31 July - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your afternoon weather update from the Met Office.
00:03Many places dry and fine today with a lot of cloud,
00:07but some places seeing some hefty downpours.
00:09The view from space is a chaotic mess.
00:12We've seen some lumpy clouds and some heavy showers
00:15already moving across parts of Wales and southern England
00:18and a continued threat across southern England,
00:21especially of some thunderstorms during the afternoon.
00:25There's a Met Office yellow warning in place.
00:26Further north, many places will stay dry,
00:28but there are a few showers coming into northern England,
00:31northern and eastern Scotland staying pretty grey.
00:34Very breezy here without breaks of rain.
00:37Some brightness over the Midlands and Norfolk seeing some decent spells of sunshine too.
00:41But it's in the south, as I say, we've got those thunderstorms because it's quite warm.
00:45It's quite humid. Temperatures getting into the mid-20s in places further north,
00:49cooler and fresher feel compared to yesterday, mostly high teens or low 20s.
00:54Now, as we go into the afternoon and through this evening,
00:56we do have this warning get in place until 9 o'clock.
01:00Not everywhere in the warning will catch a downpour,
01:03but where they do occur, they could drop quite a lot of rain,
01:0520 to 30 millimetres of rain in a short space of time.
01:09That could cause some local flooding, hail, thunder and lightning also likely to be an extra hazard.
01:15So something to bear in mind, particularly for that evening rush hour across parts of the south,
01:18a lot of spray and surface water on the roads.
01:21Further north, still a few more showers coming into northern England
01:23and staying pretty damp through the night across the far north of Scotland,
01:28through Shetland and northeastern most parts of Aberdeenshire.
01:31Showers feeding in to the northwest of Scotland at times too.
01:34But many western areas becoming dry and clear.
01:38Temperatures dipping down into the low teens for most of us.
01:42On to Friday's weather, and again, it is a bit of a messy one.
01:46But for many places in the west, it'll be dry and bright.
01:49Probably a brighter day compared to today.
01:51A better chance of seeing some sunshine.
01:53Thickening cloud coming down the eastern side of England,
01:55making for a bit of a drab one.
01:57And a breezy one on some of those north sea coasts.
02:00Quite a brisk and fresh wind here.
02:02Obviously the rain and drizzle coming in through the afternoon,
02:05particularly into Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
02:06That's not going to feel very pleasant.
02:08Inland, a better chance of seeing some sunny spells.
02:10But there will also be a few showers across northwest England,
02:15down through the Midlands, towards the southeast.
02:17As I said, many western areas dry and bright.
02:19A better chance of seeing some sunshine,
02:21especially in western Scotland, west coast of Wales.
02:23Albeit with a fresher feel.
02:25Temperatures mostly only in the high teens.
02:28Maybe low 20s across the southeast.
02:29But again, feeling fresher compared to the humidity of today.
02:34As we go through Friday evening, not a great deal of change.
02:37The thicker cloud and the brisk wind may start to ease away
02:40from east Anglia.
02:41And the showers inland across England should start to fade as well.
02:45Leading into what will, for many of us,
02:47be a fine day on Saturday,
02:49under the ridge of high pressure that's moving in.
02:52But that doesn't last.
02:53There's a deep area of low pressure heading up to Iceland.
02:55That's going to bring some wet weather
02:57coming in across the country during the course of Sunday
03:00as these weather fronts move in.
03:01And then all eyes out in the Atlantic,
03:03because a potentially deep area of low pressure
03:06just brewing up here.
03:08Some uncertainty about the exact track
03:09and the intensity at this stage.
03:11But for Monday,
03:12this could bring a spell of very wet
03:14and unseasonably windy conditions.
03:17Something we're keeping a very close eye on.
03:19So make sure you stay up to date with the forecast.
03:21And the best way to do that, of course,
