Georges Abdallah receives hero’s welcome in Beirut after 40 years in French prison

Celebrations erupted at Beirut’s airport as supporters welcomed Georges Abdallah, a pro-Palestinian communist militant, following his release from a French prison after more than 40 years behind bars. Abdallah's return marks the end of the longest incarceration in France’s recent history.

00:38It was a sacrifice for freedom and he has turned into an icon
00:41that inspires us all to believe that our sacrifices are not in vain.
00:48Despite all the hard times and all the defeats,
00:51our sacrifices will be fruitful for the coming generations
00:54so that we can achieve freedom and justice for Palestine.
00:57For many in Lebanon, George Abdallah was a political prisoner.
01:06The now 74-year-old had been serving a life sentence in France
01:09for complicity in the murders of two diplomats,
01:12one American and one Israeli, in 1982.
