00:00Three weeks ago, seven novice divers arrived in the Bahamas to challenge their preconceptions and face their fears.
00:20This is insane!
00:24Bloody hell!
00:26Yes, we're on the telly. Yes, we're all celebrities, but it's different this.
00:33Oh, they're coming in fast. Oh, Christ.
00:35I don't have love for the sharks.
00:39I really like my limbs. I want them all.
00:42My feet! Where do I get my feet?
00:45I am living proof of what things like Jaws have done to us. You know, I am terrified of sharks.
00:52They worked as a team and supported each other every step of the way.
00:57Go, go, go!
00:59Come on, Andy!
01:01They're everywhere!
01:05You're fine. You're fine. You're fine. You're fine.
01:07You're fine.
01:08Woo-hoo!
01:09Well, I've just passed my pants.
01:11Yeah!
01:12Woo-hoo!
01:14What is so bonkers about it is the place where I'm starting to finally feel my freedom is the place that I was most scared of all of my life.
01:26Now, with a deeper understanding of just how important sharks are to our oceans.
01:33One of the most magnificent things I've ever seen in my entire life.
01:37I feel like I'm gonna cry.
01:39This is a moment I will never forget.
01:42They're extraordinary creatures and we have to take care of them and we have to watch out for them.
01:47They are about to face the most challenging dive of their lives.
01:53It's getting very real now.
01:55I really want to commit to succeeding in this.
02:04We have come to a decision as to who has the skills necessary to perform this potentially dangerous tiger shark dive.
02:12The celebrity's time in Bimini is coming to an end.
02:25Tomorrow, they will find out if their diving skills have advanced enough to be able to take part in the ultimate experience.
02:32Diving with tiger sharks.
02:34Just got serious, innit?
02:36I have something to share with you.
02:38So, on behalf of Tristan, Paul and I, we wanted to give you something special.
02:43We've made necklaces with the bull shark teeth that were found directly underneath the cage that you went diving in.
02:50They naturally fall out, cycle out new teeth.
02:52So, this is for you to take home.
02:54We're so happy to share this with you and this is a token of your experience.
02:57And remember, they're sharp.
02:59They are still working teeth.
03:01So, go ahead and pick the color.
03:03Thank you so much.
03:06This was not what I expected at all.
03:07I thought possibly I'd wave at a few sharks from afar, maybe go in a cage.
03:12I didn't expect to have such incredible experiences with the shark and, yeah, potentially the tigers if they think I'm up for it.
03:20That's really wonderful, thank you.
03:25It's been a surreal and strange experience to be in the water.
03:30That's a way out of my comfort zone.
03:32And to be with wild animals that could do something horrible to you.
03:36It's a massive achievement.
03:37It's a massive achievement.
03:38So, to be near a tiger shark, if I can do that, I can do pretty much anything.
03:50Morning.
03:51Hello.
03:52Hello.
03:53Hello.
03:54Morning.
03:55Good morning.
03:56Hello.
03:57We meet again.
03:58How are we doing?
03:59Good.
04:00Welcome again to The Briefing Room.
04:02Three weeks ago, many of you came with one singular mission, something in common.
04:06You wanted to learn about sharks.
04:08You also wanted to face your fears head on.
04:11Most of you have hoped that if you worked hard enough, you'd get the chance to dive with one of the most impressive animals on the planet.
04:18The tiger shark.
04:19It's important to remember the dangers associated with what we're going to do with these tiger sharks.
04:26This is a whole different kettle of fish.
04:29It is, after all, one of the most feared predators on the planet.
04:33Everything else, compared to what you're about to do, is going to be like child's play.
04:38And that's no joke.
04:41Lenny, even your hat looks scared.
04:45Three weeks ago, I would have been making jokes about being eaten and losing an arm or a foot or something.
04:50But now I'm thinking the tiger shark might be the thing that is the making of us all.
04:55So let's take a little look at this amazing predator, the tiger shark.
05:02He looks cross.
05:03That face.
05:04Wow.
05:05Even their gills look angry.
05:06Face.
05:07Wow.
05:08Even their gills look angry.
05:10The tiger shark is one of the...
05:14The tiger shark is one of the largest sharks in the ocean, reaching up to 20 feet in length and weighing up to 900 kilos.
05:22A powerful, often unpredictable apex predator named for its distinctive stripes.
05:28And they pretty much feed on everything and anything.
05:32They have a massive mouth.
05:35So, a small oven could essentially fit into one of these massive tiger shark's mouths.
05:42Their teeth have like a pointed curved cusp at the top, and then it comes down to serrations along the side.
05:48So if you imagine that punctures a turtle shell, and then with the power of the jaw,
05:53they're able to then shear through that turtle shell and rip through it.
