00:00Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all the latest goings-on at Brighton, Hove Albion and Crawley Town.
00:06I'm Matt Poul, and this week I'm joined by Brighton writers Darren Howard and Henry Bryan, as well as first-time guests Ron Alderman, who's been keeping an eye on all things Crawley Town in Mark Dunford's absence.
00:15There have been a number of departures of Brighton this week, including a popular player who featured heavily in Albion's Fairytale Europa League campaign, while Crawley Town have been busy gearing up for their first competitive game in League Two.
00:26This week, we'll look at who has bid their farewell to Albion since the last pod, bring you news of a major injury blow to a Brighton defender, and bring you all the latest from Crawley Town ahead of their season opener at Grimsby Town on Saturday.
00:38You can read all the stories we are talking about in videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport.
00:44And we will start, as ever, at Brighton and Hove Albion, where full-back purposes Du Pignan has completed a £17m move to Italian giants AC Milan.
00:51The 27-year-old defender joined the Seagulls in July 2022, making 104 appearances and scoring five goals.
00:59We've seemed to have been talking about Les Dupinian's departure a lot this summer, Darren, so I can't imagine there's been much of a surprise to his departure.
01:06But what has the reaction been amongst the AM supporters and what do you make of the transfer in general?
01:13Yeah, I think the supporters appreciated that he was a very good player for the club.
01:18He joined, as you say, in 2022.
01:21He came in as a replacement for Mark Cucurea when he made his, you know, he was about 10 months of Brighton and then made a £60m move to Chelsea.
01:31And Estupinian came in for £15m from Villarreal.
01:36And the first thoughts were, you know, he's actually, he might even be better than Cucurea.
01:42We've got a really good deal here. And especially when Cucurea was struggling in his initial period at Chelsea, Estupinian was performing consistently well for Brighton as well.
01:52And it was like, blimey, here we go again. Brighton have, you know, have done it again.
01:58But obviously Cucurea came good for Chelsea. He's performed, you know, very high level for them for the past season or so.
02:07And Estupinian has as well, to be honest. So I think overall, he's been a really good signing for Brighton.
02:14And what I enjoyed most of all watching him for the past seasons was his link up with Matoma down that left hand side.
02:21I thought Estupinian and Matoma is a real high quality, you know, combination between the two of them.
02:28And they really helped each other well, both in terms of defence and attack.
02:33And I think that's what they've got to now rebuild.
02:35They've got De Kuyper coming in, who's a Belgium international.
02:38They signed from Club Bruges for about £16m.
02:41And that's the combination now that they need to get working on.
02:44It looks as like Matoma will stay this summer, I say tentatively.
02:49I think he'll probably stay. I hope he stays.
02:52And then if he does, he'll hope to build that similar relationship with the Kuiper that he had with Estupinian.
02:58But I think he gave a nice message on social media to the fans.
03:02It was quite a heartfelt message that he posted on Instagram saying that, you know, Brighton will, you know, like the players do.
03:11And I think he'll be quite popular, always be quite popular with the fans.
03:15He gave his all for the club during his time there.
03:19And a good transfer for him, decent fee for Brighton.
03:23And hopefully the replacement, De Kuyper, will do just as well.
03:27Although they have Jack Inshilwood and Ferdi Cadioglu, who can also have very strong options at left back as well.
03:33Yeah, absolutely.
03:34And quickly talking about Matoma, do you think the Louis Diaz to Bayern deals kind of killed any notion that Matoma might leave the summer?
03:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was always the link, wasn't it?
03:44The Bayern were, they had a few players on their radar and perhaps Matoma was just sort of a run down from.
03:49So Diaz was perhaps one of their main targets and Matoma may have been underneath that.
03:55So Brighton fans will be keeping everything crossed that, yes, that is the case.
04:00Yeah.
04:00Yeah, fingers crossed.
04:02We're sticking with departures.
04:03And as we mentioned last week, forward Everett Ferguson has left the Seagull to join Roma on a season-long loan.
04:08And it looks like he's having an absolutely fantastic time already.
04:11How has Ferguson been getting on at Roma since his move, Henry?
04:14He's a man on fire by the looks of things.
