00:00The U.S. is planning to destroy contraceptives worth around 10 million dollars that were intended for less developed nations.
00:11The U.S. State Department has confirmed this decision, resulting from President Donald Trump freezing all foreign aid earlier this year.
00:21We are currently in the Belgian city of Hill, located in the province of Antwerp.
00:25Behind me is the warehouse that has been storing U.S.-funded contraceptives for the past months.
00:30The warehouse is not accessible at the moment, but according to a U.S. document from April, these supplies include over 50,000 intrauterine devices,
00:39almost 2 million doses of injectable contraceptives, and over 2 million packets of oral birth control.
00:45U.S. lawmakers are trying to prevent these stocks from being incinerated, but they may not pass the necessary bills in time.
00:53NGOs, the U.N. and the Belgian government are also trying to explore all possible options to save the stocks, but have not succeeded so far.
01:02Today, what it means, the destruction of these contraceptives, is the danger of women everywhere in the world, and especially in Africa, because they were destined to poor countries in Africa.
01:15The French Green Party also sent a letter to Emmanuel Macron and the European Commission requesting that they urge the U.S. to suspend the destruction of the supplies and mediate diplomatic efforts alongside NGOs to ensure these products free their intended recipients.
01:44The Commission has told us that they have taken note of concerns raised and that the EU remains strongly committed to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights.
01:56The EU executive will also continue to monitor the situation closely to find the most effective solutions.