05:57That bird!
05:58Oh no!
05:59No!
06:00Oh!
06:01Oh!
06:02Oh!
06:03Oh!
06:04Look at its eye!
06:05Look at its eye!
06:06Look at its eye!
06:07The way its eyes roll back when it's attacking, the eyes...
06:11If you were just swimming along and you saw a tiger shark, you would literally void all your innermost things.
06:18We're in a wetsuit, and it could just bite all the way through that.
06:21They're a highly visual predator.
06:23You see that big eye as well, so they're extremely aware of what you are on a dive.
06:28Coming face to face with a tiger shark just feels like a really daunting, challenging task.
06:35I have the image in my head, and my heart's kind of going a little bit now, because I'm thinking about it.
06:43These are very serious predators, and on a dive, they are unpredictable.
06:48They can be a little bit sneaky, so you need to have your head on a swivel.
06:52Especially on this dive, because there's every chance there could be a hundred sharks.
06:57A hundred?
06:58A hundred?
06:59There's going to be many species, and not just going to be tigers.
07:01Okay.
07:03Wow.
07:05I think I have to be led by the experts here as to whether they think that I'm confident enough.
07:09At the moment, I'm feeling pretty nervous, and the thought of a hundred sharks swimming around my head is terrifying.
07:17So, if they're this fearsome apex predator that eats anything, why should we be getting in the water with them?
07:24This is exactly why. To break down this preconceived notion that these sharks are dangerous and should be killed.
07:30That they're not a part of the ecosystem that is vitally important.
07:34Over the last 50 years, we've wiped out 50 to 70% of all large fish species, including sharks, from the planet.
07:43Don't be afraid of seeing a shark. Be afraid of not seeing a shark, because if you see one, that means you're in a healthy ecosystem.
07:51We've deliberately intensified the dives so that we can prepare you for this final big dive.
07:58And this is a key moment. You all need to have a good think to yourselves, am I ready for this?
08:05The decision about who's going in is a decision that we're going to make, but it's also your decision as well.
08:10If you don't feel 100% committed to this dive, we don't want you to do it.
08:14Thank you, everybody. Thank you.
08:25For the final tiger shark dive, the team are moving to the world-famous dive site, Tiger Beach.
08:31It's a couple of square miles of sand, 20 miles offshore and 10 metres deep, where they can encounter bigger sharks and ultimately the tiger shark.
08:49Grand Bahama is surrounded by coral reefs, which are vital for survival of a healthy shark population.
08:55But over the last 50 years, 80% of reefs in this region have disappeared because of factors like rising water temperatures and overfishing.
09:07So before diving with tiger sharks, Lenny, Rachel and Dougie are off to discover there is a ray of hope for this critical marine ecosystem.
09:18Hey, guys. How are you doing? Very good. How are you? Welcome.
09:20Yeah. Welcome to Coral Vita. This is a coral farm.
09:25And these guys are an amazing organisation that help to revive and restore coral reefs.
09:31Corals provide habitat for almost a quarter of all marine life, including around 130 species of sharks and rays.
09:41You're going to be creating these little coral cookies that these guys go out into the reef and they out plant them.
09:48And basically that helps to revive and regenerate some of these deteriorated reefs in the Bahamas.
09:57So we're guys going to take a shot at making some cookies.
10:00These will be cookies that go onto our outplant sites and live out the rest of their lives.
10:04We could be thousands of years into the future. So no pressure, guys.
10:08They are quite slimy, aren't they? The coral.
10:11That's kind of their defence mechanism as well as to keep them moist as they're out of the water right now.
10:14They've been around for a while. They have a few coping mechanisms.
10:20These are both a plant and an animal at the same time.
10:23And a rock if you count their calcium carbonate exoskeleton.
10:26And do different creatures eat different corals?
10:29Corals do have a few predators. So one of the main ones are pirate fish as well as four-eyed butterfly fish.
10:34Which is why the sharks then play a key role, because they keep those parrot fish in check.
10:38So it's such an important cycle.
10:44Big tiger sharks will actually regulate the reef sharks that will feed on then the parrot fish and other wrasses that will graze on the coral.
10:54So those tiger sharks help to balance and ensure we have a functional, healthy reef system.
10:59Put very simply, without sharks, we don't have corals. Without corals, we don't have sharks.
11:07It's an amazing place. They literally grow sections of coral reef here.
11:12And maybe that will help to bring the reefs back. You know, they're in decline.
11:15So we need people like this.
11:18So you can tell with this one here.
11:19And it starts small, it's baby steps, but then hopefully in 50 years time, boom.
11:24Little bit better, reef's back.
11:26Good luck, guys. Good luck.
11:28We have to look after these things, otherwise they're going to disappear.
11:30And it's going to affect us.
