00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:07Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies. Each week two of our designers will go head to head.
00:46And whichever designer loses helps the winner build the garden.
00:56Turning garden dreams, open your eyes, that's so overwhelmed, into reality.
01:04That is amazing.
01:10Today the team are taking on a garden that's seen better days in Luton.
01:16I'm Lois.
01:18I'm Dorian.
01:19I'm Avra.
01:20I'm Simi.
01:21And this is Nyla.
01:23We've lived in this house for about eight months.
01:25Oh, that's very juicy.
01:27Family started to expand, or continued to expand, and we just felt we needed more space.
01:31Very much a dream home, very much a forever home for us.
01:34It's got a lot of things that we can do to it, and the garden is huge, lots of space for the kids.
01:40This is our garden.
01:42At the moment, bits are quite overgrown.
01:45It's a little bit wild.
01:47Before they moved in, Lois and Dorian's garden had been left unkempt for years.
01:52It feels quite disorganised, a bit chaotic, and not functional.
01:57They have a half-acre plot made of separate areas, including a now overgrown formal lawn, and an allotment space with an old greenhouse and established trees.
02:08The garden no longer reflects its famous past life.
02:12It was celebrated on Gardener's World, along with previous owner, Dana Johnson.
02:18It's thirsty and hungry, like my family.
02:22This garden has a huge kind of history.
02:25The previous owner, Dana, had won Southeast Gardener of the Year.
02:29We've seen videos and we've seen pictures of it in its heyday, and it was absolutely meticulous.
02:33Like, the grass looked like carpet. Everything was just picture perfect.
02:37So, it's a real puzzle, and I don't really know where to start with it.
02:41So, I find it daunting.
02:43I wouldn't call it daunting.
02:44I think it's inspirational.
02:45I think just recognising what it was.
02:51So, these are our three apple trees, which look like about five or six, because they're so massively overgrown.
02:56And they've grown up, they've grown out, they've grown down.
02:59They've grown on this side.
03:00So, these used to be like allotment beds.
03:05There used to be a lot of fruit and vegetable growing here.
03:07But as you can see, everything's just massively overgrown at the moment.
03:10There's these metal bits that are kind of really sharp and sticking out, and they're really unsafe.
03:16So, I worry about the kids kind of coming into this area and playing.
03:20Just going through to the next section.
03:26So, this is our greenhouse, and we've repaired the glass, but we're still not using it.
03:34It's still not perfectly functional.
03:36The gutter's a bit broken, and inside, as you can see, there's not much there.
03:40Concentrating on the old allotment area of Lois and Dorian's garden are Chris and Charlie.
03:52There's Lois and Dorian and their little kiddies.
03:55So, that's the garden.
03:56Whoa, it's quite big, actually, isn't it?
03:58Yeah, it's got a lovely layout to it.
04:00I can't believe it was featured on Gardener's World in the 80s.
04:03I was still at school then.
04:04I wasn't even born.
04:05I am going off you.
04:07It's not Gardener's World ready now, is it?
04:10I mean, it's been a long time since it's been touched, and I think it could look beautiful.
04:15So, there's some lovely fruit trees.
04:17Yeah, there are some nice trees, but look at the rest of it.
04:20The fence is falling down.
04:21The greenhouse is smashed.
04:22I mean, it needs a lot of love.
04:24A lot of TLC, I have to say.
04:27Right.
04:28Let's see what Lois and Dorian want, then.
04:30Yeah, let's find out.
04:32So, what we'd love from this garden is to restore it to its former glory and just honour
04:36what was once here.
04:37I'm so pleased that they don't want modern, clean-cut, because I was thinking,
04:41what do you do with that space?
04:43Yeah, there's a lot going on in that garden and a lot of existing trees to work with,
04:46so that wouldn't be difficult.
04:47Yeah.
04:48But make it eco-friendly and child-friendly, family-friendly as well.