04:16Yeah, well, he hit the ground running, didn't he?
04:19With his new club scoring four times in a training ground success over a Serie D opposition.
04:23And then most recently, he marked his first proper appearance for his new club Roma by scoring the only goal of the game in a pre-season friendly.
04:32And I'm going to definitely butcher this name, but over Kaiser Slaughton in Germany.
04:37Yeah, it's looking really good.
04:40It's looking really good for him.
04:41He's scoring in packed out stadiums and he's clearly been given a lot of time and is respected with the new Roma manager as well.
04:50Well, he's loving it so far and it's great to see the confidence he's regaining and long may that continue.
04:57And only time will tell, I guess, if he'll be able to make it in Serie A.
05:01It's definitely a different game.
05:02And as we mentioned sort of last week, maybe the fact that he's got more of a physical presence,
05:06he can hold the ball up, might help him out in the Italian league.
05:10But yeah, only time will tell.
05:13The fan scene behind him, I mean, when he first even just got through the airport at Roma,
05:18all of the fans singing his name, celebrating.
05:21And even their, I think it's their third kit, quite Irish inspired.
05:25So he's got a welcome, hasn't he?
05:27I mean, I've not seen anyone have that much of a welcome in terms of being a young Irish prospect.
05:34And yeah, time will tell if Brighton are going to be, you know, regretting that for 40 million buyout clause.
05:42That might be too generous.
05:43We'll see.
05:43We'll find out.
05:44But it's great to see that he's enjoying his football and we'll see how he gets on.
05:49Yeah, couldn't agree more.
05:51Continuing with the theme, Darren, and Brighton's seen a number of fringe players exit the club on permanent and loan deal since last podcast.
05:57Who has left the club permanently and who has made loan meals?
05:59And are there any players you're sad or surprised to see leave?
06:03Yeah, it's been a busy, busy summer.
06:06It's probably worth doing a sort of a brief recap, really, on everyone who's left.
06:11So we've got Jao Pedro, obviously the main one, to Chelsea, 60 million.
06:15Simon Edinger, to Sunderland, he went for 2021.
06:19Purposes Sibignan, who we talked about, AC Milan.
06:23Valentin Barco, he went to Strasbourg for around about 10 million.
06:27He was on loan there last season and made that permanent.
06:30They are the permanent outs at the moment.
06:32And then we have, obviously, Evan Ferguson, who went to Roma.
06:37Oh, sorry, Kel Sherpin, he was a permanent out as well.
06:40He went to Union SG and Ophire as well, who went to Preston.
06:46The rest of them alone, so Evan Ferguson, Ibrahim Osman, he went to Orcs Air.
06:51Erin Cashin, to Birmingham.
06:53James Beadle, also to Birmingham as well.
06:56Carl Rushworth, to Coventry.
06:59Amara Koza-Dubri, to Bolton.
07:02And Du Young-Hun, who went to Excelsior, in Rotterdam, Excelsior.
07:07So they've conducted quite a bit of business already.
07:11And then pending, you've probably got Igor Julio.
07:16He's supposed to be going to Real Sociedad, although that's reports from Spanish media
07:20are saying that interest has cooled slightly on that one.
07:24Julio and CISO is expected to leave, but he's struggling with a knee injury at the moment.
07:28So any transfer, this window may have been scuppered because of that.
07:32He's expected to be back in two or three months, maybe.
07:36Jeremy Salmiento, he'll likely leave as well.
07:39And also Facundo Boniotti, he's probably the one.
07:45I'm a bit torn on that one.
07:47For me, it's between him and Brian Gruda.
07:52And they play in similar positions, both playmakers.
07:56And it's who they see has got the most potential on those.
07:59Boniotti has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund for £20 million.
08:03But, yeah, I'm sort of keen to see what Brighton do on that one.
08:10Nothing's been confirmed.
08:11But in terms of sort of sad to see leave, not really.
08:19It's Evan Ferguson, maybe.
08:21He's the one I was a bit torn on.
08:22But I guess it sort of shows the faith that they still have in Welbeck and the two new Greek lads as well who came in.
08:30But, yeah, time will tell if that decision is right or not, really.
08:34Absolutely.
