00:00In the ever-busy roads of Lagos, reckless driving is nothing new.
00:04But now, the government says it's time to get into the minds of traffic offenders.
00:10With the planned return of psychiatric evaluation for those who break traffic rules, opinions are flying.
00:17So we eat the streets to ask, do you think mental health tests for reckless drivers are necessary or just a way to shame people?
00:26In my opinion, it's not that they are mocking many individuals, because the same way we need to test our vehicles at the vehicle inspection office,
00:35is the same way we need to test those that are driving it too, you know, to know their mental capacity, if these people are fit for driving.
00:42A couple of days back, I was able to witness a driver that was driving through a zebra cross, and he almost eats a schoolgirl.
00:51And he was even claiming that the girl is supposed to walk fast.
00:53Most of these people bring frustration, depression, bring it behind the wheels, and see drive.
00:58So I feel that, you know, Lagos state governments, if they can test drivers and know if they are fit or not to be on the road, I think it will be okay.
01:08It will be, it is fair. It is not as if they are mocking anybody. That's my own opinion.
01:13From my perspective, yeah, I feel like it's a, it's a mockery of the people in the sense that, in the sense that, um, we take, some people take risks on the road, understandable.
01:23Some people, um, some people, they make mistakes, but, it is a mockery because, let's say I'm driving, for example, now, and, there's somebody, and I'm trying to avoid the person on the road, and I, God forbid, I caught an accident.
01:37It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a two, it's two people, that, the offender, and the offendee, in the sense that, I'm driving, and I, hit the person.
01:48I didn't purposely, hit the person. I had to try and swerve my, swerve, and go where I'm going to, which is normal. It's not, it's not, it's not right, but, once everybody does it, it's in Lagos.
01:58So, it's not a broken idea, it's a mockery of people.
02:02They are not trying to mock people, but, right now, in Nigeria, not everybody is okay.
02:06Some people are so rough, they drive so rough, which, you know, causes accidents, and some people passing, um, one way.
02:15So, it causes traffic at times. So, because, sometimes there might be emergency, going to the hospital, or probably you are going to work.
02:23So, you, you can't even get to where you are going, quickly. So, yes, yes, I like it, actually, yeah.
02:29I think there should be persecuted in all cases like that. Yeah. It's not that I'm being sentimental about, you know, some cases, emergency, you need to get to work, interview, you are, you are, you are about to catch a flight, something like that.
02:44For me, I don't think it's a welcome idea.
02:50I believe, uh, if, uh, if, uh, if, uh, if, uh, if Lagos State wants to have a new law over reckless driving,
02:56there will specify a particular penalty for any person or any driver caught reckless driving.
03:06There will be a particular fee or fine should be imposed on a reckless driving.
03:14So, if there caught a driver or any person, workplace driving, then we just penalize the person, according to the law, according to the penalty.
03:24So, but for a mental assessment, for me, it's not a welcome idea. It's not a good, uh, a good development.
03:31Rather, I will subject myself to any penalty, which I believe it will be a welcome idea to everybody, than a mental assessment.
03:41Mental assessment for what? It's not a welcome idea for me.
03:45To my own, um, knowledge of experience, it's okay.
03:51One, let me just, just make it shorter.
03:55Before you obtain your driving license, you have to go for medical shakeup.
04:00That will check your blood, check everything before you, you've been given driving license.
04:06And, this thing has been, for a long time, reckless drivers, or reckless drivers, it has been for a long time.
04:19That, that was, when Fashola, that was during the time of Fashola, it was the governor.
04:26It, it, it, it moved the, the motion.
04:29And, I believe, they work on it.
04:31It, you understand me, that, anybody drove recklessly.
04:37And, because of whom?
04:38It's because of most of these drivers, that, taking India, um, Ogogoro, or this, um, what do you call it?
04:46Eh?
04:46They will just, you can just, now you just go there and you see, at the most of you see, Ogogoro, Sasheti, Jija, Senu.
04:53They will just be buying it.
04:55And, people, life are very, very, very dangerous by taking that thing.
04:59So, I buy the idea, and it's okay for me.
05:04We've just heard the opinions of Legosians of this latest enforcement.
05:08While some are of the view that it is high time for this to be effective, others simply beg to differ.
05:15What's your take on this?
