00:00Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all
00:05the latest goings-on at Brighton, Hove Abbey and Crawley Town. I'm Matt Palt, and as ever,
00:09I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard, Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford, as well
00:13as Sam Morwan, who covers both Abbey and the Reds. Brighton were held to a golden straw
00:17at home by newly-promoted Ipswich in the Premier League on Saturday, but successfully advanced
00:21in the Carabao Cup in midweek. We'll pick over the bones of Abbey's 3-2 Carabao Cup
00:26third-round victory against Gary O'Neill's Wolves at the Amex Stadium last night, plus
00:30we'll bring you all the latest from Crawley Town. You can read all the stories we're talking
00:34about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport, and you can check out
00:39other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview channel 262. You may also be watching on later
00:44TV, so thank you very much for tuning in. First, we will start with the Carabao Cup
00:49game, and Sam, you were at the game last night, and how was it, and did Fabian Hazala's men
00:54deserve to progress to the next round?
00:56Yeah, it was a good game, actually. It was an entertaining one for the neutral, and Brighton
01:00started really strongly. Carlos Baleba scored a belt-up of a goal, really. It was the first
01:07goal for the club, and he put in such a brilliant performance against Ipswich, and the question
01:11was, could he follow that up with another good performance a few days later, and he
01:15absolutely did, and he was full of confidence, and you could tell from the way that he pressed
01:20up the pitch, won the ball back really well, and then just unleashed a screamer into the
01:25bottom corner of the gate to keep a no chance. So it was a really good goal, and a nice way
01:29to celebrate as well, because he went off doing some backflips, bringing back memories
01:32of Le Roy as well for Brighton. We don't often see celebrations like that in English football
01:38these days, so that was really good to see. And Simon Odinga as well scored a really nice
01:43goal to double the lead for Brighton in the first half, and it was all very comfortable
01:49and looked like it was going to be a simple evening for them, but they did make life a
01:54bit difficult for themselves in the end, really. They conceded a goal right on the stroke of
01:58half-time through Guedes, who was a bit of a threat actually for Wolves in that first
02:02half. He did a couple of near-misses before he did find the net, and it wasn't the best
02:07of defending from Brighton, and Hazard wasn't too pleased with that moment, really. He said
02:12they played really well for 44 minutes, but it's a goal they should never concede, because
02:15it's another transitional moment and a lazy transition reaction. It's something they can't
02:20accept, and it's against the identity of Brighton, and they have to learn from these moments
02:23quickly because they can't do this, and we made a silly mistake. So it was a key moment
02:28because that goal on the stroke of half-time gave Wolves a bit of confidence, and they
02:31came out the better team in the second half, really, and really did put Brighton's defence
02:35under a lot of pressure. But they held firm, and really the key turning point was when
02:41Jack Hinshaw had pulled out an incredible goal-line clearance. It looked like it was
02:45going to be an Adam Webster-owned goal, but Hinshaw really did come to the rescue. It was a
02:49brilliant piece of improvisation to preserve the lead for Brighton, and Hazard made some
02:55changes in that second half, brought on Danny Welbeck for Evan Ferguson, Mats Huyfer came
03:00on, Kadioglu came on, and it was a Turkish international that got his first goal for the
03:05club to seal the win, really. Danny Welbeck had a shot that was saved after a brilliant
03:10bit of skill from Odingra to control the ball, bring it forward. Welbeck had the shot saved,
03:15and then Kadioglu was there to put it into an empty net. And Jadon Steele nearly cost
03:22Brighton once again with a terrible pass, I should say, that was intercepted, and Wolves
03:28made it 3-2 in injury time. But thankfully, Brighton were able to hold on and seal the 3-2 win.
03:33Absolutely, and it was a much-changed line-up, wasn't it, Darren, from the draw against Ipswich.
03:37Who impressed, and were there any players who perhaps didn't state their claim for more football?
03:43Yeah, well, it was a good chance for some of the fringe players to really make their mark on the
03:48team and convince Herzegovina that they should be in contention for the Premier League matches.
