WATCH: Teacher Jenny Boehm talks about the history of some of the buildings at the school.
Transcript
00:00This year I actually teach in one of the oldest classrooms, so in what we call the Annex Building.
00:06Each building has its own name.
00:08Originally that was the Infants Department and the Boys Department of the school,
00:13but now it's pretty much the domain of Year One.
00:16The rooms have actually been made a bit bigger than what they were originally,
00:21even though we have a lot less students than what the original teachers had to deal with inside those classrooms.
00:27It was primarily for the boys.
00:30They would have just sat in there with desks, at desks, so they didn't need floor space like we do today.
00:37And there would have been a lot of writing by ink or by on slates.
00:42And then as the years have progressed, we've actually put in a computer lab in there.
00:47The ceilings are very high, so we've still got the high ceilings that would have been popular in the times when those buildings were built.
00:54We've still got the boots scrapers outside some of the buildings for the children to have scraped their boots on in the past.
01:02So the outside of the buildings might not have changed very much in appearance, but definitely the insides have changed.
01:09I think it just shows the history of our school that we're not a school that was built in the last 20 years,
01:15that we're a school that's been here for a long time,
01:19and people have taken great care and shown respect for the buildings and the features of our school
01:24that make it what it is today for us to be able to celebrate 175 years.
01:30We'll see you next time.
