00:00Right, finally tonight. After seven albums and 25 years of hits, pop group Steps could
00:07be forgiven for resting on the laurels, but five years after performing, they're still
00:12releasing music and still touring. They told our entertainment reporter, Rishi Davda,
00:16why they're not about to stop.
00:22The sound of Steps is synonymous with the 90s, their moves as iconic as their music.
00:27Drinking and dancing while you're dreaming. Now in their 25th year, the group are still
00:32releasing songs, combining new and old on a special platinum collection.
00:36We have done the greatest hits before, but it was really important that we included our new
00:42original music together with all the original classics, I guess. And it's a real big celebration
00:49for us. I don't think anybody would have imagined us to be together in 25 years.
00:52Yeah, we were put together through an audition from the stage newspaper.
01:08They lined us up, didn't they? And they were like, you, you, you. No, you go, you, you, you. It's like, all right.
01:14I mean, it was before the days of kind of Pop Idol and X Factor and stuff, so I don't think it was
01:19quite as brutal. We all make the mistake of thinking H was cool though, didn't we?
01:23I thought H was really cool.
01:28So fashion's definitely changed since Steps burst onto the scene in 1997, but so has the industry as a whole.
01:34We're experiencing it now, aren't we? It's all like, say, the phones, the lights, the TikToks,
01:38and Instagrams, all this social media thing. You can't really get away from it.
01:42I've heard back in the day, if I'm honest, because I quite like the mystique of, you know,
01:46if you follow somebody or you're interested in being an actor or singer or whoever,
01:49you want to know about them, but you don't really know about them.
01:52You're 25 years into Steps now. Let's go another 10 years.
01:58Let's not.
02:00I think the exciting thing is because we've got this amazing fan base and we've got this great
02:05catalog, as long as we're enjoying it, I think it's great to keep doing it.
02:14Living up to the title of their latest single, Steps, has certainly proven to be hard to forget.
02:19Rishi Dabda, ITV News. It was difficult not to dance you out, wasn't it?
02:24All right, that's it from us for now. Julie will be here at a slightly later time,
02:29at 10 past 10, but from me and the rest of the Evening News team, do enjoy your evening. Bye-bye.

03:42I don't think anybody would have imagined us to be together in 25.
03:45We didn't really get better.
03:50Eagle Eye viewers would have spotted a missing member, and despite H's absence today,
03:54the singers couldn't help but reminisce about how things started.
03:57Yeah, we were put together through an audition from the stage newspaper.
04:01They lined us up, didn't they? And they were like, you, you, you. No, you go, you, you, you.

08:08It was difficult not to dance through that, wasn't it?
08:11All right, that's it from us for now. Julie will be here at a slightly later time at 10 past 10,
08:16but from me and the rest of the Evening News team, do enjoy your evening. Bye-bye.
08:26Thank you so much. And still to come, between now and 10 o'clock this morning, former Tommy Starr,
08:44Archie's right here and he's going to be performing a classic just for us. But right now,
08:49Stets are back with a new album celebrating 25 years. Yeah, 25 years of hits.
09:04Everybody clap your hands, give it up and dance. We're gonna stop all night now.
09:11It's the way you're making me feel.
09:19It's the way you're making me feel.
09:21It's the way you're making me feel.
09:26Why did you leave me just to live in my head?
09:28It's so easy to love, it's so hard to forget.
09:32It's the way you're making me feel.
09:34Well that's the new single, Hard to Forget.
09:37Claire, Lee, Bea and Lisa are with me and H joined us from his home in South Wales.
09:42Hi, H! You've been doing the school run, love, haven't you?
09:46I have, yes. Obviously that is my main job, but I apologise I'm not in the studio.
09:52I'm sending you lots of love.
09:53Oh, it's fine. I know being a daddy, I can't believe you're twins are six years old.
09:58That is scary.
09:59I know, going on 16, that is very scary.
10:02It is really, aww.
10:03I know, it's great to see you and it just gets better and better, doesn't it?
10:08It really does, it's fantastic.
10:10This is the Platinum Collection, isn't it?
10:14This is the Platinum Collection that's out now or is it out soon?
10:1819th of August.
10:1919th of August is fantastic.
10:21And is this all the ones we love?
10:23It's 25 years, so it's everything from the first half and all the new stuff from the new three albums.
10:31It's brilliant. Again, you talked to Mabel earlier on, and she's got vinyl.
10:36I'm steps.
10:36Yeah, I'm steps.
10:38Oh, you're steps.
10:40She's got the vinyl. You guys have got the vinyl. This is great.