11:32You know, if something affects the sharks, that affects the reefs.
11:35If something affects the reefs, that affects everything else.
11:38I've got a great admiration for your enthusiasm for nature.
11:45I've noticed that where a lot of people would run away, you move towards because you're really interested.
11:50That is my thing.
11:52I wrote a book about plastic in the ocean and what people can do.
11:57So to see trash in their home really gets to me.
12:03And it really depresses me, really.
12:05Why isn't the next book you write about this stuff?
12:08You need to do a part two!
12:10Sequelize it!
12:12I think if people are sufficiently moved to go, somebody should do something about that, then usually that somebody is you.
12:20It can start small, but then you can go further than that.
12:25You can go back and write a book about sharks now and go, sharks are so cool, don't kill them.
12:30That's what I'm going to do, yeah.
12:31It's just a matter of being brave enough to say, I think this is bullshit, can we change this?
12:38Yeah, yeah.
12:39And if enough people do that, then maybe something will change.
12:43My life is going to change after this, I think.
12:45It's getting very real now.
12:55Just sharks everywhere.
12:58Lucy, last night you were on the fence. Have you made your decision?
13:02You all right, Lucy?
13:03Are you all right, Lucy?
13:04Oh, you're all right.
13:06I'm just felt a bit scared. Sorry.
13:07With one day left to go before the final tiger shark dive, the team are having a last practice run with adult lemon sharks and Caribbean reef sharks.
13:28Three reefies. Four reefies. Five, six. They're just lurking beneath us. There's another one.
13:40Oh, wow.
13:42There are a lot down there. A lot.
13:43There's a lot. There's a lot of sharks.
13:45Another great opportunity for the team to go down, really practice those skills again, get used to using the redirection poles, familiar with this environment so that we can hopefully approve them all to dive tomorrow with the tiger sharks.
14:04Oh, wow.
14:14I'm really nervous.
14:18This reef's not someone.
14:20Well, it's on the well.
14:22Oh, gosh.
14:23This is the first time Helen has been in the water since she aborted the night dive.
14:27Stop. Stop.
14:29My bar's filling out with water.
14:31Oh, God. I'm ready to have a king.
14:33I've had a couple of setbacks with my dives.
14:37You okay?
14:38I want to be able to get to the point where I can get into the sea with these tiger sharks because that's the one shot that we've talked about that I haven't experienced yet.
14:46Can you help me down?
14:48Ready?
14:49Let's go.
14:51Okay.
14:52Okay, come on, guys. Let's do this. This is the last opportunity for you guys to showcase your skills.
15:06We've got Ross here. We've got Addy.
15:09And it's proper closing counters there.
15:12Slightly smaller one.
15:15Right in front of Lucy there.
15:17She did very well to stand the ground.
15:19They're all doing really well.
15:20Just waiting for Helen to come down. Hopefully, this will give her the confidence to be able to go on that tiger shark dive.
15:31You want to stick your head down? Wait.
15:34Oh, my gosh.
15:38I'm really panicking.
15:40I'm sorry. I want to come out. Please, I want to come out.
15:43Have an hour.
15:45The easiest, most fundamental bit is getting into the water safely.
15:49The fact that Helen can't do that gives me serious doubts as to whether she's going to be able to participate in this tiger shark dive.
16:01You're all right.
16:02Four seconds in, six seconds out.
16:04Get that nice, relaxed breathing back again.
16:08Just push yourself away from my blow, okay?
16:11Just push back, push back.
16:12There you go.
16:14Okay, let's go down.
16:15Okay.
16:16Looks like she's going again.
16:17It's okay.
16:19Oh, I had a panic then.
16:22Well, Helen has made it down, which is great to see.
16:25Oh, my gosh.
16:27Big moment for Helen.
16:28She's had a few tricky dives.
16:30And sometimes the people that take a little bit longer to get familiar actually end up being the ones that are the better divers down the road.
16:38I can see the silhouettes of sharks in the distance.
16:43That's getting very close.
16:45Oh, my gosh.
16:46Oh, look.
16:47Over there.
16:49And there's another one.
16:51Lucy's currently waving her arms around like she's playing charades.
16:57And it's scaring me a little bit.
16:59Keep my arms in.
17:00Ross is just up to me.
17:01Well, why do you need to keep my hands in?
17:03Because these sharks look like fingers.
17:07Whoa.
17:09Okay, I'm going to have to try and relax.
17:11Holy shit.
17:12Look at that one.
17:13Look at it.
17:14It's coming straight towards us.
17:15Here we come.
17:16Woo.
17:24Jesus Christ.
17:25Yeah, that wasn't scary at all.
17:27So, Lenny Henry using the redirection pole.
17:32Great job extending the pole.
