Hundreds of people gathered on Calton Hill on Friday night to watch a comedian fold a fitted sheet beside the National Monument of Scotland.

The unusual event was a promo for New Zealand stand-up Dan Boerman ahead of his upcoming Fringe show – a move the 31-year-old said was the ‘the craziest marketing stunt of my career’ adding ‘if you don’t have rich parents or thousands of dollars for PR, sometimes you just have to think outside the box’

00:00I've got a show in the Edinburgh French called Dan Borman Folds
00:29a fitted sheet on his own does anyone here reckon I can fold this thing?
00:39Who do you think I can fold this? Give us a chair
00:43Here's some doubt, give us a chair if you think that I don't have this
00:47That is horrible for my confidence
00:59So I dreamt up the idea for my solo hour last September about a year ago in New Zealand
01:17And it's called Dan Borman Folds a fitted sheet on his own
01:21I think the motivation for the name originally was it's like a quintessential millennial struggle
01:29Trying to fold a fitted sheet is almost magic because no one really knows how to do it
01:34But it's something that one struggles with
01:36And I've written a solo show about I was in a relationship with a woman for a better part of 10 years
01:43Still good friends but split up a couple years back
01:45And it's a bit of a nod to that really
01:47An hour about life on the other side of a relationship and navigating life on your own I suppose
01:55In New Zealand it's funny, it's ironic to celebrate something really mundane
02:01I'm just really glad, really stoked that people were inside the joke and they were on board with what I was doing
02:09I had written on the flyers and all the promos
02:11I was like I'm going to be up Colton Hill doing this promoing
02:13I hadn't been up here until a couple days ago
02:15So when I got here I was like oh cool this is
02:17What a backdrop for anything
02:19For a thousand people to sit around and have a laugh, you know
02:23And cheer someone on for nothing
02:25I'm really pleased with where the show's at
02:37I'm proud of the writing that's gone into it
02:39And it is, it's high energy
02:41It's chaotic and it's fun
02:43It's relatable
02:45It's observational, it's kiwi
02:47It's a bit weird
02:49It's value for money
02:51It's a bit weird
02:53Thank you