10:43Now look, Lee, are we going to see you touring in the summer? What's happening?
10:47We are doing a festival tour at the moment.
10:49Yeah, we're headlining lots of festivals out there.
10:50Right, fantastic.
10:51All the way through from now till September.
10:54Oh, yeah.
10:54I want September 26th is our last one, I think, isn't it?
10:57Yeah.
10:57But it's great.
10:58And this is the good thing, because it's all the classics that we love, but it's also not just that.
11:03It's not just about nostalgia, because it's all the new stuff as well.
11:06Yeah, it's incredible.
11:07We've had such...
11:08In fact, it's been a wonderful couple of years.
11:11Even though it's been hard, we've been able to release two new albums.
11:14Yeah.
11:14So we're literally going out, doing all our major hits, and then adding the new ones as well.
11:19But people are getting to know those and still dancing on to those.
11:22So it's been...
11:22You know what?
11:23Lisa, you've got this...
11:25I mean, obviously, you've got the die-hards.
11:27I believe you must say.
11:28You've got the die-hards stage fans.
11:30There they are.
11:31And a whole new generation are coming along, aren't they?
11:34A whole new generation.
11:35I think so.
11:36Quite so.
11:36And I think because, you know, like, we've all had children, which is wonderful.
11:40And a lot of our fans have had children as well.
11:41So they're coming to the shows.
11:43We're meeting the new generation of steps.
11:45And, yeah, I think, you know, it's definitely an achievement for us still to be here and present.
11:50And I'm currently five years old, so we can do it.
11:53I think you've got it.
11:54I do.
11:55And like you said, you know, there's a lot of baby steps.
11:57Okay.
11:58But when you think about it, there are.
11:59I mean, how many all together?
12:00Eight, I think.
12:01When you start...
12:02When you kind of...
12:02Where does that last?
12:03Yeah.
12:04I think so.
12:04Too long.
12:05I think so.
12:06Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:07That's it.
12:08So obviously...
12:09So the baby steps, like, all get together in these steps.
12:11That's it.
12:12Oh, yeah.
12:13No, it was cute.
12:14We actually had...
12:15There was Daisy and Darlene and my Benjamin were at Sunderland when we did Cubics Festival
12:21just recently.
12:22Right.
12:22And just to see them together, just like how they're growing.
12:24It's just, yeah, it's wonderful.
12:26Yeah, it's wonderful.
12:27I know.
12:27My Benjamin's going to die.
12:28I know.
12:29I know.
12:30But as well as doing steps, you all do your own thing as well, which is fantastic.
12:34I know Dubai is home for you, isn't it, really?
12:37It is.
12:37It is, but right now my son's playing Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot.
12:40I was going to say a crowd, Mum!
12:42Yeah, we're here for the summer, which is, I'm so proud.
12:45We had a press night last night and he smashed it and the cast are doing a fantastic job and
12:49they're at Leicester Curve Theatre, so please go and check them out.
12:52Oh, it's brilliant.
12:52See, back in the day, when you were babies and I said to you, it would always be,
12:56Leicester Curve Theatre, the date, the release of the album.
13:00Yeah.
13:00She got everything.
13:01She got just as hello.
13:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:03But that's fantastic that you're a lot of what?
13:05Inevitable.
13:06I mean, they are performers, aren't they?
13:07They are.
13:08Why not?
13:08We're still on a high.
13:10I've travelled up from London, to London last night, so yeah, great to be here and
13:15congratulations to everybody.
13:16Oh, it's wonderful.
13:17It really is.
13:17And you've got your school out there as well.
13:19I do.
13:19Yeah, I served on it.
13:20You're kind of like encouraging all these young people to just do what they want to do.
13:24I think it's important to give something back.
13:26You know, we're very lucky.
13:27We've had great careers.
13:28We're still enjoying.
13:29And it's lovely to be able to pass on our knowledge and our expertise and experience
13:34onto the future stars.
13:36Now, isn't it funny having each in a box?
13:38Because it's very quiet.
13:39It's just very relaxing.
13:40It's nice to be trolling, guys.
13:42Enjoy this.
13:42Just enjoy this, right?
13:44This will never happen.
13:45I don't know who he's talking, mate.
13:46Put it that way.
13:48It's like, what's the noise?
13:49I've got lots to say.
13:50Ask me a question.
13:51I've got lots.
13:52You have always.
13:53Now, tell me about Pride, because you are celebrating Pride in Wales, aren't you?
13:59Yeah, and we have lots to celebrate.
14:02You know, the world is a very different place to where I was growing up as a child.
