they could beat Vegas on the road, they could beat the Patriots.
12:59But that, like, again, that home schedule is so, so tough.
13:02And even some of those road games that look winnable, like New Orleans, sure, they could win that game, but, you know, it's not a gimme.
13:11Chicago, another one that's not necessarily a gimme.
13:13So I'll give them 5-12, and that's right in the line for whether Brian Dable keeps the job.
13:19A lot depends on how Jackson Dart performs when he does get in there.
13:24Well, that's a good answer because, you know, if Dable is right there on the fence, that's a good, you know, that's a lot of engagement and keeps you busy working there for NJ.com.
13:33And the star ledger, you'll have a lot to write about if they finish at 5-12.
13:37Thank you so much.
13:38That is Daryl Slater.
13:40Find him on Twitter, at Daryl Slater.
13:42As we continue here on in-game live game day on Sports Grid.
13:46All right.
