00:00The national NAPLAN test scores are in and for the third year in a row the results are
00:06dire.
00:07In reading, writing and numeracy, about one third of students aren't meeting expectations
00:13and either were classed as developing skills or are so far behind they need additional
00:17support.
00:19Analysts say it's a reflection of a school system letting down a generation of young
00:22people.
00:23This is a code red for your students' achievement in school.
00:27Children who start behind and underachieve in that plan have little to no chance of achieving
00:33at year level expectations by the time they finish school.
00:37Students from very remote areas struggled the most with about 20% classed as strong or exceeding
00:42expectations in reading, writing and numeracy compared to more than 70% in big city schools.
00:49The National Curriculum Authority remains concerned by the gap between Indigenous students and
00:54their peers as well as those in the bush.
00:56At a national level we need to continue to put our collective attention and collective
01:01action towards supporting those students in regional and remote schools.
01:05There was some good news for Indigenous Australians with a rise in the number of students exceeding
01:10expectations in both writing and numeracy.
01:14Not everyone agrees there's cause for concern.
01:16Some academics believe the test is too narrow and that yearly media reporting of the results
01:21is contributing to the teacher shortage.
01:23Teachers are hearing all of these stories, all of these big challenges, you know, NAP plan's
01:28a disaster and it's damaging their motivation and their morale.
01:34Students should already have their individual results but school by school breakdowns won't be
01:39out until December.
