00:00the inside of the house was scorched pretty badly this was an intentionally set fire he
00:17was stabbed multiple times it was very much a whodunner my son told me no mom he's been
00:25murdered this wasn't a home invasion it was somebody that was welcomed in
00:30the video I mean you can't even hope for something like that there's no way where's she going it was
00:39shocking
00:5556 year old Andy McGuffey is cooking up a feast for his stepdaughter Amanda and his granddaughter
01:14Laney Andy came into my life I was around eight years old and he had met my mom and I immediately
01:22became his little sidekick no matter what he was doing he loved being in the kitchen
01:27it's tamale day that's it our favorite papa he would always call me and my daughter to come up
01:36and have us try a new recipe and we loved it my daughter loved her papa
01:42Andy's wife Angela isn't at tonight's dinner she has COVID and is recovering at her father's house
01:54I got out of the hospital in October they had forecasted some very strong tornadoes and since
02:05Andy worked the night shift and I was on oxygen still I didn't want to be there in our home by myself
02:14okay that's all done all right we're gonna head out see ya
02:21I did speak to him Thursday evening and how are you my love he said that he would be picking me up
02:37as soon as he got off work the next day and we said good night I love you
02:43and that is the last time that I spoke with him okay bye
02:48next morning Andy's boss calls Angela Andy failed to turn up for his 1 a.m. shift
03:02I said well I'm very concerned because I've been with him for 30 years and he's never missed work
03:11and not called my son Josh lives a few miles from our home and so I asked him if he would mind going
03:22over to the house and just checking on Andy to make sure he was okay
03:25Blanchard police officers respond to a 9-1-1 call from Josh
03:38the patrol officer could see that there was scorching around the front door
03:50he went ahead and went inside saw that the inside of the house was scorched pretty badly
03:59he went into Andy's bedroom and saw his feet at the end of the bed
04:06even though upon initial glance you couldn't really see how he had died
04:15they were relatively certain that it was something that they wanted us to come out and investigate
04:21pretty quickly
04:23agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation arrive on scene along with the fire marshal
04:33went into Andy's bedroom he was covered up pretty well
04:41he was stabbed multiple times
04:45I'm counting at least 11 stab wounds
04:52we observed glacerations and cuts to the head to the neck to the face to the chest
04:57because of the widths of the stab marks it looked like more than one weapon that was used to stab Andy
05:05we quickly came to the conclusion that Andy had been murdered
05:13Josh calls his mom Angela
05:20it was really kind of surreal
05:26because it sounded like he was crying
05:31but my son doesn't cry
05:33mom
05:35he said mom Andy's dead
05:37and I screamed
05:39and um
05:41and I said
05:41did he have a heart attack
05:43and that's when
05:46Josh told me
05:47no mom he's been murdered
05:49and
05:55you know then I of course I just lost it
05:58and I was like no that can't be
06:00that can't be
06:01that just can't be
06:02agents searched the scene for clues
06:11there was a like a recliner
06:16and that's where you can really kind of first see the damage that had taken place
06:21because it was burned and melted
06:23you can see this gigantic black spot on the floor
06:27the boards there were just scorched
06:32I mean just completely blacked out
06:35you also had rolls of paper towels
06:38all laid out
06:40specifically to try to spread the fire
06:44we noticed they were aerosol cans that were put onto the stoves
06:53had the fire been able to spread into the kitchen area the aerosol canisters would have made explosions
06:59this was absolutely not an accidental fire
07:03it wasn't a mishap
07:05it wasn't a careless cook
07:06a careless dropping of a cigarette
07:09this was an intentionally set fire
07:11whoever this was
07:13didn't have to force entry
07:14I thought
07:16this wasn't a home invasion
07:18this wasn't somebody that kicked in the door
07:20and just went to town on him
07:22it was
07:24somebody that was welcomed in
07:26Angela got on scene
07:36she had an oxygen tank on
07:39she was using a walker to be able to get around
07:41my heart just went out to her
07:43because she was very very sick
07:45Angela told us that she had spoken with Andy
07:50the night before
07:52around 6 or 7 at night
07:54then she was woken up the next morning by a phone call from Andy's boss
07:58saying that Andy hadn't arrived at 1 a.m. for work
08:02so Andy was killed
08:04during that time frame
08:06did you notice anything missing from the property?