08:35And it just goes to show how cold-hired you are, Darren, I think.
08:38Meanwhile, Brighton defender Adam Webster is set to miss a large part of the season, sorry, and will undergo knee surgery.
08:50That's according to Brighton boss Fabian Hatzella.
08:52The 30-year-old picked up the knee ligament injury during the Seagulls' pre-season training camp in Marbella.
08:58It's absolutely gutting for Webster, isn't it, Henry?
09:00Doesn't seem to have much luck at the moment, does he?
09:02How big of a blow will his absence be to the team?
09:04Or do you think that they're well-stacked at the moment in terms of central defenders?
09:09Well, it's a gutter from an Albion's fan's point of view.
09:12He was quite key last season, sort of stepping in when there's been injuries in the back line.
09:17He's been quite versatile.
09:19He made 14 appearances for Brighton, 11 starts, three sub-appearances.
09:23And, yeah, his last appearance was that final game against Tottenham Hotspur.
09:28And then when we got that news on Instagram, he said that he's absolutely devastated to be posting.
09:34But, unfortunately, he's going to be out of action for quite some time.
09:37And he can't explain how incredible and unbelievable the group of players at Brighton and the staff have been since it happened.
09:44So it makes you think that maybe this happened right at the start of the pre-season go-ins on there.
09:50He said he'll be back stronger.
09:51But he knows that he's got a long road ahead.
09:54And he'll be behind the boys as much as he can.
09:56So, yeah, we wish him a speedy recovery there.
10:04But in terms of new recruits, and maybe not trying to be as cynical as Darren there,
10:08but I think Diego Coppola might be pushed into that first team mix fully a little sooner than planned.
10:15Maybe he would have come on as a substitute maybe in the first few games.
10:20But he's been really solid in pre-season, Coppola.
10:23And I think he's basically a like-for-like replacement.
10:27The key issue is that Webster has been very, very key in terms of Premier League experience.
10:33And I know that he might still be in the dressing room while he's recovering.
10:37But having that solid bit of backup there, I think, is important,
10:41especially when you see a few of the other defenders sort of leaving the club.
10:45Lewis Dunk, as well, is not getting any younger and his form has dipped recently.
10:50I feel like Webster had a better season than Dunk last season.
10:53So, yeah, it'll be a big blow.
10:56But hopefully he comes back stronger than ever and Coppola is able to perform and get straight into it.
11:02But it is that risk, isn't it, as we saw with new recruits last season.
11:06It's very hard to tell whether they'll be able to adjust to the Premier League straight away.
11:11Yeah, absolutely.
11:12We'll watch that space.
11:13Albion made it four wins from four pre-season friendlies.
11:17They beat Coventry City 2-0 in Lansing on Saturday afternoon.
11:21Darren, there's another behind-closed-doors friendly.
11:23Who grabbed the goals for the Seagulls and what were the main takeaways from that one?
11:27Yeah, it was another victory for Brighton.
11:30They've won all of their pre-season games so far.
11:35So, Yasin Ayari, he got his second goal of pre-season,
11:38and linked well with Matt O'Reilly again, who's looked pretty brightly pre-season.
11:44He played very well against Las Palmas.
11:46And he was, from what I saw, he was very lively against Coventry as well.
11:51So, yeah, Ayari opened the scoring.
11:53And then Sima scored Abdullah Sima, who's linked to Norwich this week, actually.
11:59Linked to Norwich City.
12:01He got the second goal.
12:03But it was a solid performance again.
12:05And you never quite know how they're going to go.
12:08Obviously, the championship sides start a couple of weeks or a week before the Premier League team.
12:14So, they might be a little bit further along in their preparations.
12:17And they'll be keen to, you know, sort of beat a Premier League team, albeit in pre-season.
12:22So, I think, yeah, a decent performance from Brighton.
12:26The concerns were there were a few people watching from the sidelines.
12:30There was no Carlos Belieber.
12:32Danny Welbeck was also watching from the sidelines.
12:35And Olivier Boscagli as well, who's another centre-back that joined in the summer.
12:43They were both, they were all described as having minor injuries and are hoping to be back in a couple of weeks.
12:47So, yeah, obviously, without Webster there as well.
