00:00Truck drivers and maritime operators took to the streets of Apapa and Tinkan port in a major
00:16protest against what they described as rising extortion, racketeering, and inefficiencies in
00:24port operations.
00:35The protesters made up of members of Association of Maritime Truck Owners, Amato, and other unions
00:42say the current electronic call-off system, known as ETO, is under serious threat from
00:50cartels and corrupt officials to appeal to management of Nigerian Port Authority to please
00:58reduce the number of extortion checkpoints along the Apapa and Tinkan logistics corridor
01:05because we truckers who are losing a lot of proceeds, you know, to activities of the people
01:12that are operating most of these checkpoints in Apapa and Tinkan logistics corridor.
01:17All these checkpoints, they are also slowing down the movement of trucks from the brigades
01:22to the port.
01:23So we are calling on MPA to see how they can reduce all these checkpoints.
01:28And also, in order to improve the efficiency of the call-off system, we want the management
01:34of Nigerian Port Authority to introduce ETAG because the introduction of ETAG will eliminate
01:39call-off bracketeering, the use of multiple identities to accent the port.
01:44So, in order to enhance the efficiency of the call-off system, they should introduce ETAG.
01:50By introducing ETAG, it will make sure that all the people that are generating call-off,
01:54they go and sell at 250,000, 350,000, we will not be able to do that again.
02:00The main challenge is that, remember, the terminal, they are not operating very well, it's going
02:06to affect everybody in general because of the terminal and the port, and CTP will not
02:10replace any other truck to join that keep.
02:14And that's the most challenging time when the trucker are facing.
02:18The CTP is not the control of APX or ENA, I mean, they are on control, it's supposed to
02:24regulate the truck to move on the road.
02:29They want the Nigeria Port Authority to reduce extortion checkpoint, improve terminal efficiency,
02:58and fully implement truck scheduling systems that only allow pre-clear trucks from designated
03:05pre-gate into the port.
03:07The CTP has introduced the CTP to us, and we enjoy the system of TTP.
03:16Nothing is expected to TTP.
03:18Nothing is expected to TTP.
03:19Our people are starting to make sure we move on it.
03:24So because this TTP now, they introduce it at 10,250, so by now, they are selling it
03:32120, 130, which drivers are going against it.
03:37On this process, they see that we know where they are coming from through this TTP.
03:42If anyone is coming from one way, we will know through this TTP.
03:47If someone is on a normal process, we will know through this TTP.
03:51So now, some of our bosses now stand up to bring back the old system that is making all this
03:58road to be congested.
04:00Because if they introduce this old system, this Apapa road will be very busy.
04:06It will not be good for any other business in Apapa area.
04:11They cost it, generally.
04:13Because if they start this system, there will not be a paper that will call you up to come
04:20on the road.
04:21Everybody will just come to be on the queue.
04:23So they should please and help us on this TTP.
04:26We want this TTP to remain.
04:28The truckers are also calling for the introduction of electronic tags or e-tags to stop manipulation
04:49of call-off slots and to ensure identity verification at entry point.
04:56Their message is clear.
04:58Keep the electronic system, clean it up, and hold saboteurs accountable.
05:04Anything short of that, they warn could return Apapa to the chaos of the past.
05:11Thank you for turning up.
05:13Looking back to the back...
05:18There we go.