17:35Perfect placement.
17:37Some good food for thought after today's dive.
17:42Everyone did really well.
17:44It's also great to see Helen a lot calmer on this dive.
17:47She doesn't seem to have any problems with her masks.
17:50I've even seen her smile quite a lot, so I think she's in a much better place.
17:55But let's wait and see.
17:56We're going to have a discussion before we make that final decision.
18:00Did you have difficulty getting in the water?
18:02Yeah.
18:03It was choppy and I felt the panic that I felt with the mask the other day.
18:07Yeah.
18:08And I had to come back to the ladder and just, like, have a strong word with myself.
18:11I like the fact that you saw a big shark and you went,
18:15Shark!
18:17I went, hands in, hands in, hands in.
18:20And you went, oh, yeah.
18:22Oh, I did the thing with the stick.
18:23I did the thing with the stick.
18:25I did the thing with the stick.
18:27Did you move a shark on?
18:28It was great.
18:29Did you redirect the shark?
18:30I rebuke you.
18:33Do you feel ready, Lucy?
18:35I do.
18:36I don't know.
18:37I don't know if I do.
18:38I don't know whether I do.
18:39I'm going to just see how I feel.
18:41You're going to sleep on it.
18:42And it's not just our decision as well.
18:43You know, we might not all be going in there.
18:51I don't know whether that's my last dive or not.
18:53I really want to do this again.
18:57I have to wait and see if the team think I'm ready or not.
19:03With the last challenge completed, we've asked the team to come together to hear who's earned their place on the tiger shark dive.
19:11How does everybody feel now?
19:13Because it's our last day tomorrow.
19:14It's the big one.
19:16I feel ready.
19:18I feel ready.
19:19I feel ready for tomorrow.
19:21Do you know what?
19:22I feel really lucky because I was speaking to someone today who's been diving for years and has never seen a hammerhead shark.
19:26And we've seen them.
19:27And we've seen them.
19:28So I feel very privileged.
19:29And, yes, not sure about tomorrow.
19:34What was great today is that we're looking out for each other.
19:37We're a squad now, you know?
19:39I've been having dreams, though.
19:40Like, my subconscious is telling me, it's like, sharks are scary, sharks are scary.
19:43I've been dreaming a lot about sharks.
19:45I've been dreaming about us all in the water with sharks.
19:47Is it a happy dream or a sad dream?
19:51It's not.
19:52It's just a tense dream.
19:53Oh.
19:54It's just tense.
19:55Be scared.
19:56The hills.
19:57The hills.
19:58Teen tie-dye.
19:59Yay, daddy.
20:01So how is everyone feeling after a day out in the ocean?
20:05Very, very good.
20:06Salty.
20:09Salty.
20:10Yeah, as you should be.
20:11Yeah.
20:12But you will sleep good tonight.
20:13And I'm looking forward to tomorrow, which is our big day.
20:16Woo!
20:17Yes.
20:18Sorry.
20:19Somebody's excited.
20:20That just came out.
20:21Sorry.
20:22What was it like for you guys when you first saw tiger sharks?
20:25I was on my first ever real shark dive in Fiji.
20:28And we'd been diving with massive amount of the biggest bull sharks I've ever seen in my life.
20:34And we were heading up, and then all of a sudden, gigantic striped submarine just came down.
20:41And then it went off into the mist again, and it was just life-changing.
20:45Wow.
20:46Now, we have been reviewing your skills since the beginning.
20:50And we have come to a decision as to who has the skills necessary to perform this potentially dangerous tiger shark dive with us.
20:59And those people are Lenny, Ross, Dougie, Lucy, Addie.
21:12And Rachel.
21:13That's all of us.
21:14Well done.
21:15Yeah!
21:16That's all of us, right?
21:17It's not.
21:18Not me.
21:19Oh.
21:20Oh.
21:21Oh.
21:22Oh.
21:23Oh.
21:27Helen, we're so sorry.
21:29You have had the most tremendous heroic journey out of everyone.
21:33But we don't feel that you're quite ready for this dive.
21:36And we're so proud of you.
21:38For as far as you've come, woman to woman, it's really meaningful because for me personally, I struggled to become a diver as well.
21:47And I've been through a lot.
21:48I see your grit and I see how strong you are.
21:51And I look forward to seeing you even like flourish as a diver in the future.
21:55I know you will.
21:57That means a lot.
21:59That's so nice.
22:06And we know you guys are one team, one dream.
22:08So, of course, it will be great, Helen, if you can join everyone tomorrow at the dive site and support everyone as they go in on this last challenge.
22:17Absolutely.
22:18Team Shark.
22:19Team Shark.
22:20Team Shark.
22:21Can I just say, I'm really good.
22:23How are you going to be when we're all down there?