04:52I think it's really important to try and get the sort of allotment area to show the kids,
04:58you know, where food comes from.
05:00Oh, well, that's nice.
05:01All veg and fruit.
05:03I know.
05:04I think it's important that, you know, the kids learn about ecosystem and so that the
05:08plants attract pollinators to help pollinate the plants and make the fruits grow.
05:14Exactly.
05:15And what I really love is that it's all about teaching the kids where their food comes from.
05:18Yeah, fantastic.
05:19One other thing that I would really love in this space is a place to relax,
05:23something that also fits with the wider garden.
05:26So, what's the budget?
05:28I'm not going to like this, Charlie.
05:30It's really tight.
05:31It's only 4K.
05:324,000 pounds.
05:33It's a big garden and there's a lot to do.
05:35I think it's all about focusing those pennies in the right areas so we can deliver the food
05:40to teach the kids where it's come from, a nice seating area, and then work with that existing garden.
05:44Woo-wee!
05:45To get the most for their 4,000 pound budget, Charlie and Chris will be focusing their design
05:58on the old allotment area in Dorian and Lois' garden.
06:02The couple must pick the one they prefer and the losing designer must help the winner build
06:08it, along with an expert team of landscapers who provide their labour for free, which leaves
06:14the full budget for materials.
06:21Back in Luton, Lois and Dorian have received the designer's pitches.
06:27Lois, Dorian, what a fantastic garden you've got.
06:32I can see why you want to renovate it.
06:36Faded glory, but I want to rejuvenate it and give you a space that's great for the family,
06:42great for wildlife and also produces lots of yummy things.
06:47I like the sound of that.
06:48Me too.
06:50We want to restore this garden to its former glory, but you're also a family, you have young children
06:55and children and you need a space where you can all come together.
06:58Yes.
07:00I want to do this patio area here as well to pick up some of the paving and mix it up with
07:06some reclaimed slabs and maybe some bricks and some stone.
07:11And then we've got this simple pergola that runs up and over the paving that frames a view
07:17down the garden for growing climbers.
07:20We've got grapevine where you can use the leaves, you can use the fruit.
07:25That's a good idea.
07:27Charlie's design encloses the family with a pergola, climbing plants and patio in the centre of the new allotment space.
07:36Whilst Chris has created a different central point.
07:38Now this is going to be the main family social space and I'm going to do that by reclaiming what was a former bed
07:46but it's now going to become paving with gravel around the edges and these beautiful round posts
07:50with rope swags hanging between them, which will be great for climbers.
07:54Really nice idea.
07:55Yeah, never seen that before.
07:57This is where we go from the social zone into the more productive zone.
08:01This part here I think is going to be really fun for the kids.
08:04I wanted to give them their very own raised beds but I wanted to make them a vertical growing archway
08:11where they can have beans and gourds and squashes growing up over this.
08:15And what's great about it is that you can actually walk around them but you can also walk underneath it
08:20and see the plants growing overhead.
08:22I think it's a really cool design idea.
08:24The kids would love to see that.
08:26And I wanted to create an area that's a bit magical for the children.
08:31So we've got this raised bed here, sleeper high, and we're going to mound the soil up
08:37and create these two seating areas with these sections of tree trunks as a pathway through.
08:44Oh that's quite interesting.
08:46I think the kids would love like jumping and leaping on those logs.
08:50We're going to have a seat made from recycled materials.
08:54Bug hotel.
08:56And then we've got meadow.
08:58So when you're sat on the bench you'll be surrounded by all these meadow plants and flowers.
09:04But also a great space for your children to plant some bulbs and get involved with gardening.
09:10That will be very cool.
09:12Making their new patch a perfect place for the children is important to Lois and Dorian.
09:18As is bringing the old greenhouse back to life.
09:23Further down to the end of the garden.
09:25I know it was really important for you to get that greenhouse back up and running.
09:29What I'd like to do is get you some new things in there so you can actually start growing again.
09:34Get you growing vertically as well.
