A Shropshire MP has demanded stronger support for businesses transitioning to net zero.

Telford MP Shaun Davies has pressed Minister for Energy Consumers, Miatta Fahnbulleh, to ensure that businesses in the region, including pubs and cafés and major manufacturers in Stafford Park and Halesfield, receive the support they require to decarbonise and remain competitive.

00:01When the government helps businesses reduce costs of energy, including aiding their transition,
00:05those businesses then can protect and create jobs and pass on savings to customers,
00:10from pubs and cafes in Dorley, Maly and Oakley, to my constituency,
00:13and manufacturers in Stafford Park and Halesfield, in my constituency.
00:17Will the government back these businesses and ask the energy giants
00:21who continue to make tens of billions of pounds of profit to pay for it?
00:25My Honourable Friend is completely right to stress the challenges faced by business,
00:32and the government is committed to backing businesses.
00:34We are working with the regulator to make sure that the system is fair for everyone,
00:39and as set out in our industrial strategy from 2027,
00:43the new British Industrial Competitor Scheme will reduce electricity costs by up to £40 per megawatt hour,
00:49which will benefit thousands of electricity-intensive industries,
00:52including the ones in my friend's constituencies.
00:55We are very clear we're backing businesses,
00:57and we will do everything we can to support them drive down bills.
