Scott Brown, Station Manager at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, gives an update on the waste facility fire at Lean Quarry, Horningtops, near Liskeard
Transcript
00:00So, yeah, where we're at now is we've got a structure, obviously, that you'll see within the shop that is structurally unsafe.
00:07That's been sort of assessed by a structural engineer.
00:10So until we can make that structure safe, it's not possible to basically put staff, either contractors or our own fire and rescue service personnel, into that environment.
00:22It is an irrespirable atmosphere as well currently.
00:24No surprise, there's a huge fire that's still burning in there.
00:27Whilst it's in a controlled burn phase, it's still creating, obviously, quite a fire.
00:33So until we can get that structure disassembled or until contractors can get that structure disassembled, we can't actually access that site safely.
00:41Once we are in a position to do that, then we'll be able to get better access and start to work with contractors and work with the site management to pull that stack apart and make a further attack on that fire.
00:52The warning, the warning form that's been done right from the outset is basically to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed where possible.
01:01Obviously, we've preached at the time of year that it is that we are obviously in our warmer months, and I know that is an inconvenience.
01:07But for peace of mind and for that just additional safety is to keep windows and doors closed.
01:13If any people do have vulnerabilities around respiratory conditions, so COPD, asthma, then by all means, they would need to seek maybe the support and advice from their GPs or by calling 111.
01:25We've gone to some of the sites or some houses that are within half a mile of the site, we've conducted some air quality monitoring, very, very, very low levels.
01:35We're going to expect some form of readings of certain things, certain gases, but low levels, nothing of any concern.
01:44We continue to monitor those and report those to the UK HSA, obviously taking their scientific advice and our actions around the warning form of keeping the windows and doors closed
01:54remains the best course of action at this time.