09:36But I've got a few sneaky ideas for that so leave it with me.
09:39I wonder what that's going to be.
09:41And what I want to do is revamp that greenhouse.
09:44A great space for growing things, bringing on seedlings and also for growing things that might need a little bit more heat and protection at the beginning of the year.
09:55So if you want to grow sweet potatoes and chilli plants and tomatoes then they'll need that protection to get them going.
10:03That would be great.
10:04Definitely.
10:05I think this is going to be a huge transformation for this space.
10:08And I think it's going to be something you'll really enjoy together as a family.
10:12I'd love to see this one built.
10:14Wow.
10:16Lots of things to think about.
10:17Definitely.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Really cool design.
10:20Not what I could have imagined or pictured at all.
10:22So I'm hoping you like my design.
10:24There's a little bit of everything for everyone.
10:27Lots of recycling.
10:29Lots of fruit and veg.
10:31But also a nice place to explore and sit out as a family.
10:36Wow.
10:37That's amazing.
10:38That's quite a good one.
10:39They're so different.
10:40Yeah.
10:41It's going to be tough to choose between them.
10:43So I really love both of the designs actually.
10:44Yeah.
10:45They're both really nice.
10:46But I'll start with Charlie's design.
10:47I mean what I really love is just the different heights and how she's played with the landscape.
10:49Yeah.
10:50I like the idea of you know.
10:51The kid zone.
10:52The mixed space.
10:53The kid zone.
10:54Yeah.
10:55I love the bug hotel.
10:56I think the kids will really enjoy that.
10:57Chris's design is really great.
10:58I love the nice open social space area that he's put in there and the vertical growing area just outside the greenhouse.
11:04I really like this patio area.
11:05So Nyla can you see all the trees?
11:06Wow.
11:07What do you like here?
11:08Do you like all the trees?
11:09Do you like all the trees?
11:10This is so awesome.
11:11This is so awesome.
11:12It's really beautiful.
11:13It's lovely too.
11:14It's lovely.
11:15It's lovely.
11:16It's lovely.
11:17It's lovely too.
11:18It's lovely.
11:19It's lovely too.
11:20It's lovely too.
11:21It's lovely.
11:22It's lovely too.
11:23It's lovely.
11:24It's lovely.
11:25I don't know they're just both so different. Yeah, they both smashed the brief
11:38Right Lois and Dorian have come back to us with a result. So we see who's on it then go on
11:44Hi Chris hi Charlie
11:46First of all, thank you both so much for such a great design
11:50I'll start with Chris's design
11:51You know, I really loved your ideas about the social space and how you'd make that sort of work for our family and Charlie
11:57What we loved about your design was this idea of using reclaimed materials to add texture and variation to the flooring
12:03Well, we had to use reclaimed materials to make the budget go further
12:08We like a bit of that. Yeah, we had a really difficult decision both designs were absolutely fantastic
12:13And they really considered kind of both of what we wanted of needs as a family, but on balance we decided to go with
12:21Charlie
12:28We really like the openness and the flow and that we can kind of just walk through and navigate really easily through the garden
12:34So overall we're really really happy with this design
12:36Chris, oh my
12:38Go to I think we've got a bit of a challenge on here. Yeah
12:43Need your help because it's gonna be a slog. Yeah
12:51With just two days to rescue the forgotten allotment part of Lois and Dorian's garden
12:57Project manager Ben and an elite team of landscapers are on route to Luton
13:02We have a bit of a wilderness here
13:08We've got a strip it all back and we've got to create this garden for Lois and Dorian
13:13First thing we need to do. Let's get the digger in. Hopefully it goes through the archway
13:19We're gonna strip back from the greenhouse work backwards get everything in the skip and then we start putting
13:25Charlie's plan to action. So let's crack on with it. Yeah, let's get it done
13:32Using a micro digger ideal for tight access
13:36Bottom track bottom track
13:41How excited
13:43Andy's first job is to clear a weed-ridden top layer of turf in the old allotment area
13:49So on this night starting to clear the area
13:52We're trying to keep as much as we can so we can reuse it and still keep it in the garden
13:57This soil once we sit through it. It will be reused as a soil is beautiful
14:06The team is striving to recycle as much as they can
14:14These paths running through the gardens are all
14:16These paths running through the gardens are all coming up and I've pulled them up and it's beautiful old gritstone
14:25Quite a soft rock quite a porous rock. You can cut it. Well, you can carve it. Well
14:32And it looks beautiful. So definitely use those
14:36Charlie's design for this space puts reclaimed materials front and center from buried paving to disregarded wood