03:55Just to follow up on what Sam said about Jason Steele, I think if there was any doubt who is
04:01you know, probably the number one now, I'd say Bart Verbruggen. He's been playing in the Premier
04:07League this season, and I think he is ahead of Steele, who has been very good. He's been an
04:14experienced goalkeeper, very consistent. He's been consistent over the years, but he is sort of like,
04:23you know, as Sam said, liable to these pass-backs when they try and play out from the back. So,
04:29I think Verbruggen is definitely nailed on. I like Hinshelwood as well. Hinshelwood played
04:34again. I think he's been excellent so far this season, playing in a variety of positions,
04:39left-back, right-back, and he can also obviously play in midfield. But I think the main one for me,
04:45Jacob Moda, he played quite well alongside Carlos Bolivar in the midfield. But I think
04:53Simon is inglorious as well. I think he just showed again that he gives value for money. He's
05:00always capable of delivering that pass, producing these moments of magic, and he's ruthless in front
05:06of goal when he gets the opportunity. And I think there's a case for him to start ahead of Jankuba
05:11Minta, who maybe, you know, he was lauded in pre-season, looked absolutely electric in pre-season,
05:18started very well against Everton, made that goal for Karim Matouma on the opening day of the
05:24season. But he's just, he's still a threat, but he's not quite delivering at the right time. He's
05:30not picking the right pass. He looks a little bit indecisive, doesn't he? I noticed against
05:33him, he looks a little bit indecisive about what he's going to do. He's one of those players,
05:37I don't think he knows what he's going to do when he gets the ball, really. He seems a little bit
05:40unhurried a little bit. But yeah, he's definitely a talent.
05:43Absolutely. He's, you know, I've seen some criticism of him on social media,
05:49and it seems pretty harsh, like how some people are just quick to write off these players already.
05:55But he's a genuine talent. He's so good. He's so electric and a danger to the fullbacks. But
06:00I think Ipswich played him quite well. Both the fullbacks played well against Matouma and Minta
06:05for Ipswich last Saturday. And it's just having that little bit of guile, that little bit of skill
06:12to pick the right pass at the right time. And Matouma's got it. And as yet, I don't know if
06:18Minta has, he's got to prove that he can, you know, deal with these tight defences. And I think
06:23at the moment, Odinga just looks that little bit more. He's going to give that extra bit of skill,
06:28that extra goal or, you know, that extra goal threat. So, yeah, I think Odinga has definitely
06:33staked his claim in that match last night. It's funny you should mention digging players
06:38out. I think it was after the Ipswich game where Brighton fans were slagging off Roota
06:41and he's played one game. You're not giving players a chance to just give your head a
06:45wobble when you're doing stuff like that. There's no time to impress yet. Very strange. Sam,
06:52Nottingham Forest up next to the Amex. Both teams have had a decent start to the season. Forest
06:57arrive off the back of beating Liverpool, while Brighton remain unbeaten from their four matches
07:01so far. What can we expect from this early season, almost top of the table clash? Yeah,
07:07it's a really unusual situation, really. I don't think you expect Nottingham Forest to have had
07:12the start to the season they've had. They've almost gone a little bit under the radar until
07:16they got that superb win over Liverpool. You really kind of step up and notice they've not
07:21lost this season. They obviously had the opening day draw against Bournemouth and they followed
07:28that up with a win against Southampton. Then they drew against Wolves and then they beat Liverpool.
07:34So it's been a really solid start to the season for them. Nuno Espirito Santo has really got them
07:39playing some decent stuff and to win at Anfield in the way they did. It's a bit like a snatch and
07:45grab, but it was a kind of a perfect performance, really, kind of tactically set up really well.
07:49And obviously, Nick's that goal. It was a really good goal, actually, from Caleb Hunt and Ndoye.
07:53So he's one for Brighton to watch out for. But I think it should be a really good game. Obviously,
07:58Brighton have got that home advantage and will be looking to get the win and make amends for
08:02that goalless draw against Ipswich, which I'm sure they'll be disappointed about. And they'll
08:06be looking to make up for that with a win this Sunday. If you look at the stats, they're very
08:12even in a lot of elements this season. Obviously, you mentioned that Brighton are sixth, just above
08:16Forrest and seventh, but both on eight points. So it's just gone down on to goals scored,
08:23which is currently in favour of Brighton. Brighton have scored six and Forrest have scored four.
