00:00training camps are underway and we've got six teams to report to training camp yesterday and
00:05so much talk around the offseason has been about the marriage between their first year head coach
00:09ben johnson and their second year quarterback caleb williams i want you to listen to both
00:14of them talking yesterday about how they are approaching this camp and this season and how
00:18different it sounds obviously i have self goals um and that's you know being the first 4 000 yard
00:25passer i'm embarrassed history that's a you know goal of mine 70 completion that helps the team
00:30uh keeps on the field puts us in better positions um and then other than that just trying to go down
00:35and you know score the most points that we can with these drives that we have so um you know that's
00:39that's kind of my self goal and obviously other you know other than that um you got to go win
00:43there were some footwork things that we wanted to clean up uh trusting the time in your feet
00:47being able to anticipate throws um there's a it's it's a lot of stuff that goes into that position
00:54and rather than throwing the whole gauntlet at them we're just building it from the ground up
00:59so those two things didn't sound similar to one another in fact as soon as caleb started talking
01:05nick i saw you react out of the corner of my eye what was that reaction i mean it just was um it's
01:11obvious to me that he's giving or he's giving the media and the fans something to grab onto which like
01:18he understands how it works he knows we want to hear but it's good it backfires like that always
01:22backfires it seems to me that what he needs to be focused on and he probably is focused on these
01:27things but he's telling us another thing but it just is a it's a scary thing to hear when your
01:31quarterback is coming out there telling everybody his um his statistical goals yeah i'm not going to
01:35assume that he's focused on those things though just because you know ben johnson said i mean i want
01:40to hear caleb williams say the fact that hey you know what i'm not going to talk about being the first
01:444k passer i'm not going to talk about 4 000 yards i'm not going to talk about 25 30 passes
01:48whatever over unders you want to put on tv i'm not going to talk about none of that what i am going
01:52to talk about is the fact that guess what ben johnson and my quarterback coach sat me down and
01:57said this is how we're going to watch film this is how we're going to start practice this is what i
02:01want you to concentrate on on three five and seven step drop this is how the routes are going to
02:05distribute this is how it's going to convert against cover two against cover three these are the
02:09things that are going to help you go bing bang boom to the next thing you know you got a 300 yard game
02:14a 400 yard game a 275 yard game no sacks no unnecessary sacks throw the ball away talk about
02:22the process because at the end of the year bears fans i mean you you know you can speak to them
02:27better speak for them better than anybody will sit there and go hey man we don't need to hear about
02:31any of these proclamations early on now just tell us how about how you're going to not take sacks
02:35know how the offense is going to be run and how you're going to win football games that's it
02:39it sounds like young caleb is watching the a block of get up along with jerry jones because
02:46the 4 000 yards the set like it's just so specific and i feel like that's been the conversation
02:51surrounding him and what are the expectations now that he's paired with ben johnson i you saw how ben
02:58johnson as soon as he started talking it was kind of boring you're like you're like okay because he's
03:01talking about the really rudimentary like basic stuff ben johnson is obsessive about the details
03:07and that's where caleb has to be i think if caleb i don't want to hear about the goals i kind of
03:13just want caleb to to be competent in an offense to by season end master that offense look comfortable
03:21know what a defense is trying to do to him know where to go with the football like those are the
03:25things even as pro day i remember scouts and gm said i just want to see him do the basic stuff
03:30we know he can do all the flashy stuff i want to see him do the basic stuff and so far in his nfl career
03:35caleb that's his that needs to be his focus the basics that's right look to be fair to him he was
03:41probably asked and so i answered a question that's fine no one is sitting here saying oh this is a
03:45terrible thing for him to say but what i do know and this is sort of an old thing that golfers talk
03:50about all the time you don't stand on the first tee thinking to yourself i want to shoot 68 today
03:54you stand on the first tee thinking i need to hit a good shot right here and then the next one and then
03:58the next one and on it goes and it sounds from what the coach is saying like they're tearing him down
04:03to the studs right if they're working on the footwork they're tearing it down to the very beginning
04:07i think also though in caleb's defense is the things that you tell the media not all the things
04:12that are in your head right and i think that lots of players do write down personal goals
04:16and think about personal goals i think what we have quibbled with with is that he's sharing that
04:21not as much or what we want him to be sharing is the quarterback speak that we've grown accustomed
04:26to when someone asks you what are your personal goals whether you have them or not
04:30you're supposed to say uh i'm not worried about that i just want to do the best i can for my team
04:35and make sure we win and so like we understand that you can have those goals and still be going
04:41and focusing on those little things but this is part of the game we're in a new era where it feels
04:45like players are being a little bit more open and honest and we don't always like what we hear
04:49you just hope behind the scenes though he's carrying out what ben's talking about that he really is
04:55obsessive about those things because sometimes look don we've all we played with guys who you
05:01know have these grandiose expectations of themselves then you're sitting there and you're
05:05going but damn aren't you the last one in the weight room weren't you the last one to walk into
05:09the meeting room and you're talking about all these things you want to do and you can't figure
05:12out why you aren't getting them like that that's what you just hope that he's paying attention to
05:16and when it comes to footwork just because we had a whole long conversation about it this morning
05:20you were making the point what when you got to san francisco early in your career what was
05:24hunger and focus i mean it was about footwork it was about speed away from center like like look
05:30this is what the pacing look like steve young joe montana they're being pretty good dudes like they
05:36want to play in some pretty good football in their career and who are the wide receivers jerry rice and
05:40john taylor i mean that's what everything was about was the timing so i mean look ben is on the right
05:46track it's not i'm not sitting here questioning him i just hope caleb is as well yeah yeah it's not
05:50going to be about those numbers at the end of the day he's doing the basics he talked about a variety
05:54of different things those are the things to your point that are going to want people to latch on
05:58to they've never had a 4 000 yard passer well that's one of his goals yeah let's go through
06:02the baseball yesterday run the bases last