08:10Josh was able to pick up that there was a lot of property that was missing
08:14there was like a laptop that was missing
08:16purses, DVDs
08:19neck massager
08:21and Andy's white Toyota
08:25was missing
08:26I found out that there were a large number of firearms
08:29that were missing from the house
08:31including
08:32a pink BB gun
08:34we talked to a lot of the friends
08:38a lot of the family
08:39there was nobody that was upset with Andy
08:42there was nobody that had any kind of motive
08:43to hurt him or anything like that
08:45so you know
08:47you still don't have a suspect
08:49it was very much a whodunit
08:50while investigators put out a bolo for Andy's white pickup
08:59agents worked to trace the missing items
09:02agent Gatlin just happened to think
09:08well I'll check leads online
09:09a database for pawnbrokers across the United States
09:13hey Matt
09:15we got a hit on the pink BB gun
09:17he was able to determine that a pink BB gun had been pawned
09:21and a neck massager had been pawned
09:23the pawn shop is in Kansas
09:32nearly 300 miles away
09:34agents review the store surveillance footage
09:40at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation
09:42agent horn says
09:44she was able to go to the pawn shop and get video
09:46play it for when the store opens
09:48play it for when the store opens
09:53there what's that
10:05got the pink BB gun
10:09got the pink BB gun and the neck massager
10:21these two people come in to this pawn shop in Kansas
10:25one of them placed a large number of firearms on the counter
10:41one of them was you know a large individual
10:47punch in
10:57they had items that we believe was pretty clearly belonging to the victim Andy
11:07this unidentified person starts converse with a pawnbroker to try to sell that property
11:15oh there she is she's making the deal
11:21zoom in
11:23they signed the paperwork
11:27can we get that ticket up
11:29we were able to get signed pawn tickets
11:33punch in
11:35and we come up with the name Debbie Simft
11:39Get me everything you can on Debbie Simft
11:41S-E-N-F-T
11:45we're not ready to say that these folks killed Andy McGuffey
11:51but what we can say for sure is that they had property that very much looks like Andy McGuffey's
11:57the next morning investigators receive Andy's phone records
12:11the next morning investigators receive Andy's phone records
12:15so what we were able to see there is who Andy was last talking to the day before the homicide and
12:23some of the messages that were going back and forth
12:25that's a lot of messages from the same number
12:29the text messages were trying to discuss how to meet up with each other
12:45look at this
12:47the tone of the messages was that they knew each other but they hadn't seen each other in quite some time
12:59Andy's conversation was very much a social form
13:05Andy had even sent a picture of some alcohol that he was drinking at his house saying you know
13:13basically saying yeah sure come on by
13:15Andy arranged to meet this
13:17person at his house on the night he was
13:19killed
13:21we gotta run that number
13:23the database
13:25so
13:27he plugs the phone number in and we come up
13:29with the name
13:31hey Matt you're not gonna believe it
13:33it's Debbie Simft
13:35Debbie Simft
13:37but I'm like hold on a minute
13:39that is the same person from that pawn shop
13:41and so you know my initial thought was
13:45who is this person
13:47why are they talking with Andy
13:49Agent Miller calls Andy's family
13:51to see if they know a Debbie Simft
13:53Hi Mrs. McGuffey
13:55this is Agent Miller from OSBI
13:59he asked if I knew who Deborah Simft was
14:03and
14:05I had never heard that name before
14:07never
14:09thank you for your time
14:11I didn't know honestly
14:13what to think at that point
14:15what we weren't able to figure out
14:17is what kind of connection
14:19Debbie
14:21and Andy had
14:23you know we don't know
14:25if it's a friend
14:27you know at the very worst a girlfriend
14:29or something like that that perhaps Angela didn't know about
14:31Andy's family salvage what they can from his home
14:37I believe that going through the house
14:41and trying to clean up and everything
14:43it's it's hard
14:45it leaves a smell that you can't ever forget
14:47we didn't want to put mom through any more trouble
14:51since her COVID
14:53her breathing and stuff like that
14:55didn't want her to be around the smoke
14:59we wanted to see how bad it was first
15:01before trying to let her go in
15:05he had put so much hard work into that beautiful home
15:09it was just taken away destroyed
15:13and that was hard
15:15that was really hard
15:21agents contact Andy's neighbors
15:23to find out if they saw anything suspicious
15:25on the night he was murdered