08:26But apart from that, they've both conceded two goals. They've both had quite a number of shots
08:31this season. Brighton have had 44 shots, Forrest have had 42. So it's a good match-up, really,
08:38between two sides that are obviously full of confidence. And I'm looking forward to seeing
08:42how they get on. When you actually look forward to the previous meetings, they've both won 12
08:48and drawn eight from 32 games. So there's a lot of evenly matched elements to this game. So yeah,
08:54it should be a good one. Something's got to give, isn't it, Sam? And in terms of plays,
09:00how are they looking? Where are they walking? Any set to return or any updates?
09:06I expect Jal Pedro to come back for this one. He was rested again in the Carabao Cup against
09:13Wolves in midweek. He didn't play against Ipswich because he was on international duty,
09:17had that long flight back, and they said that he had a sort of slight knock. But I just think
09:24they didn't want to risk him so quickly. But I do expect him to come back against Nottingham
09:31Forest. I think he'll probably come in for Rutter, who started up front against Ipswich.
09:37I think Brian Gruder, the German 25 million summer signing, haven't seen him yet. He hasn't
09:43featured at all. He's still a little way away, I think. He's got an unspecified injury, they keep
09:50calling it. They haven't divulged it. I think he arrived with a knock and he's continuing his
09:56rehab. But I think the Forest game is going to come too soon for him. But he's one to keep an
10:01eye on. So I think he's going to be a very useful addition once he's sort of fit and firing. Great
10:07to see Evan Ferguson, as Sam mentioned. He got some minutes against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.
10:11It's his first start for six months or so, I think, since his lengthy foot injury that
10:17he sustained last season. So he adds another option. So alongside Pedro, Welbeck, Rutter,
10:23you've also got Ferguson who can come on as well. So I don't think he'll start against Forest. But
10:29I think he'll certainly be in the matchday squad. Matt Swiffer, he's back. He sustained an injury
10:35against Everton on the first game of the season. So he got some minutes last night. So he could be
10:40in contention for that midfield role. But I'll be surprised if he starts. I think Bolivar and
10:46Yassin Ayari will continue in the central midfield roles. James Milner, he's still out
10:51with a hamstring injury. He picked up against Arsenal. I think he's a couple of weeks away as
10:56yet. And the other one, left-back Pervis Estupinan, he featured against Wolves as well. So
11:03he could be making his first Premier League start this season in place of Jack Kinchelwood at left
11:09back. But apart from that, Brighton haven't got many people out. Apart from that, they're good to
11:18go. They're good to go. I'll take a deep breath now. Excellent stuff. Thank you very much for that,
11:24chaps. We're going to take a quick break. And when we return, we're going to talk all things
11:28Crawley Town. Crawley substitute Armando Quintana converted a second-half penalty to die
11:34a fourth win in five league games in a 1-1 draw at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday.
11:39Louis Barry put a cameo head on six minutes, but the turner kept his call from the spot as the Reds
11:44ended a run of two successive League One defeats. Sum that Crawley performance up for us, please,
11:49Sam. It seemed like a positive result by all accounts. Yeah, it was. It was a really good
11:54performance, actually, and one that Crawley probably could have won on another day. I think
11:59obviously Stockport came into the game knowing that they could go to the top of the table
12:03with a win. But they started really well, Stockport. They scored a cracking goal for
12:08Louis Barry, who quite clearly is not a League One player. He's obviously on loan from Aston Villa,
12:12and he could do a job in the Premier League, to be honest. He's a real quality player. It was a
12:18lovely goal to open the scoring. So I don't think there's much Crawley could have done about that.
12:23Maybe a little bit. They may be giving a little bit too much space, but I think it was just a
12:27quality goal. You had to kind of credit the Stockport player there, really. But Crawley did
12:33respond really well, actually, and they dominated the ball for large parts of the game. But the
12:38turning point really came when Armando Quaterna came on. It was around the 60th minute. But Scott
12:45Lindsay actually revealed he shouldn't take credit for the substitute because he said it was a free
12:49kick that Crawley rewarded, and his coaching staff said, bring Armando on because he's obviously a
12:54good free kick taker. The free kick went straight into the wall, came back to him, and he kind of
12:59went on a nice run down the right flank, and he was brought down to the box. It was literally a
13:03minute after he came on, and he'd won a penalty for his team. And then he stepped up himself to
13:07slot it home. So it was a really good impact from him, and it was a really deserved goal for Crawley.
