00:00A police officer is among four people killed in a Manhattan shooting.

00:05Another person was critically injured.

00:07Officials said that a gunman walked into an office building during rush hour and opened fire.

00:13Police said that he was later found dead.

00:15John Sudworth has this report.

00:18Video footage shows the gunman wearing body armour,

00:21striding across the forecourt of the Park Avenue skyscraper with a high-powered M4 rifle at his side.

00:28Once inside the building, he began spraying the lobby with gunfire

00:32before taking the lift to the 33rd floor and continuing shooting.

00:38Four people were killed, including a police officer, 36-year-old Dideral Islam.

00:43We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence,

00:50including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam.

00:56He served in the 47th precinct.

01:00He was saving lives.

01:02He was protecting New Yorkers.

01:04Shootings are rare in Manhattan, although public concern was already heightened

01:09after the killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO late last year,

01:13with the suspect in that case, Luigi Mangione, currently awaiting trial.

01:18In this latest case, little is known about 27-year-old Shane Tamura,

01:22who the police say died of a self-inflicted gun wound at the scene.

01:26According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas,

01:30Mr Tamura has a documented mental health history.

01:33His motives are still under investigation,

01:36and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location.

01:40The skyscraper where the shooting took place houses a number of high-profile companies,

01:46including the headquarters of the NFL.

01:49Determining a motive, if there was one, will now be a priority for the investigation.
