UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under growing international and domestic pressure to officially recognize the state of Palestine. Following France’s bold move and mounting calls from within his own cabinet, Starmer now claims recognition is inevitable, declaring Palestinian statehood an “inalienable right.” However, he stopped short of providing a timeline, raising questions over the UK’s real intent.

In the backdrop of the catastrophic Gaza crisis, where over 38,000 have died and thousands more are displaced, Starmer pledged humanitarian aid, child evacuations, and renewed diplomatic efforts. Yet critics argue that his words fall short without clear policy moves. As Macron gains global support for France’s recognition, eyes are now fixed on whether Starmer will act — or delay. The Gaza war’s horrors have intensified demands for urgent Western action. Is the UK’s recognition promise just lip service?

00:00The appalling scenes in Gaza are unrelenting. And I know the British people are sickened by
00:25what is happening. The images of starvation and desperation are utterly horrifying.
00:35The denial of aid to children and to babies is completely unjustifiable,
00:43just as the continued captivity of hostages is completely unjustifiable.
00:49Hundreds of civilians have been killed while seeking aid. Children killed whilst collecting water.
01:00It is a humanitarian catastrophe and it must end. We've put millions of pounds of aid into Gaza.
01:08We've announced an extra 40 million this year. But that help is not getting in.
01:15So we're scaling up our work. We are accelerating efforts to evacuate children from Gaza who need
01:23critical medical assistance, bringing them to the UK for specialist medical treatment.
01:31News that Israel will allow countries to airdrop aid into Gaza has come far too late.
01:38But we will do everything we can to get aid in via this route. We are already working urgently with
01:47the Jordanian authorities to get British aid onto planes and into Gaza. More broadly, alongside our
01:57closest allies, I am working on a pathway to peace in the region, focused on the practical solutions
02:06that will make a real difference to the lives of those who are suffering in this war.
02:12That pathway will set out concrete steps to turn the desperately needed ceasefire into a lasting peace.
02:22Recognition of a Palestinian state has to be one of those steps. I'm unequivocal about that.
02:29But it must be part of a wider plan which ultimately results in a two-state solution and lasting security
02:38for Palestinians and Israelis. That is the way to ensure that recognition is a tool of maximum impact
02:47to improve the lives of those who are suffering. And that must always be our ultimate goal.
02:54The fact that we rebuilt the UK's standing on the world stage enables us to rally international action
03:03behind real, purposeful, practical solutions. That is what we have done with the Coalition of the
03:11Willing in support of Ukraine. And that is what must happen in the Middle East. Building a new
03:18international coalition behind a plan to end the suffering, now and for the long term.