13:15It was unfortunate he didn't score, obviously, earlier in the game and give himself even more
13:18time to find that winner. But they still had plenty of time. There's about 25 minutes left
13:21of the game to find that winner. They couldn't quite create that chance to get the goal, but
13:26they were the team that were looking the most likely. They've done all the attacking.
13:29And Scott Lindsay said after the game how proud he was of his team, really. They went toe-to-toe
13:33with a really quality side and looked like the most likely winners. He just said he's a little
13:38bit disappointed about the lack of chances and the lack of that final ball, really. They couldn't
13:44quite find that ball in those key moments. But yeah, a decent point, really, and a really good
13:49performance. I think there's lots to be positive about.
13:53Talking of Lindsay, Mark, news just in, sort of. MK Donovan has sacked their manager,
13:59and surprise, surprise...
14:00They haven't sacked him. They haven't sacked him. He's gone to Carlisle.
14:03He's gone to Carlisle. I do apologise. But either way, the point still stands that he has once
14:08again, Scott Lindsay, been linked with another job. What's your view on that?
14:12Yeah, yeah. Sorry. Reading a couple of headlines, he went before he was pushed,
14:16so he wasn't far from getting it, because they haven't had a good start to the season, MK Don's.
14:21But yeah, we said it at the beginning of the season. Every time a job comes up,
14:26League One, League Two, lower half of the Championship, Scott Lindsay's name's going
14:30to be connected. And all it takes is a couple of people to put bets on, and the betting companies
14:35have got Scott Lindsay as favourite. This one is slightly different, because he's three-to-one
14:39favourite, and Stephen Schumacher's the next one. We're 12-to-one, so there's quite a big gap
14:43between him and the next one, kind of thing. So either a load of people are putting on bets,
14:48or somebody knows something that we don't. But he is going to be connected with it. I mean,
14:53it's an attractive job. The stadium, they've got apparently a good squad, although they haven't
14:58had a great start to the season. But you speak to Lindsay every time, and his love for Crawley
15:04Town is clear. He absolutely loves the club. And his focus is going to be on the club. I mean,
15:10if MK Don's approached him, who knows what happens? But it's a step down for him. He's
15:15obviously got a great project here at Crawley. But a chance to link up with Liam Kelly again,
15:21Lawrence Maguire. I can imagine it's a temptation, especially with that stadium as well.
15:27But yeah, no, it's an interesting one. But I think, again, it's just early betting odds,
15:32just people putting on money. Crawley fans, don't panic, just share, is my message to you.
15:38And we will bring you all the latest developments on sussexworld.co.uk forward slash 4,
15:42won't we Mark? Absolutely. Going back to Saturday, Bradley Ibrahim made his Reds debut.
15:48As you all well know, the former Arsenal midfielder has joined Crawley on a season-long
15:51loan from German club Hertha Berlin. How did he get on, Sam? And how did Scott Lindsay view his
15:55performance? Yeah, I thought he looked really good. He came on in the 66th minute in place of
16:01Jay Williams, who, surprise, surprise, had been booked. And Lindsay said that was a key reason
16:08why he had to make the change, really, because he actually admitted he was worried Williams was
16:12going to get himself sent off. He said that and he wanted to bring him off to avoid that situation.
16:18Brought on Ibrahim and he looked really good, actually, really composed and calm on the ball.
16:23And Lindsay said post-match that he was impressed as well. He looked assured,
16:27putting a couple of strong tackles, looked calm, good on the ball, made some good passes.
16:31And he's really pleased with that. And he was pleased with the impact of all the substitutes,
16:35really. As we mentioned, Armando came on and was the difference-maker in the game.
16:40But yeah, I think he really did look good, Ibrahim, actually. And some signs that he could
16:46make a name for himself at Crawley and look forward to seeing more from him, really. I think
16:49he hopefully will have a start soon so he can see what he can do from minute one. Yeah, early signs
16:54are positive. I think he's a good little loan signing for Crawley, I think. And former Reds
17:00stopper Corey Adai was between the sticks for Stockport on Saturday. The 26-year-old moved to
17:05the Hatters in the summer after helping Crawley reach the League Two playoff final and helping
17:10them to promotion. And how was he received at the Broadfield Stadium, Sam? Hopefully,
17:13he got a good reception. And did Scott Lindsay manage to catch up with his old goalkeeper?
