00:00It's all entertainment network.
00:07During the next 30 minutes, intuition could win our players $13,000 in cash because...
00:17It's time to challenge everybody's knowledge.
00:20It's time to play the percentages.
00:23And here's our host, Jeff Edwards.
00:35Thank you very much.
00:36Welcome to Play the Percentages.
00:37And Jay Stewart's right.
00:39During this program, someone here can win at least $13,000.
00:42And all of you out there are going to be challenged by what's going to happen right here.
00:45Tell you what let's do.
00:46Let's meet the two married couples who will be opposing each other.
00:48Jay Stewart, would you do that, please?
00:49Our current champions, whose winnings total $3,100 in cash,
00:54she'd like to be a police officer, and her name is Vicki.
00:57He's a salesman, and his name is Dennis.
01:01And the married name they share is Williams.
01:05And their opponents, she's a teacher, and her name is Gail.
01:09He believes in ESP, and his name is John.
01:13And the married name they share is Burns.
01:15Well, Williams, how you doing?
01:23Just fine, and how are you?
01:25I'm just swell, just neat-o.
01:27You don't have any score there, Vicki.
01:29I know.
01:29Isn't that terrible?
01:30I know.
01:30It's distressing.
01:32We practiced, though.
01:33Did you practice over the time we've been off?
01:35Yes, yes.
01:35Uh-huh.
01:36Well, how did you practice?
01:37I just read three dictionaries, was I?
01:38Yes.
01:40Well, that must have been interesting for you.
01:42Listen, you're our challengers.
01:43You don't have any points yet, of course, we're just in the middle of a game where we
01:46left it, and we'll explain a little more of that in a moment.
01:48But you have $3,100 and doing pretty good so far, okay?
01:51All right, let me say hello to the challengers over here.
01:54Gail and John, how are you doing?
01:55Hello, fine.
01:55Good.
01:56Gail, you're a teacher, right?
01:59Yes.
01:59And you were, as I remember, you taught psychiatrically disturbed children?
02:02No, I'm physically handicapped.
02:04Physically handicapped.
02:05Right.
02:05I'm working with them in a special federal project, spending the government's money, taxes.
02:09Yeah, well, we might as well spend the day, and they're not doing any good with it.
02:12That's right, that's right.
02:13And John, you believe in ESP, right?
02:14I bet.
02:15I think that it's doing pretty good for you.
02:17So far, it looks like it's going all right.
02:18Yeah, you guys have a nice lead.
02:20The only thing he ever won so far is the diaper pail, though, so.
02:23I think what?
02:24The only thing he won with his ESP was the diaper pail.
02:26The diaper pail.
02:27Yeah, well, you're probably thinking in the wrong terms.
02:30These two married couples are going to play against each other, the wife against the wife,
02:35and the husband against the husband.
02:38We've asked hundreds of people questions.
02:39It's up to our players now to estimate what percentage of the people got the questions right,
02:43and the game goes on from there.
02:44The first team to reach 300 points gets $300 and gets to play the bonus game, which, as
02:49you guys know, is worth $2,500.
02:52Now, in the last show, we ran out of time, so we're going to resume the game, and let's
02:55check the score of Burns as the challenger is 153, Williams the champions, nothing yet.
03:01It's the men's turn, so, John, you'll be going against Dennis, and Dennis, you've got
03:05your work cut out for you, champ.
03:07Here we are.
03:07Here's the question.
03:10Janet Guthrie was the first woman to do this in broad daylight, and she did it on decoration
03:16day.
03:17What percentage of the people that we asked knew what Janet did?
03:22Remember, a player cannot change a number now once it's been registered, once they've
03:25popped it in there, it is locked in, and it is said good.
03:29So, who knows what Janet Guthrie did?
03:30What percentage, John, do you think knew what Janet Guthrie did?
03:33I picked 21%, because I think it's pretty obscure.
03:36You think it was pretty obscure what you did?
03:37Okay, 21%.
03:38So, John, what do you say, Dennis?
03:40Well, I go along with that obscurity thing, but, again, I'm kind of obscure at times, so
03:43I figured more people might know it than myself, so I said 37.
03:4737%.
03:47Now, the player closer to the true percentage wins those points.
03:51If you hit it right in the nose, you win the game.
03:54Also, you win our growing jackpot, which today stands at $13,000.
03:59So, anybody hits it on the nose, they're going to get themselves $13,000.