22:25Ultimately, it's about safety.
22:26And I don't think I'm safe enough and confident enough to go down with you.
22:31And it's sad.
22:32It is sad not to complete it with you.
22:34But for me, it's been such an amazing journey this far.
22:38I'm sad to not meet the tiger sharks.
22:40I would have felt like a warrior if I'd have managed to do that.
22:44But I'm proud that I can go back home with my head held high.
22:49And I can tell my daughters about this experience knowing that I'm the girl that doesn't like to get her hair wet or put her head under water.
22:56Shall we do a cheers to Helen?
22:58Cheers to Helen.
22:59Helen.
23:00Helen.
23:01Helen.
23:02Helen.
23:03Helen.
23:04I do have to tell you that in the past couple of years there has been a fatality at this dive site.
23:10The reason there was a fatality was because these people were diving in unsafe conditions.
23:17This is not something you'll have to worry about.
23:19The crew that we're diving with are some of the best in the world.
23:23And we know exactly what we're doing.
23:25And that's why you have a safety diver each that will be watching your back.
23:28Just remember, after that hammerhead dive, how everyone felt.
23:32That feeling.
23:33And this is where all of your skills that you've been learning over the last few weeks come into play.
23:38The way that you conduct yourself under water, not acting like food, so they don't treat you like food.
23:43I have had my confidence knocked a bit hearing that news.
23:48It's unnerving because we've had the last few weeks hearing that sharks are safe and that we don't need to fear them.
23:59But I guess that, you know, accidents happen and nature is uncontrollable.
24:06Yeah.
24:07I understand it is unnerving.
24:08It's a little unnerving.
24:09It is a little scary sometimes.
24:10You're stepping into the unknown.
24:13Yeah.
24:15Remember, even if you make the decision tonight to say yes to this dive, you can say no as late as being on the dive step with your equipment on.
24:23You don't have to go in.
24:24It's up to you.
24:25Yeah.
24:26Trust us.
24:27Yeah.
24:28That's all we ask.
24:30The end goal of this whole trip and experience is that we swim with these big tiger sharks.
24:41I want to be able to do it.
24:44But, um, honestly, I'm really scared.
24:49The team are heading 80 miles north of Bimini to the world's most renowned destination for encounters with tiger sharks.
25:08Tiger beach.
25:10Finally, now we're knocking on the door of the big tiger shark dive.
25:17We picked tiger beach for a reason.
25:19We know the sharks here.
25:20We know the dive sites.
25:21We have all the safety protocols in place and we have the right people to ensure that everyone is safe on all of these dives.
25:29Good morning, everyone.
25:30Good morning.
25:31Good morning.
25:32Good morning.
25:33Good morning.
25:34Good morning.
25:35The big day has finally arrived.
25:36Your hard work has brought you to this point and we hope that you're going to have a life-changing experience.
25:42The setup is not complicated.
25:44You will put on your dive gear.
25:46You'll enter the water.
25:48Being aware of everything that is going on around you.
25:51Remember everything that we've told you over the last couple of weeks.
25:54Put it all into motion.
25:55This is going to be wild.
25:58When you're down there, you might get a little bit overwhelmed, but just try and really absorb that moment with a big tiger shark.
26:08It's going to blow your mind.
26:11The current will be running from behind us through the bait box into the distance, which means the sharks will be coming from this direction.
26:18Over the bait box, get a food.
26:20They may swim towards you, but they're going to detect a wall of bodies.
26:25Sometimes it can be as close as you can lay out your hand and touch it, but the safety divers will be there and you'll have your poles.
26:31Could you refer to it as a wall of people rather than a wall of bodies?
26:39One of them that you need to watch out for is Emma.
26:42She's the matriarch of these waters.
26:44Every year, the team here in Bimini hold their breath, waiting to see if she survived another season.
26:50She's huge, so you'll know if you see her.
26:53If a tiger does come towards us with the pole, top of the head or the nose.
26:59Just point it out.
27:00They don't want to get damaged.
27:01You see when they're going in to bite something, their eyes will roll back because they're trying to protect their vulnerable parts.
27:06But if you have to, just push it out there.
27:10You don't need to jab it.
27:11You don't need to hit it.
27:12Lucy, last night you were on the fence.
27:14Have you made your decision?
27:15Are you all right, Lucy?
27:18Oh, you're all right.
27:19Oh, Lucy.
27:20Sorry.
27:27I just felt a bit scared.
27:28Sorry.
27:29Don't be too sorry.
27:30It's okay.
27:32I am feeling scared and overwhelmed by what we're stepping into.
27:42I'm really, really scared.
27:45I'm really, really scared.
27:49Lucy.
27:50I'm sorry.
27:51It's weird for me that Helen isn't doing it.