14:44You've got some lovely stuff here Ben where you had all this from beautiful. Yeah
14:50Locally to me, I have a saw mills, but you get all these beautiful off cuts
14:54They can't sell them, but they're perfect for Charlie's garden here. Yeah, and it comes with its own wildlife
14:59It does yeah bug hotel fitted already. Here we go last one
15:03Amazing thank you the off cuts will be used to encourage wildlife to areas of the garden
15:11While Lee's got more woodwork to create in the form of framing for a raised patio close to the garden entrance
15:22Lee's cutting the sleepers so we create the right angles we have Andy putting the membrane down so we can create the base ready for the paving to go in
15:32Once the sleepers are placed and fixed the team put a membrane in and whack the gravel ready for a new patio
15:42Look at these Lee
15:44You're on to the floor right didn't you?
15:50Lee focuses on the woodwork for the raised beds that'll be positioned in front of the greenhouse
15:56Now you get off well, it's going to the other now last one of the the ones for down the bottom of the garden so okay
16:02We'll get these in then we can concentrate on this
16:05Framework that we've got to build the arts. Yeah, we're nearly ready for you in there if that's okay
16:09Yeah, yeah ten minutes mate and I'll be done before the framework can be placed the patio needs putting down
16:15So if you're paving up to timber never pave right up to it so it's touching because timber can swell in the winter shrink in the summer
16:34It will move your slabs, so leave a 10 mil gap and
16:38It allows it to move
16:40Using a mix of stones to create texture in this family space a pergola will sit across the paving to house climbers and planting
16:55Right so this is the beginning of the the archway we're putting in so I'll get this in place
17:00So at least I'm not going to hold Andy up when he comes to start cutting around it
17:03Bang on hey
17:10Just going to screw it to the sleepers
17:15And then I'll put some concrete in the hole and get it firmed in properly
17:20With the patio pergola posts and raised beds ready today has been hot and hard work for the landscapers
17:27Hopefully they'll have cooled down by the time Charlie and Chris arrive in the morning
17:34Well Chris
17:38This one's going to be a bit different for us
17:41I think it's going to be very different for us Charlie
17:43This garden really really has grown
17:46Yeah, we're going to be trying to just create a little oasis a little patio with all these mature plants round it a little space and then
17:55Lois and Dorian can slowly progress with the rest of the garden
17:59Well, it sounds lovely, but sometimes all those mature plants you say that
18:03There's a challenge love challenge love I
18:09Said it was going to be a challenge. Wow. I mean it must have been an absolutely beautiful garden
18:15But the guys have done an amazing job from what it was. It was so forgotten about wasn't it this little corner
18:21Yeah, and I mean reusing all those materials, which is great. We love that
18:27Lots of work to do so I'd love you to get on the pergola
18:31Yeah, I'm gonna go and check out the wildlife zone and the veg. Yeah, okay. All right. I'll have a think about the pergola
18:39Good luck now when you move into a new house and it's all overgrown people panic and think
18:45Just get a digger in rip everything out
18:48Don't do that live with the garden for at least a year and okay
18:53Maybe prune things back a bit and do a bit of weeding, but you will discover things in the garden some terrible things
19:00Perennial weeds to get on top of that
19:03It's going to be digging out the weeds maybe put carpet over the top to suppress the weeds and leave it for a good year
19:10And it'll get rid of those perennial weeds
19:12But on the flip side you're going to discover wonderful things like these lovely mature apple trees
19:18We've got jasmine and a clematis and then we've got Sicilian
19:23Honey garlic here, which is a bulb
19:25So if you've got a digger in just scraped all the soil off
19:28You don't know whether there's bulbs in there or not because they might not be in growth so live with the garden
19:34Mark things and then also living with the garden you discover how you actually use the garden
19:41Charlie's design combines new ideas with old materials and mature plants
19:46Charlie's taking on the apple tree pruning
19:48So when you come to pruning things and cutting things back cut to a joint just above the joint
19:57And it cuts through nice and easily if you've got bits of wood that are thicker so this sort of thickness
20:03You would use a loppers
20:06So that you can cut them off easily like that
20:11Oh, sorry
20:14No, I'm all right
20:19Below the newly pruned apple tree and he's worked out a design to bring new life to the thick stones unearthed yesterday
20:27This is looking beautiful
20:29We're getting there aren't we?