17:18Well, so the last we heard from Lindsay was in his press conference after the match about it.
17:24And I asked about Corey Adai because he did get a really nice reception, actually, at the end of
17:28the game from the Crawley fans, which is really nice to see. Because at the end of the day, he's a
17:32club hero. He was part of that team and got promoted. And he was such a key part of it as
17:36well. I think when he first joined Crawley, there was a lot of stick that he got from mistakes that
17:40he made. And it didn't seem like he was going to be a first choice keeper for Crawley for the long
17:46term. But he really did turn things around. And the improvement that he showed in a couple of
17:51seasons that he was at Crawley was incredible, really. And he became such a key part of that
17:55promotion campaign. And yeah, and Scott Lindsay just echoed that, really. He said anyone that's
18:00part of that squad is a kind of a club legend, really. And they're always going to be welcome
18:05at the Broadfield Stadium. And at the time of the press conference, he said he hadn't yet
18:09managed to catch up with him. But he really hoped he was able to speak to him before he left to see
18:14how he was getting on. And yes, it was nice to see him return. And it was quite a funny moment,
18:18obviously, when the penalty came for Corey. And suddenly, you're hoping that Corey Adai doesn't
18:22make the save after hoping that he would make the save for Crawley last season. It was a weird
18:26situation, that. But it was nice to see him return. And nice to see that Lindsay has echoed those
18:32thoughts of the fans that he really is a club legend and always welcome back at Crawley.
18:36Oh, wonderful stuff. Meanwhile, it was announced late on Friday evening that Worthing had signed
18:41Mo Fowle from Crawley for an undisclosed fee. And what made this move so odd is that the striker only
18:46joined the Reds in July. What do you make of the move, Mark? I don't know if you saw, but he
18:51certainly made an instant impact for Worthing in the FA Cup on Saturday. Yeah, he scored the winner
18:56against Haven, didn't he? And that was the second qualifying round, wasn't it, I think? Yes, yeah.
19:01Yeah. So, yeah, no, really good start for Worthing. And obviously, very good. Yeah, it's an odd one
19:06because he only signed on a six-month contract when he signed for Crawley in July. So, it was
19:10only a short-term thing anyway. But it was all just a bit odd, really. He played a little bit
19:16in against Crystal Palace, I think he played against in the pre-season, played a couple of
19:20games, but has never appeared in a squad or anything for the league matches so far. And, yeah,
19:26and then it turned out he was signing. And it's not like it's a loan move, it's a permanent move
19:30to Worthing. So, I'm yet to find out the ins and outs of the deal, but I'm supposed to be speaking
19:35to the owners at some point about a couple of things coming up. And I wanted to find out about
19:42this and what the reasoning was. But, yeah, no, an interesting one. He looks like a decent player,
19:48and obviously Crawley, the only thing Crawley are lacking is a little bit of ruthlessness in front
19:52of goal at the moment. Foul, I don't know if he would have been the answer. It might be a level
19:57too much for him because he played two games for Bolton, I think, a few years back. But then,
20:02otherwise, it's mostly been non-league at Haven and then field teams like that. So, yeah, a bit
20:07of an odd one. But, yeah, I wish him all the best at Worthing. And, yeah, I think Chris Haggart has
20:11got a good signing there. Yeah, he'll score loads of goals at that level. And I suppose the bonus
20:15from this move is the fact that Crawley got a fee for him as well, Mark. Yeah, absolutely.