27:53It's like I have felt like the braver big sister with Helen and going and had someone to reassure.
27:59And now I don't have that person.
28:01I'm sorry.
28:02That I'm fractionally braver than.
28:04That it's just, I'm on my own.
28:06You're way brave.
28:07No, I'm really excited for you all.
28:09And I know how brave you are.
28:10And I will be cheering you on from the surface.
28:12Lucy, it's up to you.
28:14Do you want to do the dive?
28:16Yes, I'm going to do the dive.
28:19Come on, Lucy.
28:22But I reserve the right to, at the very last minute, change my mind.
28:29I'm really excited to hear all of you.
28:31Of course you are excited.
28:36Tiger Beach is a busy spot for many species of shark.
28:40The dive team will negotiate dozens of lemon and reef sharks before they gather round the bait box on the ocean floor, designed to draw in the bigger tiger sharks.
28:51There's a lot of sharks at the back of the boat.
28:54I would go as far as to call it a frenzy.
28:57You look at a big thing of sharks and you think, this could go horribly wrong.
29:03But as a comedian, when you're on stage, you can't think too far ahead.
29:08You've just got to enjoy that moment.
29:10You've just got to live in it.
29:12Let's go, guys. Let's go.
29:14Yes, Lucy.
29:15Let's do it.
29:19It's getting very real now.
29:22I don't know how you prepare for getting in the water with a tiger shark.
29:26A tiger shark, it's a first.
29:29I've got Paul next to me and he's going to make sure I don't die today.
29:37All the hard work, all the training, all the preparation has all been for this moment.
29:43This is the culmination of everything that we've worked for with these guys.
29:47Every ounce of bravery that they've had throughout this whole journey.
29:50You do not want to panic in front of a tiger shark.
29:55All right.
29:56Ready?
29:58Erica.
30:00There you go.
30:04Wow.
30:07Oh, God.
30:09Oh, fuck.
30:10I can't use Jamaican swear words down here because my family will be completely mortified.
30:22So I'm just going to stick to saying, holy fuck.
30:27It feels like, you know, like before you're getting on a roller coaster and you're like...
30:31You're getting strapped in.
30:32Getting strapped in.
30:33Something awesome is about to happen.
30:35It's probably the first time I've felt it.
30:37About what?
30:38Just the fear.
30:49Oh, there is a lot of sharks out here.
30:53Make sure the life insurance is up there, love.
31:03Descending now, level one, reef sharks.
31:08Ground floor.
31:09Hopefully tiger sharks.
31:16I'm feeling like we're doing this.
31:22It's going to be good.
31:23It's going to be good.
31:24I'm stepping in.
31:25I've got major FOMO.
31:26I'm really enjoying watching everybody.
31:27I couldn't help but wish that I'd been able to go down with them.
31:39Really active scene down here at the moment.
31:40It's really weird.
31:41I'm not even bothered about the reefs now.
31:42That's crazy.
31:43There are just sharks everywhere.
31:44A couple of reef sharks above my head.
31:45Still no slider sharks.
31:46Oh my goodness.
31:47These little lemon ones could be building us into a sense of false security.
31:48What the hell is that?
31:49Bloody hell.
31:50Bloody hell.
31:51That looks like a bug.
31:52That looks like a bug.
31:53That's crazy.
31:54That's crazy.
31:55There are just sharks everywhere.
31:56A couple of reef sharks above my head.
31:59Oh my goodness.
32:00Oh my goodness.
32:01Still no slider sharks.
32:02Still no slider sharks.
32:03Oh my goodness.
32:04These little lemon ones could be building us into a sense of false security.
32:10What the hell is that?
32:16Bloody hell.
32:19That looks like a bug of tiger shark.
32:23Whoa.
32:24Oh look at the stripes.
32:30Holy crap.
32:34Oh my god, there's two.
32:35There's two.
32:36Bloody hell!
32:37That's got so many teeth and they're all jagged.
32:40This is magic.
32:43We're surrounded by Caribbean reef sharks.
32:45We've got lemon sharks.
32:46And two massive tiger sharks.
32:49Let the fun and games begin.
32:52Oh, my God, they just look like the posses.
33:11This is amazing.
33:15Everyone has got the best seat in the house.
33:18It's like a small building with fins, and it's hilarious that we think we can keep them
33:25away with some plumbing pipe.
33:27Safety diver Stefan is highly experienced with these sharks, so he is in control of
33:32the bait box.
33:33Uh-oh.
33:34Oh, my God, they're in my way for me.
33:42These tigers have changed their behavior quite a bit.
33:48They are moving fast and furious and coming straight in.
33:51Now, this first tiger is going for the bait box.
33:55Oh, my God.
33:57Whoa, whoa, whoa.