15:27during our process of interviewing the neighbors
15:31one woman that we were able to talk with had said that her husband
15:37had noticed a an unusual vehicle
15:41at Andy's house the night before
15:45he gave us a lot of good information
15:47he he said that it was like a dark colored like a charcoal
15:51four-door sedan
15:53and my immediate thought was some sort of Toyota
15:55or something like that from the description that he had given
15:59another interesting point
16:01was that he had noticed
16:03there was a large black dog
16:05in the car as well
16:07we looked at that as a potential source of
16:11further evidence
16:13you know you think
16:15maybe the person that's driving that car
16:17could have something to do with Andy's death
16:19agents piece together Debbie Semp's movements in the lead up to Andy's murder
16:27they find that she rented a gray Toyota Corolla in Texas three weeks earlier
16:33we were able to get the plate information for the gray car
16:37I get that to our dispatch and be able to have that entered
16:41yep
16:43got it
16:45a buddy of mine within the Oklahoma Highway Patrol
16:47he tells me there was an accident
16:49a patrol officer responded to a crash involving the Corolla at 6am
16:53the morning after Andy was killed
16:55they were able to provide you know copies of the accident
16:59the citation
17:01as well as the video
17:03from that accident
17:05here we go
17:21the vehicle had gone off the side of the road
17:23and hit one of the blinking signs
17:25that was on the side of the road
17:29how you doing
17:31where's mom at?
17:34she was heading to Petro
17:36I was following behind her
17:38and then the tire blew
17:40you were following her
17:41I was following behind her on the highway
17:43okay
17:44and then the tire blew
17:45and I didn't even have time to react
17:47he was able to provide
17:48the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper
17:50with a name and date of birth
17:51what's your last name?
17:52Mussel
17:53spell it
17:54M-E-S-S-E-K-E
17:56first name?
17:59Zachary
18:00Z-A-C-H-A-R-Y
18:02yeah
18:03who is Zachary Musselt?
18:07come on back to my call
18:08during that time
18:09he called his mom to have her turn around
18:12so that she can pick up Zachary
18:15hello
18:16who am I speaking with this Trooper Muller
18:18with the highway patrol?
18:19I'm speaking with Debbie Simmons
18:21Debbie who?
18:23Simmons, that's my mom
18:24okay I guess I have your son here
18:26was he following you?
18:27wait
18:28did he just say his mom is Debbie Sempt?
18:32I gotta pause it right there
18:34the person seen with Debbie Sempt in the security footage from the Kansas pawn shop
18:44is Zachary Musselt
18:46mother and son
18:5019 minutes later
18:53Debbie Sempt arrives at the scene
18:59does it appear for me to get out and talk?
19:01yeah you can get out and talk sure
19:03Debbie arrived
19:05the conversation between the three parties on scene in that accident
19:09which is you know the Trooper, Zachary and Debbie was none of it made any sense
19:14thank you so much for calling me
19:16thank you so much for calling me
19:17you're welcome
19:18my brother was the one that was supposed to be driving the car
19:21but he went off with a friend
19:23yeah
19:24and left us in the middle of nowhere
19:25uh oh
19:26trying to get to the Petro
19:27okay
19:28better than that
19:31he knows
19:32he knows that they're acting weird
19:34they're acting sketchy
19:35you can tell that from the Trooper's demeanor
19:38Agent Matt Miller calls Andy's family to ask if they recognize the name Zachary Musselt
19:48Matt actually relayed the name Musselt
19:59I said wait a minute
20:01Zachary Musselt
20:04that is Andy's nephew
20:07who we haven't seen in 12 years
20:11my mom kind of lost it and she goes oh my word
20:17Debbie sent that is Andy's half-sister
20:22I said yeah if you would have said Debbie Musselt
20:25I would have been able to tell you right from the beginning
20:29I did not know if she had ever gotten married
20:33and that her last name had never changed
20:36our two suspects in this case were actually related to the victim
20:42and that is what is really surprising
20:49we had figured out that they had pawned items that belonged to Andy in Kansas
20:55we then know that Zach was in an accident in Oklahoma City around 6 o'clock in the morning
21:01the day after Andy was killed
21:04but what we don't know is what happened the day of the murder
21:08and that's our job to figure out
21:18Agents secure the GPS data for Debbie Samp's phone
21:21Lieutenant Gatlin was able to plot out Debbie's cell phone locations
21:27and determine that she was in fact in the area during our period of time
21:31where Andy may have been killed
21:33in between that 6 to 7 time to 1 a.m.