12:51So, that's maybe a concern in the centre-back areas, particularly as they let Erin Cashin go away on loan to Birmingham.
12:59And whether that has an impact on Igor Julio's situation as well with Webster's injury is one to keep an eye on.
13:08But in terms of pre-season, all good for Brighton in terms of results.
13:13They've got Southampton this weekend at St Mary's.
13:15They've got their final tune-up game against Wolfsburg at the Amex on August the 9th.
13:21And then the serious action gets underway August the 16th against Fulham.
13:26Yes, it does indeed.
13:27And you've mentioned that pre-season game against Southampton there, Derren.
13:30The Seagulls travelled to Southampton for their penultimate pre-season friendly this Saturday.
13:35How strong do you think Albion are going to go, Henry?
13:37And I think, do you reckon this is going to be their toughest pre-season game so far?
13:41Yeah, I think so.
13:44They've got a point to prove.
13:45And they've also got that new manager, Will, still.
13:48He's an interesting one.
13:49He's the same age as Fabian Herzler, 32 years old.
13:53And there was a lot of sort of news around him, a bit of virality around him,
13:57because he has been inspired by football manager at the age of 17 to go from playing to coaching.
14:05And that was sort of the real factor, playing those sort of football manager games.
14:09So he's a really interesting manager and he's got a lot to prove.
14:12They haven't had the best pre-season so far, Southampton.
14:16They had a narrow 2-1 win over Eastleigh, where they used some of their younger players.
14:20A draw to Castellon, who play in La Liga 2.
14:24And then a 2-1 loss to La Liga outfit, Espanyol.
14:27But as we were mentioning, I think, yeah, these last two games are going to be the biggest tests for Albion.
14:34Southampton are going to be looking to bounce back straight into the Premier League.
14:38And they've done a bit of spending.
14:40They've done a bit of spending, as we've seen.
14:42So we'll see.
14:43And I wonder if Adingra will get a chance at all in terms of...
14:48Oh, no, sorry, that's Sunderland.
14:50My fault there.
14:51Yeah, my fault.
14:52I've got that confused.
14:53Forget that bit.
14:54Yeah, forget that bit.
14:56Forget that bit.
14:57But, no, it'll be interesting to see how they do.
14:59I think, yeah, these last two games will be the strongest Albion sides we've seen.
15:05And hopefully, Carlos Beliba will be making an appearance in that one.
15:09I would like to see Kari Matoma as well in that and see how he's performing.
15:15And it's a very good sign for Brighton, having won all of their pre-season games.
15:20And hopefully, that can continue into these last two and they can have a good start to the Premier League campaign.
15:26Yes, absolutely.
15:27Did you say both managers were 32, Henry?
15:30Yes.
15:31What's the point?
15:32What's the point in anything?
15:34No, it's ridiculous.
15:35Yes, it is ridiculous.
15:36Right, with all things to get to, Maudlin, we're going to take a look at the latest goings-on at Crawley Town, who wrapped up their pre-season friendly itinerary last week.
15:43A star-studded Crystal Palace side made the trip to Broadfield Stadium on Friday evening with Eberechi Eza, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daniel Munoz, named for the Eagles in a 3-0 win.
15:53Ron, firstly, thank you for joining us.
15:56It sounded like a great occasion at the Broadfield.
15:58What did you make of the red performance against the FA Cup holders and which Crawley players stood out to you?
16:02Yeah, I thought it was a really good game, despite going behind after 90 seconds to Mateta after a defensive mistake.
16:11But, you know, once they found their feet a little bit, they played really well.
16:17I know they lost 3-0, but there was passages in the game where they had good possession, kept hold of the ball well.
16:26Carl Scott looks a really good player for Crawley this season.
16:29I think he'll be a big positive for the team.
16:33Harvey Davis as well looked quite good in goal, although there were three goals.
16:38There's nothing to do with any of the goals, really.
16:41But he looked good with the ball at his feet as part of the back three.
16:44You know, it gives them that extra option to play the ball out of.
16:47And I just think that, you know, Charlie Barker come on quite well after that defensive mistake to let the goal in.
16:52He took over quite well when Dion came off early in the second half.
16:56What was Red's boss Scott Lindsay's assessment of that game, Ron?