34:00The box is gone.
34:03Oh, no.
34:04The box is gone.
34:05This is a hazard, because now the sand is being turned up as this tiger shark tries to attack
34:10this box.
34:11And that means the visibility is going to be reduced here, and we need to keep our heads
34:16on a swivel.
34:17Two tigers over there.
34:20This is the maddest thing I've ever done in my entire life.
34:31And Stefan's got the bait box back.
34:33Nice job.
34:34All of a sudden, everyone cleared out.
34:36I feel like the current may have shifted a bit.
34:38They've gone out in the distance.
34:39We don't know where they are at the moment.
34:41Just have reef sharks and lemons.
34:43So what they kind of tend to do is they come in directly to this box, and then cruise right
34:50around the outside, and then come back in on the scent trail.
34:54They just sneak up this sneaky, sneaky, sneaky sharks.
34:59How could an animal so big sneak up on you?
35:02It is, uh, it is kind of peaceful.
35:07Where the tiger's gone?
35:10Where the tiger's gone?
35:11There it is.
35:12Right behind us.
35:13Right behind us.
35:14Right behind us.
35:15Behind you.
35:16Behind you.
35:25Our celebrity dive team is 10 metres underwater, being circled by two 14-foot adult tiger sharks.
35:34Right behind us.
35:35Right behind us.
35:36Right behind us.
35:37Behind you.
35:38Behind you.
35:43Wow.
35:44This is crazy.
35:46They're coming right to our faces.
35:49These sharks have no sense of personal space.
35:52They're just coming in, trying to find food, with no shame.
35:58These are dangerous, powerful creatures.
36:02If you encounter them in the wrong way.
36:05What is amazing is they're not interested in us.
36:13They don't look like they want to kill us.
36:16They don't look like they're human hunters.
36:19They just look like giant sharks that want to live and do their thing.
36:25And then just like that, they all went.
36:40Oh my God.
36:43It's Emma.
36:44We have got the queen.
36:48Oh my God.
36:49That doesn't look real.
36:51That is a big, big shark.
36:55Emma is more than 30 years old.
36:57At just over 15 feet in length and weighing over half a tonne, she ruled these waters for nearly 25 years.
37:04She's had multiple pregnancies and countless run-ins with fishing gear and other sharks.
37:10Oh my God.
37:11This is nuts.
37:12It's going over my head.
37:13Oh jeez.
37:14Jeez.
37:15Straight over the top.
37:16Good job everyone.
37:17Oh fuck me.
37:18That was amazing.
37:19Amazing.
37:20I can safely say I have soiled my wetsuit.
37:23Wow.
37:24That is just beyond anything.
37:38Your brain can't take it in.
37:42Here's Emma, coming straight towards us.
37:47Oh shit that was close.
37:52First time redirecting a tiger shark.
37:56Yeah!
37:57The power of this shark!
38:03There goes Emma, swimming straight past me and Lucy.
38:06And she's just shaking her head.
38:10I don't know why I'm laughing.
38:15Oh, tears coming down my face.
38:17I'm not scared.
38:19This is just extraordinary.
38:22Tiger shark is certainly a majestic creature.
38:29You really don't seem to care about us.
38:33I'm gobsmacked.
38:43Beautiful!
38:45Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
38:47This utter, utter respect.
38:57What a dive.
39:00No wonder this is the best place in the world.
39:03I wish Helen could have seen this.
39:05I really do.
39:07It's inspirational to be part of this last dive.
39:12The goal was to get them comfortable in the water with sharks.
39:16It's culminated in this incredible moment with these majestic tiger sharks.
39:22If we want to have healthy oceans, then we have healthy shark populations.
39:30It doesn't get much better than this.
39:32This is what I came to see.
39:36I love this.
39:37I love this.
39:38I love this.
39:39I remember this forever.
39:41It's just extraordinary.
39:43Bye, tiger shark.
39:45Bye, tiger shark.
39:47Bye, tiger shark.
39:55Oh, my God.
39:57Oh, that was incredible.
40:12And I'm still crying with their good tears this time.
40:17Oh, you don't get to do that every day, do you?
40:20Wow.
40:21That was amazing.
40:22Just absolutely off the chart.
40:25Amazing.
40:26Oh, my God.
40:28Oh, my God.
40:30Lenny, Lenny, Lenny.
40:32We did it.
40:33My goodness.
40:35Well, that's the first non-curse word I've used in the last 25 minutes.
40:41I've never seen anything like it in my life.
40:47It's just a life-altering experience.
40:50These things are big.
40:51They're wild creatures, and we have to pay them utter respect.
40:56I've got a smile on my face.
40:58It's crazy.
40:59Having that face-to-face encounter with an animal that size and knowing that they deserve to be protected,
41:05they deserve a chance to survive, that's what this guy was all about.
