Anna Azallion breaks down different tsunami alerts, when they occur and what each alert means.
Transcript
00:00Well, any kind of weather alerts can be confusing, and especially if you've never been through any sort of tsunami alerts before.
00:06So let's break down what all of them are and what they mean.
00:09So first of all, the lowest end of the spectrum here is not even an official alert.
00:14It's an information statement the National Weather Service puts out or the Tsunami Warning Center.
00:19And you don't actually need to take any action at that point, but just kind of be aware.
00:24Next up, we have a tsunami watch.
00:25This means the tsunami is distant, but it's possible for your location.
00:30So make sure you are staying alert and you're ready to act if that's needed.
00:34Then we have tsunami advisories.
00:36Many of these have been issued over the last 24 hours here.
00:39This is when you need to start to take action.
00:41You want to stay out of water, away from the coast, stay off the beach.
00:44This means strong currents and waves are near the shore.
00:47Then we have the warning.
00:48This means the tsunami is on the way.
00:50You will see coastal flooding and strong currents all possible.
00:54So that's when you want to move to higher ground or go inland sooner rather than later.
00:59So let's talk a little bit more about what to do during a tsunami.
01:03So we talked about that official warning and you want to take action immediately.
01:08Make sure that you are following any updates from local news sources, from local officials
01:12about what you should be doing.
01:14And you want to move quickly, again, sooner rather than later.
01:18Now, there's also natural warnings.
01:19This is when maybe you feel an earthquake and you're near water.
01:22You want to act very quickly before an official warning is even issued just to be on the safe
01:29side.
01:29Drop cover and hold on if that earthquake is still ongoing and the shaking is too strong.
01:34Then we have the aftermath.
01:36You want to stay away from those hazard zones until officials say it is safe again.
01:41It's OK to go back.
01:43Stay out of damaged buildings.
01:44A lot of this is kind of common sense.
01:46Just use your intuition here to stay safe after a tsunami.
01:50Tell me it's actually very Arabic.
02:04As soon as I read it on the set, it is to be done with it by 때, by taking away from the
02:06manageable time they can show up to death or to death.