20:30And this is all from the path still
20:32These are all bits what I pulled out this whole path yeah
20:35Beautiful this one next?
20:37Yeah, I think if you paint him up I'll get some cement in
20:40Chris is helping lee with a pergola roof designed to encourage climbers
20:49Now lee has made this beautiful chunky pergola for charlie to go over the seating area
20:54And what I really like about it is because it's getting nestled into all this mature planting
20:59It looks like something that is meant to be there and has been there for a long time, but now we've got the challenge
21:05of lifting this beast up don't we
21:08Watch out here we go
21:13The long and chunky roof will also create dappled sunlight across the center of the patio
21:19I actually can't see from here can you see that it's only just about bang on
21:32Beautiful could do I can do me monkey bars on it will you tell me off I'll tell you off I'll have a mad dad moment
21:40With the pergola roof in place there is more woodwork that needs installing
21:49The team move on to the frames for raised beds that charlie wants placed in front of lois and dorian's greenhouse
21:56Okay, and obviously we're going to want to level these up
21:59Yeah level this one up now what i'm thinking now so if that's there so that's going to be the raised bed then we've got the path
22:05Yeah, we got to get the other one in up there then we're going to have a screen across here to screen that yeah
22:13Grow runner beans up it or whatever lovely and then depending on height
22:17We could put a piece of timber across there and it'll be a nice little
22:20Bench it'll be perfect. Yeah, right height
22:24Charlie's design keeps lois and dorian's children in mind with another seating area by the raised patio
22:30So lee's back at his workbench ready to create two bespoke seats
22:37So what are you thinking then i'm thinking making two
22:41Little seats so cute like that different sizes cool and we could set them at different heights. Yeah, because the kids are different heights
22:51So a low one and a high one
23:00Lee is crafting square seats from reclaimed offcuts using long timber planks as back rests
23:12Charlie's unique seating area will create an inspiring space for lois and dorian's three children
23:20Now this is my turn to get a little bit artistic i'm going to use these gorgeous bits of
23:26Gnarly logs to act as a collar around some plants and it will just stop the meadow turf from swamping the plants
23:35And it just looks arty and this course is great for bugs and things because you've got this old rotten wood in the center
23:45These wood offcuts create a rustic path
23:48Does that look sort of levelish todd
24:00Whoo that's posh lovely so that's the one that's a job
24:07Now we're at quite a fun bit of this section of the garden it's time to get the slats on and the whole idea with
24:22These is that it's just going to screen the greenhouse behind because this is more of a working end of the garden
24:27Whereas this is more about ornamentals of fun and a beautiful space for the family to enjoy
24:33And this is something that's really easy for anybody to replicate at home because all it is a couple of posts
24:40Some nice planed rounded off band and then we're going to repeat them all the way up the posts
24:45And just use a little spacer as we go so this is something that anybody can do
24:49All right, come on. Let's start getting these in
25:05Looking good looking good
25:07So this area is coming together now so this is all about wildlife and insects so we're going to have meadow turf
25:19Which is going to be great because you get lots of different butterflies and and moths and things like that
25:25Which will then also help with the pollination and bees the pollination of the veg but great for the children
25:32So seats over there i'm putting in this
25:36Basically this big bucket which is going to be a big bird bath
25:39And then this is going to be a bird table so we found this bit of metal i think it's cast iron it's very heavy
25:46But i want it so i get lee to cut me a hole in there because i want it
25:50So that they can lift it off and scrub it down occasionally that way there's less chance of disease spread in between the birds
25:58Right
26:10To bring the screen and raised bed area together in the growing space chris needs to create a bench seat
