00:00In first place as it stands right now, the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
00:05You take a look at the Central, it's still the Detroit Tigers, and then the Houston Astros in the AL West.
00:10As we take a look at the National League, just as a comparison, half-game lead for the New York Mets over the Phillies,
00:15one-game lead for the Chicago Cubs behind the Brewers, and then you take a look at the Dodgers, five games up on the Padres.
00:22Everybody in the American League is at arm's length right now.
00:25As we talk about the Jays, who a month ago never would have thought they would be in first place over the Yankees.
00:29Here they are. The Astros started the season like, oh, this team's cooked, man.
00:32They just don't have that same firepower. They have a five-game lead now.
00:36But the question I want to ask you here is, the team with the eight-game lead, which normally you would say,
00:41my goodness, they're playing great baseball.
00:43If you told Tigers fans, Joe Ranieri, before the season started, we're going to take a look on July 25th,
00:48give you a snapshot, they have an eight-game lead over the Guardians.
00:50You'd say, this is some of the best baseball we've ever seen.
00:53But panic, I don't know if it's setting in yet because they're still having an eight-game lead,
00:59but I want to start with the Tigers. What's going wrong, Joe, with the Tigers right now?
01:04Well, the offense, which is, let's face it, they only win school bowl games now,
01:11and everybody else is a liability. The bullpen is imploded, and they're not getting any run support,
01:17Donnie, which is absolutely crazy. And it all seems to stem around.
01:21I mean, Riley Green all of a sudden has gone completely cold.
01:24He can't hit anything. Carpenter went out, and he was kind of, appears to be what was the heart and soul
01:31of that team there. And then all of a sudden, he goes out, and they can't hit a lick.
01:40They've got nice pitching, starting with Scooble, but my goodness, they don't drive in runs.
01:46They leave a ton of guys on base. What you're seeing Toronto do now, hitting-wise,
01:53looks a lot like what Detroit did in the beginning of the season, but my goodness,
01:57have they cooled off. They need to get Carpenter back in that lineup as soon as possible,
02:03because he seemed to be really the big catalyst for them.
02:07But right now, it is the struggle bus for Detroit.
02:10But the good news is, is Minnesota really going to catch him, Donnie, at this point?
02:14Yeah, I don't think anybody's catching them, but you hit the nail on the head at that point,
02:19because we used to talk about the Detroit Tigers and say to ourselves,
02:23well, I mean, yeah, they're a good baseball team, and we'll see where it works out,
02:27but not really a lot to love from the plate appearances.
02:30Maybe some of those young guys will get it together.
02:32They put it together the first day for the season.
02:34Like, we were just taking that for granted.
02:35Like, okay, they finally arrived, and away they go.
02:37Like, so many years, we talk about the Seattle Mariners.
02:39Again, Cal Raleigh's not going to cover off the baseball.
02:42Rose Rainier's there now.
02:43They just make a trade for Naylor, but it's always like, well, tell me about the Mariners, Donnie.
02:47Well, the Mariners, they just don't really hit when they need to hit.
02:49They lose games two to one.
02:50It's like, okay.
02:50So when they go back to doing that, it's like, that's the expectation.
02:53But it was always like, okay, Detroit's got good pitching.
02:55They pitch in a pitcher's ballpark.
02:57Spunky young lineup out here to see if they can get the job done.
03:00And this year, they were doing it in spades.
03:01Now they're not doing it in spades, which is quite a shame that you look at it.
03:05But you're right about it.
03:07You would say, okay, four and a half game lead.
03:09Oh, time to panic.
03:09One game lead, what have we done?
03:12But all you need to do is win two of your next three games and the Guardians to lose two
03:15of the next three.
03:16It's like, okay, back up to 10 games.
03:17No big deal.
03:18Let's get our stripes back.
03:20But betting the Detroit Tigers right now, what's your feel on that?
03:23Is it riding streaks in both directions, good and bad?
03:25Or you know what?
03:26We might be buying low on the Tigers now on a day-to-day basis because they can't be this
03:30bad for longer.
03:31I only bet them on Scooble's day.
03:32Listen, they played themselves.
03:36They played so well and got a lot of things go there early in the season, Donnie, that
03:41they played themselves into a postseason.
03:44I just never, the reason I didn't like it had nothing to do with pitching, although that
03:49bullpen is a little suspect, but it was, I don't like that lineup.
03:53I don't think that is a postseason lineup that's going to out hit the Dodgers or the
03:59Yankees or Toronto.
04:00So that's not what that lineup is.
04:03It's a decent lineup, but there is nobody one through nine who I'm going, man, you just
04:09got to get through the first four or five.
04:11No, I don't think it's a great postseason lineup at all.