41:09Yeah.
41:10This right here is what I've worked for my whole life, just to have this moment.
41:13Wow.
41:14And it means the world.
41:15Oh, you've got me going now.
41:19Oh, God, I've got a bit of salt and water in me eyes.
41:22What's going on there?
41:23You know, right?
41:24Here she is.
41:25Yeah.
41:26She's shock-metised.
41:27Shock-metised.
41:28Are you...
41:29Are you hypnotised?
41:30I don't know what I am.
41:36Welcome back.
41:37Yeah.
41:38Bloody hell.
41:39I mean, they just command your respect, don't they?
41:44Eddie!
41:45Come on, bro.
41:47That was...
41:48That was...
41:50It's just...
41:51Like, this is...
41:52These are the moments in life that you live for, isn't it?
41:55Danny, Paul, Tristan, I understand now.
41:58I get it.
41:59We live in this beautiful planet and we've got these incredible creatures.
42:02And it's down to us.
42:03It's down to us to take care of the ocean so that they have the best opportunity to survive.
42:13Our minds are blown.
42:14Lucy's having an epiphany.
42:15I can't stop laughing.
42:16I can't stop laughing.
42:17I can't stop laughing.
42:18I'm so happy.
42:19I was happy to be alive.
42:21I felt so alive.
42:23I'm happy I'm still alive.
42:25I'm just...
42:26I'm really happy I'm still alive.
42:28I'm just happy, happy, happy and thank you all.
42:31All you've got to do is step through that door of fear.
42:34Yeah.
42:35Be brazen.
42:36Yeah.
42:37And that's where you get to have the best experiences of your life.
42:38Yeah.
42:39Well done, everybody.
42:41Tiger!
42:42Well done, everybody.
42:44This was awesome.
42:46This was awesome.
42:47This was awesome.
42:48This was the most incredible thing I've ever done.
42:53The scariest.
42:54It was just felt on the edge of everything.
43:00I did it!
43:09It's been such a sharp awakening this and learning about the ocean.
43:12And what it's made me do is realize how I want to continue my diving journey.
43:17Even the fact that I can want to do that and that I can appreciate that is a massive step forward from being able to, you know, not be able to put my head under the water in the swimming pool.
43:26The very start of this process, the plan was to essentially try and change the team's perception of sharks.
43:35And I genuinely believe that we have transformed them into shark lovers now.
43:40And I'm hoping by watching this series and learning more about sharks that people will now realize these animals are not mindless killers.
43:50We are not on their menu and they are important to the ocean because then hopefully people will be more supportive to ensure that their populations are healthy.
43:59I now 100% truly believe that sharks are not monstrous, mindless killers.
44:08They are amazing and we've totally judged a book by its cover.
44:13And we need to do everything we can to protect them.
44:16I definitely feel stronger because I've been put in front of an animal that I've perceived as a man-killer.
44:26People are saying to me, if you don't feel comfortable, you don't have to do this.
44:30And I did it.
44:31There's another layer to me now and that's happened because of this experience.
44:40Has it been worth it?
44:41Yes, absolutely.
44:43I didn't like sharks.
44:44And now I think they are incredible, beautiful creatures that I have felt inspired and humbled in their presence.
45:01I hope I can be a shark ambassador.
45:03I really do.
45:04Because having looked individual sharks in the eye, I kind of said, you know, I will.
45:09I'll do better.
45:10I've made that promise.
45:11I've got to fulfill it now.
45:13This has really opened up the future for me.
45:17And I've overcome my fear of water.
45:20It has been the most incredible experience of my life.
45:23I've loved every second.
45:26Most of every second.
45:28I'm going to talk non-stop to everyone I meet about the fact that I've swung with tiger sharks and what an absolute stone-cold legend I am.
45:38All of us came out of the water knowing that we'd experienced something that is so extraordinary.
45:49And there was part of me that went, has that changed me?
45:54So, turns out, oh God, have I been on a journey? Turn that off.
46:02Team shark. Team shark! Team shark!
46:12I think there's a great many things that I've been lucky enough to do in my life and I'll be very, very proud of them.
46:21proud of them. This is up there, I think. My perception of sharks is what I've seen in the
46:28films, really. To see them in real life, you do get that they are apex predators, but you also get
46:34the feeling that they are vulnerable too. And then actually, we're the thing that's the problem.
46:40We have to look after these things, otherwise they're going to disappear.
46:45My mom would say, what's that got to do with me? But actually, in the wider scheme of things,
46:50we have to sort of go, this is to do with all of us. One day, there's going to be a moment,
46:56a tipping point, where we all go, okay, enough.
47:20You're welcome.
47:22You're welcome.