26:17So i'm just measuring up and cutting two short bits of sleeper that i'm going to use to form the bench
26:23That goes just under the screen i've just built and this again is really simple construction to be honest
26:29But it's going to give you a really solid chunky bench that's going to last a long time
26:34i'll get these cut and i'll get them in
26:39Chris can install them in the growing space that sold charlie's design to lois and dorian
26:46For me the most the thing i'm looking forward to the most is just growing fresh produce and being able to
26:51not have to buy certain things from the supermarket and actually peel it wash it cook it and yeah
26:56i'm looking forward to that a lot i'm really looking forward to the section for the kids
27:03they can enjoy it and and you know have their own little growing space
27:06Right i'm going to create a bug hotel underneath the seat now it's ideal because the top of the seat keeps the hotel dry
27:17and what you're trying to do is create little gaps and areas for insects to overwinter
27:23lay eggs so that they're insulated and protected from birds from eating them and you can use all sorts of materials
27:31so i've so got some bits of wood these are shingles so you can just stack those i've got some coir so i'm
27:38going to cut that up into strips and put between so you're just creating layers you can slice up canes into all sorts
28:01like a teddy bear
28:13chris is laying meadow turf to encourage more insects and wildlife into the garden
28:18and charlie plans to introduce colorful flowers as well as fruit and veg throughout
28:24wow i knew you knew who it was look at that look at these marigolds companion planting for the vegetables
28:34exactly i mean i know it's a veggie garden you have taken this to the next level what forgot oh
28:40oh sugar snaps sugar snaps we've got carrots you know being a carrot top i've got to have carrots
28:47this is oh and then i thought i'd plant some strawberries in the wildlife area because the birds
28:54will like them but also the children will be there yeah yeah love this
28:59in a not too daunting nod to the former glory of this garden charlie wants to bring vegetables to two
29:12raised beds
29:16now veg beds so apart from sort of edible plants and that i've got fun plants for the children
29:22so we've got some pumpkins which of course they climb so they'll scrabble up over this trellis
29:28we've got some beans that are dark color beans like almost black so we've got lots of different
29:34things that the kids will like to grow as well and that's just really a case of arranging them and
29:41don't forget there are some things like the chives not only can you eat the leaves but you can eat the
29:47flowers as well and they taste of chives so that's a good one and we've got some nasturtiums you can eat
29:54the leaves you can eat the flowers and you can eat the seeds and of course they're a really great
29:59plant for children to grow because they're self seed they're hardy annual and they'll come up year
30:05after year you've just got to look out for for the very distinctive leaves so when you see this the
30:12leaf come up like that you know it's nasturtium tropiolum tropiolum nasturtium tropiolum i thought
30:20that was a place in italy the name comes from the shield that the gladiators used to hold
30:26because they were round weren't they see i knew i was on the right path with the italy reference
30:31yummy peppery tastes like peppery watercress
30:41chris meanwhile is planning the best way to introduce produce to the forgotten greenhouse
30:46that lois and dorian want brought back to life
30:51the greenhouse for me is where all the magic comes together because this is where you can experiment
30:57with your plants and start to grow stuff that might be a little bit more tender a bit more unusual or
31:03even a bit risky now the easy way to get started in a greenhouse everybody knows about them is grow bags
31:11what's good about them is that you can just buy them from the shop chuck them on the floor of the
31:15greenhouse and do exactly what i'm doing here cut a slit in and plant some plants in and then something
31:22else you can do if you're going to grow tomatoes you can either get them quite small plant them in
31:28the grow bag and let them grow up from there but sometimes what you can do is grow your tomato in a
31:35bigger pot cut the bottom off like this and then plant that into your grow bag so it's going to get