17:00Reading the post-match interview, did he seem like there were quite a few positives he took from that one?
17:05Yeah, I mean, there's quite a few positives from that game.
17:07Seven players got a full 90 minutes, which he was looking forward to, looking to get in.
17:12And one of those seven was Jay Williams, who hadn't actually had a full 90 minutes since February.
17:17So it was about six months he hadn't played a full 90-minute game.
17:20So that gives them a bit of confidence going into the season that he can last 90.
17:26Also playing in front of the crowd.
17:28They hadn't done that much this season.
17:29Although they played three bridges in East Brinstead with a slight crowd.
17:34And there was over 5,000 fans there on Friday night to watch the game.
17:38So it gives them a proper league game feel, which is something they've not had so far this season.
17:43Obviously, disappointing reports off being cancelled due to the weather.
17:47But that would have been a similar sort of thing for them.
17:49So they've only had one game behind in front of fans, really.
17:53Absolutely.
17:53Croytown also donned their new third kit against Palace.
17:56And it's safe to say the kit is split opinion somewhat.
17:59The new shirt has a predominantly black design with a red and white trim and features an alternative crest to the usual club's emblem.
18:06Inspired by the club's nickname, the new one-off crest features a devil's pitch walk with the abbreviation CTFC underneath.
18:12I've seen the kit run and I actually think it looks quite nice.
18:16But what do you make of the kit?
18:17And what's the fan reaction been on social media?
18:20I've seen lots of, shall we say, strong opinions about the third kit.
18:24Yeah, there has been.
18:25I actually quite like it.
18:26I think it's really nice.
18:27I don't normally buy football kits, but that would be one that I'll be looking to get hold of.
18:33But I can see why people don't like it.
18:35The badge doesn't fit with the other two strips.
18:40It's just, like you say, it's just a pitchfork.
18:42It doesn't match the actual logo of the club.
18:46But some of the comments are saying they like the black kit, but the badge is awful.
18:50I've had people see it looks cheap.
18:52It's absolutely atrocious, someone put.
18:54But, I mean, I don't quite get that.
18:57I quite like the idea of it.
18:59I think it's obviously something different.
19:01I mean, I think the club has said that they're looking to possibly use that as a branding tool.
19:06So they're looking to go down that route at some point.
19:08But I don't think they'll change the badge just yet.
19:11People don't like change, do they?
19:12No, no, they don't.
19:15Meanwhile, it was announced last week that Liam Fraser was signed for Reading following his contract expiration at Crawley Town.
19:20The 26-year-old Canadian international moved to the Broadfield Stadium in January and quickly became a fan's favourite with some impressive performances.
19:27But the Reds failed to negotiate a new contract with Fraser and he has now signed for the Royals.
19:32What do you make of his departure on?
19:33I guess it wasn't too much of a surprise considering his contract was up in the air.
19:37Are you sad to see him go?
19:38And how big of a miss do you think he'll be?
19:40They've recruited quite well in midfield, haven't they?
19:43So maybe he won't be too much of a miss?
19:45Yeah, I mean, it could be a big miss.
19:48But as you say, Carl Scott looks pretty good and looks a similar sort of player to that anyway.
19:53Yeah, sad to see him go.
19:55But as you say, with Jeremy Kelly going as well in the summer, his contract was up.
20:00So perhaps I expected Liam Fraser to go back home.
20:04That's a sign for Reading.
20:05I think he's still a good, he's definitely a League One player, without a doubt.
20:09And so it's a good move for him.
20:11I wish him all the best.
20:12But certainly from what I saw on Friday, the first time we saw Carl Scott,
20:16he can certainly fill that gap that we're missing.
20:19Yeah, absolutely.
20:20Carl Scott does look like a very exciting player.
20:22And as we've mentioned at the top of the podcast,
20:24this Saturday brings the moment all Reds fans have been waiting for.
20:27The first game of the 2025-26 League Two campaign.
20:30Crawley opened their new season at Grimsby,
20:32who finished ninth last season in League Two.
20:34First, Ron, how excited are you to get the new season underway?
20:37And second, how do you think the Reds will get on at Blundale Park?
