00:00Cambodia has welcomed a proposal by President Trump for a ceasefire with Thailand after
00:05days of cross-border fighting.
00:08Thailand said it was willing to consider a ceasefire, but that dialogue must come first.
00:12Mr Trump told the leaders of both countries there would be no talks on reducing U.S. tariffs
00:18until the fighting stopped.
00:20Shelling continued overnight after the U.S. President's calls.
00:24Our South East Asia correspondent Jonathan Head reports from the Thai-Cambodian border.
00:31So could President Trump have more success here in South East Asia than he's had so far
00:36in Gaza or Ukraine?
00:38The response to his unexpected phone calls to both Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand
00:44has so far been very positive.
00:46The Cambodian side eagerly want a ceasefire, that's President Trump's demand.
00:50Hun Met said he was very grateful for President Trump's intervention.
00:55But remember, Cambodia had already asked for a ceasefire at the U.N. on Friday.
00:59Its own military forces are much weaker than Thailand's.
01:02And we believe they've probably been taking a lot of punishment from the relentless Thai
01:07artillery barrages and airstrikes that we've seen over the last three days.
01:11On the Thai side, the response is positive and warm.
01:15But the Thai Prime Minister said only that they would agree to a ceasefire in principle
01:20if they saw good intentions from the Cambodian side.
01:24That's actually been the Thai position all along.
01:26The Thai military and the government do not appear ready for a ceasefire right now.
01:30As far as the Thai military is concerned, they still have unfinished business.
01:34They still want to push Cambodian forces well back from the border and probably inflict
01:39more damage on them.
01:40There's a lot of anger in this country over those rocket attacks on Thursday which killed
01:4413 Thai civilians.
01:46And the Thai side has always said what they want is dialogue with Cambodia first.
01:51Before any ceasefire, the Thai Prime Minister reiterated that position in his response to
01:57Donald Trump's phone call.
01:59So ostensibly, that phone call hasn't changed anything.
02:02We have seen shelling overnight coming both ways.
02:06We've seen some buildings destroyed here in Thailand.
02:08We assume the Thais have just kept up that ongoing artillery barrage over to the Cambodian side.
02:13But the key point in President Trump's statement was that he said he also warned both sides.