04:02Let's see how we stand.
04:03You said 21%.
04:04You said 37%.
04:06How many people knew what Janet Guthrie did on decoration day?
04:09Thirty-nine percent.
04:11Oh, you're the closer you could.
04:15You now have 39 points.
04:18Once again, you're only two points away from breaking our jackpot of $13,000.
04:24You came close again.
04:25You guys are just fooling around with that $13,000.
04:28But, Dennis, you've earned yourself 39 points.
04:30Now, if 39% of the people got it right, that means that 61% of the people did not know the answer.
04:36You can get those 61 points by correctly answering it yourself.
04:39Or, if you want, you can challenge John over there.
04:42What do you think?
04:43Do you think he knows it?
04:44Do you want to take it yourself?
04:45If he does, it's the last question we get.
04:47But I'm a gambler.
04:48You're a gambler.
04:49You got it.
04:50Okay.
04:50You're going to challenge him?
04:51I challenge.
04:52John, for 61 points, you're challenged.
04:55What did Janet Guthrie do on decoration day?
04:57She drove in the Indy 500.
04:59She's a racetrack driver.
04:59Absolutely right.
05:00You got it.
05:01You're now at a total of 214 points.
05:09I think you knew that.
05:10I thought he was going to say Lady Godiva.
05:12You took a chance.
05:13And the challenge didn't work out for you.
05:16But you're not out of business.
05:17Not out of business.
05:18Because 300 wins the game.
05:19Burnses have 214.
05:21The Williams have 39 points.
05:24And the Burnses are 86 points away from a win.
05:27So, Gail, it's you against Vicki.
05:29Here we go.
05:31In 1930, Grant Wood completed his work on American Gothic.
05:35What percentage of the people knew what American Gothic is?
05:40American Gothic.
05:43Grant Wood was the guy who completed his work on that.
05:47Sounds like the architecture of the house I lived.
05:50Okay.
05:51Gail, what did you say?
05:51I said a fairly low number.
05:5523%.
05:5623%.
05:57Okay.
05:57Perhaps people who had taken, had college classes perhaps would know.
06:03All right.
06:0323%.
06:04What do you say, Vicki?
06:05Well, I thought a few more people, I thought a few more people than 23% would know.
06:11All right.
06:12So, I said 57.
06:13You said 57%.
06:1357%.
06:14Okay.
06:15Well, let's find out.
06:17All right.
06:18How many people knew what American Gothic was?
06:2339%.
06:24You're the closest, Gail, to getting 39 points.
06:31Now we have an interesting point.
06:33You have 253 points, Gail.
06:35If 39% knew the answer, that means that 61% did not know the answer.
06:42You can get those 61 points and win the game by telling me what American Gothic was, or you
06:48can challenge Vicki over here.
06:50If she knows, she gets the points.
06:51If she doesn't know, you win the game.
06:53How do you want to play it?
06:55I'm going to take the question.
06:56You are.
06:57For 61 points for the game, what is American Gothic?
07:02Literature.
07:02No.
07:04Sorry.
07:05You don't get the points.
07:06You have a chance to stay alive here, Vicki.
07:09For 61 points, tell me about Grant Wood's American Gothic.
07:12What is it?
07:12Well, I think I remember studying about this in college.
07:15Is it painting?
07:16Right, George.
07:17You get the 60.
07:18Oh, my God.
07:20You have 100 points.
07:21Yay.
07:24Woo.
07:26Alone.
07:27Alone.
07:29Well, it was that close.
07:31We're going to take a break.
07:32But we'll check the score first.
07:33Burns is 253.
07:35Williams, 100.
07:38We got the same here.
07:47Welcome back to Play the Percentages.
07:49In case a couple wins five games in a row, they win something pretty nice.
07:52What is it, Jay Stewart?
07:53It's a brand-new car!
07:57The new Pontiac-centered group.
07:59The small car, the sensible and sensational, clean lines, newly designed grill, and the right size for moving in city traffic.
08:06Furnished by Pontiac.
08:08Now, back to Jeff Edwards.
08:11I don't know why this audience reminds me of the zoo at feeding time, but that's incredible.
08:15Nice to have you all here.
08:16Really fun.
08:18Okay.
08:18Where are we?
08:19Let's check the score, because we're pretty close to win for the Burnses, but the Williams are still hanging in there.
08:23The Burnses have 253.
