00:00One moment and to revise and extend my remarks.
00:03Without objection, the gentlelady is recognized for one minute.
00:07Mr. Speaker, I rise today to express my deep concern for the future of education in our
00:13country. The White House's last-minute decision to free $7 billion in congressionally approved
00:19Department of Education funds threatens essential programs the families of my district rely on.
00:25In Maryland alone, more than 150,000 children participate in after-school programs and nearly
00:32120,000 rely on summer programs. And for every one student enrolled, three more are on the wait list.
00:40These programs give parents assurances that even outside of school hours, children are learning,
00:45receiving healthy meals, and building meaningful relationships. But don't just take my word.
00:51Let the kids in my district speak. This next to me was sent by those from Girls Inc. in Washington
00:57County, an amazing program that my family has long supported. Parents should not be left scrambling to
01:03choose between looking after their kids and working to put food on the table. In rural districts like
01:08mine, publicly funded programs and programs like Girls Inc. are invaluable. I stand firmly with Maryland
01:14Attorney General in fighting for those funds the families are counting on. And I thank my Senate
01:19colleagues on both sides of the aisle for speaking up, and I urge my colleagues in the House to do the same.
01:24Thank you, and I yield my time. Thank you.