20:40And who are the Grimsby danger men we should all be looking out for?
20:44I'm really looking forward to the start of the season, to be honest.
20:48Yeah, it should be quite a good season for you.
20:51They've got a tough start with Grimsby away.
20:54As you said, they finished ninth, two spots outside the playoffs.
20:57But they lost in their last five games last season.
21:01So that's why they missed out on the playoffs at that point.
21:04Players to watch at Grimsby?
21:06I mean, they've got the former Chelsea player, George McCarron.
21:09Yeah.
21:10He looks quite a good player.
21:12He's a former Chelsea's England Under-17 World Cup winner as well.
21:16Zach Gillison, six years at Blackburn.
21:19Also signs for players at Barca, Youth and Liverpool.
21:24So he looks quite a handy little player.
21:26They've got their play-up for three.
21:29Jamie Walker, their forward, who played at Hearts.
21:31240 games, two spells at Hearts with 54 goals.
21:36So, yeah, they've certainly got a lot of firepower and decent players.
21:41Jason Daddy Svan Thorsen, Icelandic International, as well, plays for them.
21:47So they've got quite a few good players.
21:50It'll be certainly a tough start with Crawley.
21:53They've got three away games this season, as well as the start of the season.
21:59Absolutely.
21:59And we'll get your score prediction later on.
22:01But finally, Ron, how do you think Crawley will get on in League Two this season?
22:04I know that we've spoken to Scott Lindsay before,
22:06and he sort of downplayed the idea of an instant return.
22:09But looking at the squad, do you think playoffs might be a realistic aim,
22:12or do you think that they will return to League One at the first time of asking?
22:15Absolutely, playoffs are there for them.
22:20The squad we've got, I think Scott knows how to get the best out of players.
22:24I don't quite know how he does it, but he does.
22:29A lot of people I've seen have had us struggling.
22:33I mean, I saw one earlier today that had us being relegated.
22:36I don't think that's going to...
22:38There's no chance of that happening.
22:4128-1 to win the league.
22:43I think that's a bit out of the question.
22:44I don't think we're going to win it.
22:45Promotion, maybe.
22:47I mean, I've seen six for one on us being promoted,
22:49so I quite like that idea.
22:52But yeah, I certainly think playoffs should be the minimum
22:55that Crawley fans will probably expect this year.
22:58Yeah, absolutely.
22:58It's all shaping up for an exciting season.
23:01And for the first time this season,
23:02we will do our score predictions,
23:03where we predict just the one game this week.
23:06It's Crimsby against Crawley, as we've mentioned.
23:09Starting with you, Ron.
23:10How do you reckon it's going to pan out at Blundell Park?
23:12A good start to the season for the Reds?
23:15Yeah, I think we'll probably...
23:16Could probably sneak a 1-0 win.
23:19It's going to be a very tough game.
23:21Grimsby, as I said,
23:22Grimsby do have players that are very good,
23:25just since you know it's on the pass,
23:27so they'll win a good start.
23:28So I think it'll be a close, tight game,
23:29but I think we'll win 1-0.
23:31Yeah, absolutely.
23:32Darren, how do you reckon things will pan out?
23:34Grimsby, you're on mute.
23:39Sorry, Matt.
23:40I'm going to go with a 2-2, I think.
23:42I didn't realise,
23:43just going from what Ron was saying
23:45about the Grimsby players,
23:46they look a strong outfit.
23:49But yeah, I think Crawley would be keen
23:52to get a good start under Scott Lindsay again.
23:54And yeah, I'll go for an entertaining 2-2.
23:57And finally, Henry, what do you reckon?
23:59How do you reckon Crawley are going to get on?
24:01Yeah, I think that they'll have a good show
24:03and they'll be playing their same football
24:06that we're used to under Scott Lindsay
24:08that got them into the, you know,
24:10the playoffs in the first place a few seasons ago.
24:13I think that it will be a 1-0 draw, though,
24:15Crawley to get the first goal, play well,
24:18and then maybe come unstuck a little bit
24:20in those last few minutes of the game.
24:22But I think it'll be a good performance for Crawley
24:24and, yeah, a good start to the season.
24:28We can only hope.
24:29Well, brilliant.