08:25The Williams have 100, and it's the men against each other.
08:28Again, the Burnses could win here.
08:30They're only 47 points from that magic 300.
08:33Gentlemen, what percentage of the people we polled could tell us who is the Prince of Darkness?
08:44Who is the Prince of Darkness?
08:46What percentage of the people could come up with that answer?
08:50Everybody locked in.
08:51Okay, John, what'd you say?
08:52I thought a real high percentage would know that, 89%.
08:54John says 89%.
08:56What do you say, Dennis?
08:57For some reason, I'm right around 67%, and I haven't the foggiest notion why.
09:04Well, okay, I like your reasoning.
09:07Remember, anybody who hits it right on the nose wins the game right then, and $13,000.
09:11So, let's see.
09:12John, you said 89%.
09:13You said 67%.
09:15How many people could tell us who the Prince of Darkness was?
09:1967%.
09:20She's a virgin.
09:38She's a virgin.
09:41See?
09:42She's a virgin.
09:43Absolutely. Don't you guys go away yet. I want to say goodbye, but first of all, I want to talk to you.
09:53First of all, Dennis, who is the Prince of Darkness?
09:56I don't know. I'm afraid of him, but I don't know.
09:58See, now let me tell you something, because this is really fascinating to me.
10:02Dennis is an ex-minister, see, and the Prince of Darkness is Satan.
10:06I don't believe in Satan.
10:07You better believe in something, because you just picked up $13,000 in that percentage guess, and I think that's terrific.
10:17You saved your championship.
10:18Not only that, but you have a grand total in winnings now, William says, of $16,100.
10:26Is that right?
10:31You picked that number out of a dream.
10:33I picked 67 out of my head.
10:35And as John, I believe in, and there's a power greater than we are working back there somewhere, and I pulled 67 out of the spheres.
10:43Boy, okay.
10:43He said that this morning before we came on.
10:45Is that what he said?
10:46Interesting conversation, isn't it?
10:47Yes.
10:47He said that you're at 67, okay.
10:49Well, congratulations.
10:50Hang on a second, because you're going for the bonus round in just a minute.
10:53Gail and John, boy, they did so well.
10:55You know, I know you're sharing in their excitement, so they kind of ripped the game away from you.
10:58And we thank you very much for coming here and playing the percentages.
11:01Great players.
11:02Nice to have fun.
11:04Bye-bye.
11:05Nice to meet you, John.
11:06Take it easy.
11:06Big hand for where the birds is.
11:08And now, I'll reach you down below as we play the bonus game for $2,500.
11:17I don't know if my heart's going to show you that.
11:21Vicki says she doesn't know if her heart can take it, and she's holding the wrong side.
11:24Yeah, that's it.
11:25That's the one over there.
11:26Why don't you salute the flag?
11:27Well, you did really great, and let's hope you can pick some more numbers out of the air like that, Dennis,
11:32because it's time for the bonus round now.
11:34Just the way this works.
11:35I'm going to read you questions which were posed to people everywhere.
11:38For each question, I'm going to show you three possible answers about which you're going to have to make some decisions.
11:43You make the right decisions, and you win points.
11:45You reach 100 points, and I'll give you $2,500 in cash.
11:49Who's going to go first?
11:50We'll stick with the first winning combination we had.
11:54All right.
11:54My wife will go first.
11:54That's Vicki.
11:55Vicki, are you able to talk now?
11:56Oh, yeah, I think so.
11:57I can always talk.
11:59All righty.
12:00Here's your question, Vicki.
12:01In 1917, the United States paid Denmark $25 million.
12:07What did the 100 people think that we interviewed, what did the 100 people think that we got in return?
12:13Did they think we got the Virgin Islands, Greenland, or Guam?
12:18Now, before you go on, let me remind you, two of these islands were named by the people surveyed.
12:23One was not.
12:23In other words, it scored zero points.
12:25Select the one that was named.
12:26I'll give you whatever percentage points you got.
12:28But if you select the one that was not named, in other words, the one that got zero, you go bust, and the bonus game is over.
12:32So these three islands, the Virgin Islands, Greenland, or Guam,
12:36which of these three did the people think was what we paid all those millions of dollars for to Denmark?
12:41Can I ask you what year that was?
12:43Did you say 1917?
12:44I will check and see if I said that.
12:46You gave me a year.
12:46Yes, I did say 1917.
12:47Right.