31:41that extra root space all the nutrients from the grow bag and then you'll have loads of delicious
31:47tomatoes and the other good thing about tomatoes is when you walk into a greenhouse and you've got
31:51all these tall tomato plants you get that amazing smell and a very hot ripe tomato is the best kind of
32:07uh
32:13i promised dorian and lois a grapevine in actual fact i've given them three grapevines so you can now buy
32:22at garden centers a pot of grapevines there's three different ones in there there's a green grape
32:29a red grape and a black grape now i'm just tying it in but i have to say once they get going you don't
32:35need to because they have these tendrils that self-twine so you might need to sort of tie the
32:41odd branch in but needless to say grapevines they like a nice sunny spot which is absolutely ideal
32:48here but it'll just give some dappled shade over the patio and it sort of just says that
32:55oh look at that I feel like I'm on holiday because of the grapevine
33:05one of my favorite things to grow in a greenhouse is chilies but what's great is they need this
33:15warmer climate and in this greenhouse it's in the perfect location because it gets the morning
33:20Sun there there's a tree casting a bit of shade at midday and then you get the evening Sun so they
33:24are gonna love it in here and the kids can also grow other fun plants like big squashes that will
33:30grow up and hang over and even melons and because we're a little bit further south down here and
33:35we're getting some really good Sun you might just get a nice big ripe melon in this greenhouse but
33:42further up north might be a little more difficult oh just made a very simple straightforward arch out of
33:59some hazel branches good thing about hazel branches is they won't root down if you use willow you've
34:06then got a very big willow tree because it will root down but hazels often used for growing beans up
34:12runner beans but I'm going to be planting this honeysuckle this one's Lannicera Henry of course it
34:21will scrabble up these hazel poles but also up into the tree and you'll have that gorgeous scent that will
34:27waft over so it flowers from about June time through until August great for the insects and I'm just
34:36planting it in this just makes it look very mature the other thing I'm going to plant in this area is
34:41a few fruit bushes so when the children are sat here in the sunshine they can just pluck a few berries
34:47off while they're sat watching time go by
34:50that's not nice doesn't it
35:04that could be nice in that gap by the pergola
35:23yeah yeah yeah yeah great idea
35:30now this is hydrangea paniculata pink lady and I love paniculata hydrangeas because you get these big
35:50panicle shaped flowers that's when they're in this big cone and the best thing about hydrangeas is that
35:57you can get a hydrangea for every spot in the garden so just because you've got one type don't
36:04think oh no I shouldn't have any more hydrangeas I think you should get more because you can have
36:08hydrangeas for shade hydrangeas for a sunnier spot hydrangeas that are big leaved and furry you can get
36:15hydrangeas for everywhere with plants and fresh produce in place the raised patio beds and pergola
36:31are settled and Charlie has created a bird bath to encourage more wildlife the team have worked hard
36:40to bring this forgotten garden back to life in just two days oh just testing out your seat you look
36:50very comfy there it's lovely nice back to it I know it's good isn't it you know we were a bit
36:56daunted by all this maturity weren't we but actually I think that now is what makes the garden as well yeah
37:01yeah yeah just finishes it off and they're gonna have so many vegetables slightly over planted but
37:07hey-ho it's fun it's experimenting you know and then they'll be in there with the kids growing
37:14cucumbers and melons melons oh yeah lots of different things yeah yeah well do you think it's time to go
37:24and get them I think so come on come on when the team arrived this once award-winning allotment posted
37:34nothing but bare grass weeds and mature trees that were well past their prime but with a four thousand
37:47pound budget it's been transformed into a modern family-friendly space with new features and nods to
37:54its former glory I'm just going to get you here what will Lois and Dorian think of their new garden