21:37hey Matt, come look at this
21:48around 6 o'clock
21:49Debbie was at Love's travel stop in Oklahoma City
21:53pretty close to Andy's house
21:55we better get down there
21:57no
22:10Agents search the area around Love's for clues
22:12that might reveal Debbie and Zachary's movements during that time
22:16so next door to this Love's is a car wash
22:19we go through the car wash
22:22Dave, look
22:30we actually find the victim's truck
22:33bingo
22:42we were able to get a hold of the owner of the car wash
22:44Major Miller from the OSBI
22:46we need to see your surveillance footage now
22:50the owner says yeah I've got I've got video cameras all over that thing
23:02I started watching the videos
23:05load up the outside camera
23:08around 1 30 on the 15th
23:14I wasn't quite sure what I was going to get at the most
23:17I thought at that point to get you know some sort of pinpoint location
23:21that I could get some sort of forensic information
23:23or forensic evidence for the case
23:28what I never could have expected
23:30is that I would have videos better than that forensic evidence
23:34wait, stop
23:45on the video from the car wash
23:47it's around 1 30
23:49you have them pulling in
23:51in the Penske moving truck
23:55but you also have them pulling in
23:57in Andy's white Toyota Tacoma
24:00you can see them parking Andy's truck
24:16and then parking the Penske truck at the car wash
24:21switch to the inside
24:28switch to the inside
24:34let's zoom in
24:39and pause it there
24:40what you see is an inspection of several different weapons that are in the car
24:44is an inspection of several different weapons that are in the car
24:49and Zach almost kind of taking stock of what they have
24:53some headlights peer towards the top of the frame
24:59switch to the next bay
25:03Debbie then pulls the Corolla into the next all over
25:25so in one bay you have the Toyota Corolla
25:30switch back
25:31switch back
25:35and then in the next stall over
25:37is Andy's truck
25:40and then you have the Penske moving truck
25:42that's concealing what they're actually doing
25:53they both look straight up at the camera in one of the bays
25:58can you believe it?
26:01but instead of stopping and moving
26:04they just keep on doing what they're doing
26:06Andy's truck had a camper shell on it
26:10it was open so that they could then load property straight from the back of the truck
26:14into the Penske moving truck
26:16they're unloading Andy's stuff and putting it in their truck
26:21figuring out what they wanted to keep what they didn't want to keep
26:23pause it zoom in
26:33there the neck massager from Andy's home
26:38because I've been involved in this case from the very beginning
26:41it's very exciting especially whenever you start recognizing things that are actually coming out of the truck
26:50take me to the outside camera
27:00and on the other side of the car wash
27:04you can see them actually throwing property away in the dumpster in the back
27:14it was really cold blooded that anything that they had taken from Andy that they didn't necessarily want
27:18they just threw away in a large dumpster behind the car wash
27:33take me back to the inside camera
27:35wait what's that?
27:42Zachary pulls out a knife from the truck
27:49walks off screen
27:51and then comes back wiping the knife off on his pants
27:57that could have been our murder weapon
28:00he was destroying evidence
28:03they spend four or five hours unloading property into this Penske
28:21once you can kind of tell they're starting to wrap up
28:25they're about to leave
28:27they start wiping Andy's truck down
28:30in the anticipation that somebody is going to find it
28:36and so you can see them kind of going through in their mind everywhere that they've touched
28:40which is like you know the handle on the camper shell
28:43the door handle
28:47you would never in a thousand years say
28:50well yeah I hope they we've got a video of them driving it in
28:53and then trying to destroy evidence by wiping their fingerprints off everything
28:56there's no way
28:57there's no way
29:02Debbie and Zachary leave the car wash at 5 30 a.m.