12:48I think they probably would say the Virgin Islands.
12:51Let's go with Virgin Islands first.
12:53No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
12:54Is it okay?
12:56It's up to you, Vicki, whatever you want.
12:57Okay.
12:59Let's take Guam first.
13:00Let's take Guam.
13:01Okay.
13:01We'll go with Guam.
13:02Okay.
13:02You're going to go with Guam.
13:03You know what I mean.
13:04Instead of the Virgins.
13:05Okay.
13:07If you hit zero, you're out of business.
13:09How many people picked Guam?
13:11No, you hit the zero.
13:13Dennis, you were right.
13:14The Virgin Islands happened to be the right answer.
13:17How many people picked 33% for the Virgin Islands and Greenland got 17%, but you picked
13:22the one with zero.
13:23You're out of business for the bonus round, but you have $16,100.
13:27You're a great champion.
13:28You'll meet some new challenges here in just a moment.
13:30We're going to take a break and we'll be back in just a moment.
13:33We're going to take a break and play the percentages.
13:34We're going to take a break and play the percentages.
13:49Dennis and Vicki, you're our champions.
13:51$16,100.
13:52We've reset the bonus and we start off now.
13:55You know, it grows each time somebody doesn't get it, it grows by $1,000.
13:57So we're starting with $10,000.
13:59Hit it on the nose again, you've got yourself another $10,000.
14:02Of course, we want to meet some new challengers and Jay Stewart will introduce them.
14:05Jay?
14:05She studied nursing and her name is Rebecca.
14:09He's a doctor and his name is Peter.
14:11And the married name they share is Bernstein.
14:19Hi, Rebecca.
14:20Hi.
14:21How are you doing?
14:22Fine.
14:22Well, I'm a little nervous.
14:24Are you?
14:25Nothing to be nervous about.
14:26We have a good time here.
14:27You studied nursing?
14:28Mm-hmm.
14:28Are you a nurse?
14:29Yes, I'm selling real estate now.
14:31You're a nurse and selling real estate.
14:33Well, with some of those prices, you probably need your stethoscope with you
14:36and all the equipment when they take a look at that.
14:38She tells them the prices, she has to revive them.
14:40Yeah, I guess so.
14:41Right.
14:42Peter, you're a doctor?
14:43Mm-hmm.
14:43What's your specialty?
14:44Family practice, general practice.
14:46Good deal.
14:46I'm glad to see a general practitioner.
14:48And you still make house calls and all that?
14:50Yes, I do.
14:50But you look pretty good.
14:52Yeah, you look great.
14:52You look pretty healthy.
14:53Oh, thank you.
14:53I like Rebecca saying that better than I like you saying it.
14:57Okay, Peter, Rebecca, you know how we play the game.
14:59You ready to go?
15:00Yes.
15:01Let's start off with Rebecca against Vicki.
15:03And here's your question.
15:05It now costs 15 cents to mail a letter in this country.
15:09Of the 300 people we surveyed,
15:11what percentage could tell us the amount it costs to mail a standard-sized postcard?
15:18Of the 300 people, how many mailed in their answers and we haven't seen them yet?
15:22All locked in?
15:23Can you lock in, Rebecca?
15:24Oh, okay.
15:26Remember, once the numbers are locked in, they can't be changed.
15:30Okay, Rebecca set in.
15:31Rebecca, what did you say?
15:32What percentage could tell us what it costs to mail a standard-sized postcard?
15:3672%.
15:37I think three out of four people should know that.
15:40Yep, I suppose they should.
15:42We'll find out.
15:42Vicki, what do you say?
15:43Well, I think three out of four should know it, but I'm not quite sure three out of four would know it.
15:48So I said 61%.
15:5061%.
15:50Right.
15:51Okay.
15:52So, Rebecca, you say 72%.
15:53You say 61%.
15:55How many people knew how much money it costs to mail a standard-sized postcard?
16:0059%.
16:01You're the closer you get 59 points, Williams.
16:09You guys are giving me fits.
16:11You know, you're within two again of knocking off our bonus round, or rather, our jackpot.
16:15This is what you did last game when you finally knocked it off.
16:17Okay, you got 59 points.
16:19Now, if 59% of the people knew the answer to that, that means that 41% did not know the answer.
16:24And you can get those 41 points, Vicki, by simply telling me what it costs to mail that standard-sized postcard.
16:30Or you can challenge Rebecca over there.
