00:00Meanwhile, a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia this morning,

00:07causing widespread damage to buildings, vehicle shops, and hospitals.

00:11According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake is one of the 10 strongest to ever hit Russia

00:17and the most powerful in the region since 1952.

00:21The massive tremor prompted tsunami warnings in Japan, Hawaii, and other parts of the Pacific.

00:26Meanwhile, flooding also affected over 2,000 residents in Russia's far east coast.

00:32Authorities now have a declared state of emergency in the northern Kuril Islands, where evacuations are underway.