29:09it's pretty clear at that point there were no other suspects other than Debbie or Zachary
29:15so that's when the decision was made to go ahead and type up that arrest warrant
29:18the family are left reeling after receiving the news that Andy's half-sister and nephew could be involved in his murder
29:31it was extremely difficult for me to comprehend because
29:36they had dropped so far off of my radar you know I mean as far as I knew we had no contact with them at all
29:49there were no words to explain how shocked we were that family members could do that
29:55it was hard to wrap my mind around all of it
29:59just to know that that someone in his family was capable of that just made it too hard
30:04agents pinged Debbie's phone to pinpoint her location
30:10it reveals that she's in Wyoming
30:14agents call local law enforcement to make the arrest
30:18Wyoming enlisted a couple of their guys to kind of wait in a certain part of the state that they assumed that they would probably be traveling through
30:27and they just waited for a Penske truck to come by
30:30you got eyes on them
30:33they confirmed pretty easily that Debbie was driving the truck
30:37and then radioed their counterparts on the highway patrol
30:40when the moment's right bring them in
30:46hand lock and see them
30:49step outside of the vehicle slowly
30:52keep your hands up
30:53it was very peaceful
30:55neither one put up a fight or anything like that
30:58slowly
31:01turn around hands behind your head
31:03and we were able to get Debbie and Zach taken to jail
31:08all right let's get this thing told
31:10Debbie is one of the more unassuming people that I've ever arrested
31:15but Andy was stabbed multiple times
31:18so whenever you have somebody that was stabbed that many times in a brutal brutal attack
31:25you know you're dealing with a very dangerous person
31:30one of the biggest questions that I had was the motivation because at that point you know we had no idea what they might say
31:36agents travel to Wyoming
31:48they analyze the moving truck that Debbie was driving at the time of her arrest
31:53so we found
31:54not only his ID in his wallet with his debit cards and things like that
31:59but we found you know one of the guns that was reported missing that we had a serial number four
32:04we found a
32:07wedding picture
32:09there was a large gun case
32:11but there was all kinds of stuff
32:13glasses that were wrapped in dish towels
32:16and I thought to myself why would you steal that
32:19like if it was not nailed down they they took it
32:33next the agents interview the suspects they start with Zachary
32:38the first thing that I noticed about Zach is that he was wearing the exact same clothing that he was in the Kansas pawn shop video
32:45Zachary tells the agents that he and his mom Debbie were relocating from Texas to Colorado
32:52Zachary described stopping at different churches to try to get gas money
32:59as well as looking for handouts for food or anything else that they could possibly get from the goodwill of others
33:06they paid Andy a brief visit on their way through Oklahoma
33:09I said okay well what were you driving and he tells me a four-door gray like Toyota Corolla so that shows you you're on the right track
33:19the neighbors had told us there was a large black dog in the car so I said Chance you had any dogs or anything like that with you and he's like yeah
33:28so you know you have another little grain of sand that lets you know that you're on the right path
33:33so you stayed with Andy for an hour to max right
33:39that's right and then we hit the road
33:42so what did you and your mom do for those few hours you were with Andy
33:46he told me that he was eating eggs and sausage at Andy's house
33:50which was a valuable piece of information because we found plates of food that had eggs and sausage
33:56Agent Miller reveals to Zachary that Andy McGuffey was murdered and his home set on fire
34:03Was there some sort of disagreement? Did a fight break out?
34:10Can you tell me what happened?
34:12But whenever we got to the part where Andy was murdered he would just say he doesn't remember
34:17so you move on past that until I show him a picture of him inside the pawn shop and I say
34:25Is that you?
34:29Yeah
34:31Who's that with you?
34:33That's my mom
34:35What were you guys doing? I don't know. Well let me show you some of this video
34:38Did you agree that it looks like you're pawning something?
34:49Yeah, what are you pawning? I don't know
34:55Where would you get that sort of stuff?
34:57I don't know. So, you know, it's pretty clear at that point that even with, you know, pressing or, you know, whatever you can do or tips or tricks that you can try to get them to tell you the truth
35:07that he's probably not going to
35:13Next, agents interview Zachary's mother, Debbie
35:17Debbie was certainly the leader of the two. I mean, he was her adult son
35:24I mean, he was twice the size that she is in both height and weight
35:28But, um, she was definitely calling the shots
35:32Do you know Andy McGuffey?