16:32How do you want to play it?
16:33Do you think she knows, or do you want to take it yourself?
16:35Oh, she's got a pretty good poker face.
16:37I think I'm going to challenge her.
16:40You are?
16:40Yeah.
16:41Just on the off chance.
16:43Rebecca, you're challenged.
16:44Get it right.
16:45You get the points.
16:46Miss it.
16:46And the points go over here to Vicki.
16:4841 points at stake.
16:49How much does it cost to mail a standard-sized postcard?
16:52Ten cents.
16:53Right you are.
16:54You get 41 points.
16:5841 points here to Rebecca and Peter.
17:02And so the Bernsteins have 41 points, the Williams 59 points, and now it's Dennis against Peter.
17:07You all set, Peter?
17:09That's you, Peter.
17:10That's me.
17:10Yeah.
17:10You all set?
17:11Questions get harder, Peter.
17:13Okay.
17:14Here we go.
17:15The ancient Greeks, who had a god for everything, were especially fond of Bacchus.
17:21What percentage of the 300 men we polled could name what Bacchus represented?
17:28What percentage knew what Bacchus represented?
17:31Not Mr. Magoo, as we all know and love.
17:33Okay, Peter, so did you enter it?
17:37Peter, press the green button?
17:38Okay, I want to make sure that we do that.
17:40I can tell you're not a surgeon.
17:42Okay.
17:42What percentage, Peter, do you think knew what the god Bacchus represented?
17:55Nineteen.
17:55You think it was nineteen percent?
17:57Okay, Peter says nineteen percent.
17:59What do you say, Dennis?
18:00Well, I think approximately 48 percent of the people out there probably know who the god
18:05of Bacchus is.
18:06So you're saying 48 percent.
18:08All right, let's take a look.
18:09Nineteen percent over here.
18:11Forty-eight percent over here.
18:13What percentage of the men we interviewed could tell us what Bacchus represented?
18:16Thirty-six percent.
18:17You're in the coach.
18:17You're going to slip 36 points.
18:21You now have a total of 95 points, Dennis.
18:25Now, of course, you know that if 36 knew the answer, that means that 64 percent did
18:30not know the answer.
18:30Hefty amount of points that you can get yourself by telling me what the god Bacchus represents,
18:35or you can challenge Peter over here if you think he doesn't know.
18:38How do you want to play it?
18:39Well, I don't believe that there's many high school dropouts that have doctorates,
18:43so I'm not going to give him the question.
18:45I think Peter's probably a pretty sharp fellow.
18:47I think he knows that, right?
18:47All right.
18:48For 64 points, tell me, what does the god of Bacchus represent?
18:52It's the god of hate.
18:57No.
18:59Dennis, I'm sorry.
19:00No points there.
19:02And, Peter, you get a chance to prove that, whether you know it or not,
19:05because you can pick up 64 points here by telling him the god of Bacchus.
19:08What does it represent?
19:09Well, I've heard a lot about Bacchanalian festivals, but I've never been to one.
19:13Uh-huh.
19:14The god of pleasure?
19:16Judges, I'll have to ask the judge.
19:19That's an acceptable answer, Jeff.
19:20Gary, my job, that's it.
19:22You get the points, 64 points.
19:26You have a total of 105.
19:29We also would have taken the god of wine, or the god of revelry, or the god of fertility,
19:35and all of those sound pleasurable to me, so you got the points.
19:38All right.
19:39So, we check the score now.
19:41Bernstein's 105, Williams 95.
19:43We'll take a break, and we'll be back in just a moment.
19:45Welcome back to Play the Percentages.
19:59Well, we're going to be out of time, so we're going to pick the show up tomorrow.
20:03Is that okay with you guys?
20:04That's fine.
20:05All right.
20:05You're not going to be out making any house calls or anything tomorrow.
20:08I'll make this call.
20:09You'll make this call.
20:10Good enough.
20:10Okay, doctor.
20:11105 points over here for the Bernsteins.
20:13Williams City with 95 points.
20:15They're our champions.
20:16You're not too far behind.
20:17A lot better off than you started this show with.
20:18Oh, my.
20:19They started this show with zero in case you weren't around and knocked us off for $13,000
20:23by hitting the jackpot.
20:24And tomorrow, the jackpot's going to be worth $10,000.
20:27I hope you'll be back.
20:28We'll be back in the next show.