38:03Lois Dorian you inherited a beautiful garden with lots and lots of mature plants
38:11you want your children to learn about wildlife grow vegetables and have a space that you can use as a
38:19family do you want to open your eyes oh my gosh wow this is amazing yeah I love this right
38:30I've done a fantastic job like honestly I like this little sun sunflower we actually dug that up
38:36so it's an old circular patio so this is beautiful so glad they noticed all the bits of paving because
38:45it's tying the new garden in with the history of the old so we've added a bit more height to the garden
38:51with this pergola so yeah so that would give you a little bit of interest in shade we've got grapevine
38:56so it's because the kids love great oh well that's good then so yeah shall we wander down to the produce
39:05here yes please I just love this yeah can you see yourself sat out here as a family where Lois
39:16and Dorian's greenhouse was once rubble strewn and barren it's now ready for growing produce for
39:26the entire family so Chris has been busy on the greenhouse wow transformation got some tomatoes in
39:39there we got a chili plant we've got some cucumbers and there's a watermelon as well so you're going to
39:48be using them a hundred percent I need that watermelon and yeah chili I am very much looking
39:56forward to all the produce I'm gonna have yeah right so wander up to the next bit of produce even
40:03this looks amazing the area in front of the greenhouse was a waste of land overrun by invasive weeds and grass
40:14it's now a screen seating area with various produce planted in two raised beds surrounding a bench
40:22built from sleepers giving you a nice little bench seat to sit on screened off the greenhouse which
40:29will also shade it but we got peas we got pumpkins courgettes lettuce parsley all of that but each year you can
40:40change and you can grow from seed so you can grow what you want absolutely it's just incredible this
40:46is going to give them such an opportunity to grow together as a family and then we get to the children's
40:52area come and have a look I don't know if it's going to be the kids area anymore I did wonder about that
40:58the area at the entrance to the old garden that was an uneven and bare patch of grass is now a child
41:07friendly wildlife zone with a gnarly wood path bespoke seats with bug hotels underneath and wild
41:14meadow turf to attract pollinators and fascinate the children so much character when you've got
41:20vegetables and that having wildlife that you get attract butterflies and bees and everything like
41:25that it helps with the pollination this is very magical I just I can't believe you've done this it's
41:32just incredible that you can create this with just your hands like it's just it's incredible isn't it
41:37so lee has been really busy making these bespoke seats for the children of them kids us i don't know
41:46i think mom and dad are going to be bags in those and send the children down there to play
41:51get them to a little plastic chair to put them on there on the side
41:55and the bug hotel underneath the seat
41:58do you know what's incredible i just love especially those strawberries that they always
42:01seem to be growing out of the crack do you think it was worth it 100 okay yes i have like
42:07it's just it's just incredible what you've managed to achieve in such a short period of time
42:12i have to say it wasn't just me it's the landscapers and chris
42:17i've got to clap for you and the team this is a team clap i don't usually give this it's just phenomenal
42:23thank you both so so much the kids are just going to be so excited i cannot wait to see
42:27their reactions so shall we get them out then here they come
42:32mommy i dress monkey bars
42:35the team have worked hard to create a creative and productive family space in luton
42:42what can you see over there lois dorian and the children now have the perfect spot to grow
42:47play and be inspired by when i open my eyes i just couldn't believe the transformation like
42:54it's really incredible how they you know just kept you know a lot of the original character of the
43:00garden and kind of blended new elements and weaved it into it seeing it in real life and kind of walking
43:06around and breathing it and living it it's just absolutely amazing so for me it wins all the awards
43:25so