20:20Absolutely. They've done, yeah, they do done quite well that recently, haven't they, of
20:24bringing players in the team. That's obviously their model and it's worked for them so far. So,
20:28fair play. This Saturday sees the Reds make the long trip to North Wales to take on Wrexham,
20:34who are apparently owned by someone famous. But the Dragons like the Reds were promoted from
20:40League Two last season. Wrexham currently sit top of League One, albeit having played one more game
20:45in second place, Birmingham. The two sides met in midweek and Birmingham ran out winners. How do
20:50you see this one going, Mark? It's, once again, I think we're going to be saying this a lot this
20:53season, another tough trip for Crawley Town. It really is, yeah. I mean, it doesn't get much
20:58tougher, I don't think. This away at Stockport and away at Birmingham are probably the three
21:03that you're sort of fearing this year, as it were. Because last year, Crawley lost to them twice. But
21:08at home, Crawley absolutely battered them. I was there for that game. But they lost 1-0. They were
21:13down to 10 men, Wrexham, early in the second half, I think. And Crawley had so much possession,
21:18etc. But I remember Lindsay saying that they used dark arts to sort of defend their league.
21:26And I think that's the thing about Wrexham. They are a streetwise side. They know how to win games.
21:31I mean, I was looking at the stats of the game because they lost 4-1 away from home.
21:35And Crawley dominated a game. They had 68% possession. But Wrexham won 4-1. And if you've
21:41got all that possession, what's the point if you're not going to score goals? And I think
21:45it's going to be interesting to see how they set up this year with Wrexham top of the league.
21:49Are Wrexham going to be a bit more expansive against Crawley? Or are they going to do the
21:53same thing, be a bit more passive and just look to pounce on mistakes that Crawley made? And that
21:57was what the case was last year. So, yeah, a really tough trip. But you never know. Crawley,
22:03they do surprise you. And they do seem to come up and perform when they're up against it,
22:09against the bigger sides. So, hopefully, they can get something. Again, if they can get a point,
22:13like they did against Stockport on Saturday, I think it'll be seen as a really good result.
22:17And Sam, am I right in thinking that you're making the trip to the deepest,
22:20darkest North Wales this weekend?
22:23No, no, unfortunately not. No, I can't unfortunately make it there this weekend.
22:27Yeah, no, I'm looking forward to seeing how Crawley get on. I think, as Mark has said there,
22:32really, it should be a really good game. I think, obviously, Wrexham have just lost to Birmingham
22:36in that Hollywood ownership clash. So, they'll be looking to bounce back from that.
22:41Why are people saying that? Tom Brady's nothing to do with Hollywood.
22:46Yeah, that's a good point.
22:47People kept saying that. And I was just like, well, he's an American footballer.
22:52Yeah, I suppose.
22:56Yeah, you don't sound too gutted about not going to Wrexham. And quite frankly, Sam,
22:59I don't blame you. But never mind, we might get your chance again in the future.
23:04Finally, as ever, we'll go into score prediction, starting with Brighton against Forest on Sunday.
23:08Deron, how do you see this one going? I've got a feeling that this one might be closer than people
23:12might make it out to be.
23:14I agree. Yeah, I think it will be. I think Forest are a threat going forward. Hudson-Odoi,
23:18Elanga, they've got some great attacking players. I'm going to go for an
23:21entertaining 2-2 this weekend.
23:24Sam, how do you see this one going?
23:27I'm going to go 2-1 Brighton. They'll get the win they need after that draw at Zip Switch here. 2-1.
23:32And Mark, do you see Brighton maintaining their unbeaten record?
23:36I do, but I think I agree with Deron. I think it's going to be a draw. I don't think it's
23:39going to be as exciting as Deron thinks, but I'm going to go for a 1-1.
23:43We'll keep our eyes peeled for that one. And finally, Wrexham against Crawley in League
23:47One on Saturday. Mark, how do you see that one panning out?
23:51I'm going to go with my heart on this one. I'm going to go Crawley to pick up a point.
23:56It's going to be a 1-1 draw.
23:57Oh, you were going to say a win there, weren't you? I could feel the optimism flowing through
24:03you. Sam, how do you think this one is going to go?
24:071-1. I'm going to go optimistic. It would be a great result.
24:11Deron, we need some proper optimism here.
24:13I'm going to go one better. I'm going to go 1-0 to Crawley,
24:17and then Scott Lindsay will move to MK Dons for that next week.
24:24He's going to go out on a high.
24:28Well, that'd be some weekend for Crawley fans if that happens. I don't know how they view that,
24:33but we'll have to wait and see. Thank you very much for this week, chaps. Brilliant as ever.
