Hawaii beachgoers evacuate amid tsunami warnings

Residents and beachgoers in Hawaii have been ordered to stay away from the beaches and move to higher ground and away from coastal areas as authorities warned of tsunami triggered by the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday (July 30). 00:08All the land guards will be leaving at 5 p.m.

00:11Even the police evacuated at 5 p.m.

00:42As the mayor indicated, our number one priority is to get people to safety.

00:46And so right now, it's an easy thing.

00:49Get away from the beaches, get inland, and get upward.

00:52So that's our message right now.

00:54I would also tell you that we are working hard with all of the city agencies

00:59and other stakeholders to make sure that we are activating the tsunami assembly areas around the Oahu.

01:06And we want everyone to, if you do live in an area that's within a tsunami area,

01:12first and foremost, go to a friend's house, go to a neighbor's house, go to your workplace.

01:18But go inward and upward out of the tsunami area.

01:22We ask you to stay calm, cooperate, and get to high ground, if at all possible, where you are.

01:27We promise to give you complete updates.

01:30Right now, the expected time of anything that might happen here in Oahu is going to be somewhere around 715.

01:36We're expecting it to be at Kauai around 710.

01:40We'll know.

01:41We've been told by Civil Defense that when it passes the island of Midway, we'll get a good read as to what we can expect.

01:47And that's not scheduled to happen for a while yet.

01:50But we promise to keep you updated.

01:52We would not be doing this if this wasn't most serious at this point in time.

01:56So please take this very seriously.

01:58And don't go down to the beach.

02:02Don't be looking at waves.

02:04Get yourself as high as you possibly can.