14:07I live in a near a beautiful village in Cowbridge near Cardiff, and we are doing the very first
14:14Pride.
14:15Yay!
14:15And I'm so excited.
14:16We are doing a gay mayor's coffee morning.
14:19We are putting bunting up and down the streets.
14:22They're having a Pride fashion show.
14:24We're having a massive gala.
14:26And all of the money raised goes back into local schools, education, resources.
14:31So, I'm so, so pleased.
14:32I'm really excited.
14:33It's fantastic.
14:34Like I said, you're all doing, you know, and thank you.
14:37I know you're off to Canada soon, aren't you?
14:38Ah, yeah.
14:39So, I was very fortunate to be asked to reprise my role as Lena the one in Singing in the Rain.
14:44The best part ever.
14:46The world!
14:46Yeah, the things kind of love.
14:48You are amazing.
14:50They're touring at the moment, actually.
14:51They're on a new pay tour, so hello to all the guys.
14:53But I'll be joining them to go to Toronto in October, and I'm really, really excited.
14:58That is the best film ever.
14:59See, when I went well last week, I put it on, again.
15:02I mean, I know that every single word to sign in the rain, and I love hearing other women.
15:06If you haven't seen Faye do it, you have to, because she smashed it.
15:10She knocked it at the park.
15:12It was brilliant.
15:12I know.
15:12Will I have to go and tell him to Canada?
15:14Yes, he has to be.
15:15How to Canada?
15:17You and me are you on a year only?
15:19He's a year on Saturday.
15:21Awww.
15:22A year on Saturday.
15:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:23So, it's gone very, very quick.
15:25That has gone so fast.
15:26I can't believe these guys all know, obviously, what it's like.
15:28It's gone so, so quick.
15:30And he is now, if he was here, he would crawl up to there, he'd pull himself up, he'd stand up,
15:34and he'd go like that to you and just give it away.
15:36Aww.
15:37So cute.
15:37Isn't it the best thing ever?
15:39It is.
15:39I love being a dad, I've got to be honest.
15:40I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm absolutely loving it.
15:44And he is...
15:44You're probably hands on as well.
15:45I am quite hands on.
15:46The wife is amazing as well.
15:47I can't take it away from her, but we're also lucky he's a good kid as well.
15:50Yeah, well, they get that from their parents.
15:52Oh, I hope so.
15:53They absolutely do.
15:55Are you still doing all your keep fit stuff as well?
15:57Because you look fantastic.
15:58Uh, well, I just kind of, yeah, I kind of look after myself as much as I can, really.
16:02I think you have to, to be with these guys on stage and...
16:04To keep up, I should say.
16:05To keep up, to keep up with him as well, yeah.
16:07Aww, I know.
16:08But I need to run out after that one.
16:10But, yeah.
16:12Do you think, Claire, it's better this time?
16:14I mean, because it's like, you know, I always thought you were the hardest working band.
16:19You worked so hard to get to where you are.
16:22Because you have to, you have to be with that.
16:23I think we did as well, because I...
16:25We still do.
16:27Yeah, exactly.
16:29In the beginning, I think, because of Five, Six, Seven, Eight,
16:31we were seen as a little bit of a novelty act.
16:33And so I feel like we did, we just did everything, didn't we,
16:37to keep ourselves up there and doing what we loved.
16:40But I think it is better now.
16:42I think we're, we're much more confident and we, we know what we're doing.
16:46I know what we're doing.
16:48We're winning awards, Lorraine.
16:50Awards for the marathon.
16:51Yeah.
16:52So you shouldn't be, so you shouldn't.
16:55The thing about you guys is there's such massive affection for you.
16:59You know, from, from people like ourselves that have grown up with you,
17:01interviewed you, you know, all of that.
17:03And then people are rediscovering you.
17:05And it's, it's kind of the joy of the music.
17:08You know, it's like, how can you not dance to you guys?
17:11Oh, and it's been so great being on tour and doing the live festivals and seeing it.
17:41So it's just so great to have side of the live festivals and seeing it right now.
17:45And it will be the time to like all you guys,
17:46like the things that you really need to do in your career.
17:49And it will also be the time to like,
17:50the two things that we need to do in our career.
17:51You know, when you're not going to go to the park and go to the park,
17:53you know, the park and you're not going to do there for us.
17:55And you know, it's like a lot of people of the world are going to be amazing.
17:58So that's the time.
18:00If you're not going to go, I'd love to take a lot of fun.
18:02We're on the day.
18:03Yeah.
18:04And you're on the day that's been a very busy day,
18:05on the day, I'm going to have to go,
18:07and if you're going to have to be a big.
