Childcare worker charged with torture of baby boy in Queensland centre

WARNING: This story contains descriptions of alleged child abuse. A Queensland childcare worker has been charged with torturing and repeatedly assaulting a one-year-old baby boy.

00:00The allegations coming out of the childcare centre are that the little boy who was one

00:09at the time was smothered repeatedly with a pillow and a mattress, his face was stomped

00:15on, he was thrown across the floor, a playpen was thrown at him, and when he was asleep

00:22he was pulled up and thrown down, and so many other things, and this was happening over

00:27a number of days in August and September of last year.

00:30You've spoken to the family, what are they saying?

00:33Their whole world was turned upside down by this, as you can imagine.

00:38They saw bruises on the little boy and they asked the centre what was going on and they

00:43were brushed off, and it was only when weeks later they got a call from the police to say

00:49what had actually happened and that the woman was being charged that they realised the gravity

00:55of what had gone on, and so they feel completely let down by the system.

00:59We sadly do hear about cases of abuse, many of which you've reported on, it seems unusual

01:06to hear about a charge of torture.

01:08Yeah, it is, as I said there's so many cases of serious incidents, 27% over three years increase,

01:18but torture is another level and I think it was because of the repeated nature of what

01:23went on over a number of days.

01:26You've brought many of these cases to light, Adele, what does this tell us about the state

01:30of childcare?

01:32It tells us it's in absolute crisis and really deep reform is needed urgently.

01:40What's the regulator saying?

01:41The regulator is saying that they have taken action and it is open for review.

01:47We sent them a list of detailed questions and that's what we got back.

01:51And what's been the response from the childcare sector, childcare centre itself?

01:55The childcare centre has said, you know, it's a complicated case and they want all kids

02:02to be well looked after and they couldn't say anymore.
