Peter Fox MS talks on the MCC decision to change the statutory requirements for free home to school transport
Transcript
00:00Well it was disappointing to hear this week that Monmouthshire County Council's Cabinet
00:10have decided to move home-to-school transport mileages to the statutory maximum requiring
00:19secondary school children to walk at least three miles to school and those at primary to two miles
00:25to school now this is something i as a past leader at a council and following conservative controlled
00:32administrations resisted because in a rural authority likes of Monmouthshire you have to
00:38provide safe routes to school safe walking routes to school and the requirement now to on the council
00:45will be significant in making sure that those people who would children who are now going to
00:51have to walk those extra mileages can do that safely this is a cost-cutting measure and it's not
00:58putting the needs of our young people first and sadly we're seeing this far too often in Monmouthshire
01:04County Council now where these rash decisions are being made without the deepest thought that's needed
