the names themselves are quite tricky in terms of spelling and pronunciation which could cause
00:04
confusion for residents and for postal deliveries um we've had multiple discussions about this and
00:10
i honestly believe we could be doing so much better in this space and i'd really like to see
00:15
wodonga establish a dedicated street naming committee again um something with community
00:21
input that ensures names are locally relevant easy to understand and reflect our identity
00:27
so yes i'll support the motion tonight but as i've said previously i hope we can look at improving
00:32
the process i won't be actually supporting the motion tonight while i um respect that council staff
00:41
might in the future work with developers to ensure a greater diversity of proposed names i think um
00:48
we have got we already have got some naming guidelines outlining the statutory requirements
00:55
for roads and features and like localities and in 2022 the gender equality act was recognized and
01:05
acknowledged in naming in the naming rules just um naming places after women and there are 13 naming
01:13
principles in those rules from a to n and principle g is for gender equality uh so when naming and putting
01:22
forward a naming proposal consideration should be given to gender equality uh what we have here is uh
01:30
one two three five men five men i'm not sure if that is representative of the avalon park estate
01:38
overall this is stage six that i think we can find some fine women to uh put to the names of streets in
01:47
wadamba and um we haven't done it this time i'm not going to add too much to it but um any standard
01:54
developers uh to be responsible for road naming however it is encouraged that there's a collaborative
02:01
effort to find um suitable themes and names for new roads and new subdivisions um and there are rules and
02:09
principles that need to be done you know it needs to be done according to the naming rules um and whilst
02:17
they i would assume that they have because it's been um you know all of these things go through
02:24
a reasonably rigorous um assessment um but it always is up to cancel when they come up for us to whether
02:34
we adopt them or not um i'll be supporting the recommendation to yes in this in this report but um
02:43
yeah i think we can do better but um we probably need to have maybe a workshop around how we implement
02:52
that going forward just briefly i will support the motion i agree with councillor aldrich about the
03:00
um need for easier spelling uh pronunciation to spelling of uh street names especially in new states
03:10
while the residents and any service providers are getting used to them um yes it would be uh nice to
03:21
be able to get the names out easily um it is the um right of the developers to uh pick those names and
03:30
uh um um while i um recognize uh council accounts uh point that uh gender equality act exists and
03:42
calls for uh more gender diversity in the names i uh i'm inclined to uh support the right of the
03:52
the developers to uh make the decision being here but uh yes um easier nicer nicer uh nicer stealth and
04:00
pronounced names are very welcome thank you
