00:00The government should focus on building public confidence in its My Digital ID initiative instead of making registration mandatory, says DAP's Charles Santiago.
00:11He told FMT that the low uptake, which has prompted calls for legislation to help boost registrations, showed the government had yet to win public support for the endeavor.
00:21He added that it suggests that the government was not doing enough to promote the initiative.
00:26Santiago said that if the government plans to legislate simply because people are not registering voluntarily, it reflects a failure on the government's part.
00:35He went on to suggest that the government engage stakeholders and get people talking about it to hype it up.
00:41On Monday, the Dewan Racket was told that the government was considering introducing legislation to regulate and boost the My Digital ID system.
00:49Meanwhile, Federal Territories Minister Dr. Zaleha Mustafa said the current voluntary registration model was an impediment that the government was looking to address.