35:34She says, yeah, well, that's that's my half-brother
35:38Zach just told us you went to see Andy
35:41I just tried to point out what we already knew
35:44Along with some of the information that Zach had told us to see if she would change her story
35:50I ain't saying no more
35:52I want my lawyer
35:53I want my lawyer
35:54And what that ultimately ended with is, is her just asking for a lawyer
35:59So the interview pretty much, pretty much stopped after that
36:02But, by that point, we do believe that we've got enough information
36:05So, Lieutenant Gatlin and I charge both Zachary and Debbie
36:10With murder in the first degree and arson
36:12And arson
36:19February 14th, 2023
36:22Debbie Sempt and Zachary Muzzat stand trial for the murder of Andy McGuffey
36:29Prosecutors stepped through the events that led to his killing
36:32The night that Andy was murdered, what they ended up doing was parking the Penske that the loves
36:44And then taking their rented Toyota Corolla out to Andy's
36:49We know that they were at Andy's house
36:53We had found the plates of food more than one person had been eating
37:00One of them probably distracted them, the other hit them, and then they both stabbed them
37:05One of them probably distracted them, the other hit them, and then they both stabbed them
37:07So, Debbie and Zach both then load up all of his possessions in his own truck
37:29And their car
37:38We believe they probably moved Andy's body from the living room
37:42To his bedroom because of how he was positioned and how he was wrapped up in the blanket
37:51And then they went to great lengths to try to set this fire to make sure that it would burn the house down
38:07They go back to their moving truck with two carloads full of Andy's property
38:16In the, you know, late, late hours
38:22They spend a long time unloading property from Andy's truck
38:28And they leave around 5.30 in the morning
38:34Debbie and Zach made it to Kansas
38:40Where the pink BB gun had been pawned and a neck massager had been pawned
38:45They kept going north up through Nebraska
38:49Three days later they were caught in Wyoming
38:52The motivation very much looks like it's just theft
39:05They made it very clear that they were very short on funds
39:08At that particular time and that was what they knew that they could do to get money
39:12I mean, that's just to take somebody out of this world
39:17For all their possessions is just a hard pill to swallow
39:21In the multiple times that I've had interaction with them
39:26There was never any sign of remorse
39:29Never any tears, nothing
39:32The jury finds both Debbie and Zachary guilty of first-degree murder
39:40The judge sentences them to life in prison without parole for Andy's killing
39:45And 35 years for arson
39:48That was a relief
39:50I'm actually grateful that that's the sentence that they went with
39:53A lot of tears and a lot of smiles
39:56I don't think it's overstating anything to say that that
40:01The videos of them unloading and loading stuff at the car wash was a nail in the coffin
40:06My brother was the one that was supposed to be driving the car
40:09But he went off with a friend
40:11Yeah
40:12And left us in the middle of nowhere
40:13Uh oh
40:14Trying to get to the Petro
40:16Investigators found no evidence that any of Debbie's brothers
40:20Had knowledge of or involvement in Andy's murder
40:28I'm both sad and angry that Andy no longer gets to be here
40:32To watch all the grandkids excel in life
40:38That they don't get to have their grandpa to go fishing with
40:41And have him cooking up his awesome food
40:45He cherished all of his all of his grandkids
40:49I'm pretty sure my mom still cries every day
40:53I'm almost positive she still cries every night
40:56I know she's got the last voicemail that he ever left her
40:59It would surprise me if she still doesn't listen to it every day
41:03Just so she can have his voice
41:08The impact that it's had on me for certain
41:11Is devastating
41:13I really think he was one of a kind
41:16I used to say he was my whole package
41:19My whole package
41:29I've been trying to fix that
41:30She also loves her
41:32And she's killing her
41:34So I'm not trying to answer her
41:37I will not listen to her
41:39I'm not trying to draw her
41:41But it's really easy to make a story
41:43So I can't talk to her
41:45I'm not trying to say
41:46To get her now
41:47I won't even know her
41:48I'll do my favorite...
41:50I can't talk to her
41:52I am not trying to enjoy the story
41:54I can't talk to her
